DD will be going to Bristol this year. Any tips/advice would be greatly appreciated. She is the first of my children to go to uni so absolutely any info would be great!

My dd's firmed Bristol for Theatre and English, and is now looking at accommodation. We managed to go and drive round last year on the way back from holiday, she wants Stoke Bishop self-catered. Hiatt Baker or Badock seem to be top of her list, does anyone know if either of these has a good Drama society? Or any other halls that have a particular reputation for it?

I would have thought she'd be better off in Clifton as bound to be late nights on her course but she's adamant she wants Stoke Bishop!

Do you actually have to choose 9 options? If so she will have to either choose some catered or some out of SB which she isn't so keen on.

Dd firmed Bristol (eng) offer earlier this evening having just had her Durham rejection confirmed.

It is better to put 9 or you risk being allocated somewhere you haven't put down. DS's gf listed 9 but didn't get any of hers but does like where she ended up. DS is also going for Badock and Hyatt Baker like most who want SB do so I guess will used up as many choices they offer and then a couple more.

I can't remember whether my twins who were in Bristol had to put 9 choices. They wanted Stoke Bishop catered.
They went to Wills and Churchill and both got first choice of halls which surprised me as their sister picked Willis 13 years before and did not get it but they said she had a reserve place and turn up on the day as people drop out (they had) it would be fine and it was, They finished last summer and one is still there doing law post grad although not of course in university accommodation and not at the university this year.

My twin sons and their older sister really enjoyed Bristol by the way. Good luck to those hopefully going there later this year. All 3 of them had Durham offers too and chose Bristol over Durham for various reasons - we live in London although I am from near Durham and my father and uncle went there (in their day it was medicine they were studying) so was certainly not anti Durham at all but Bristol worked out fine and easier to get home if they have something they need to do (my Bristol son had to come back to London for a doctor's appointment last week for example).

DS is definitely going as he deferred last June.

CountessDracula · 15/03/2021 16:52

Good to hear they enjoyed it @Xenia. DD is very set on it, it's her sort of place and their Theatre and English course is very sought after apparently so I'm just relieved she got an offer!

She's quite fussy about food in a healthy eating way and likes cooking so the catered halls won't be any good for her really, we've tried school food and it was just a waste of money as she preferred making her own lunches so I fear if she went to catered she would just end up cooking anyway but with poor facilities.

It seems Badock has a studio theatre and active drama there

I can't find anything similar for Hiatt Baker though. Badock looked pretty grim I thought, does anyone know anything about it for self catered?

CountessDracula · 09/09/2021 15:15

How are all the Bristol soon to be freshers doing?

DD amazingly got her first choice accommodation (Hiatt Baker, Self catered with basin in the room) which was very unexpected given some of the horror stories around! Hope all yours got what they wanted.

We have done the ikea and tkmaxx trips and she's all ready to go. Currently in Munich having a city break with a friend, we always said after Munich it gets real...and she gets back tonight!

@CountessDracula good luck with your dd at Bristol. Dd 3 is studying at Bristol and loves it.

Joining in, DS is going to Bristol, he’ll be in Stoke Bishop too.

Xenia · 10/09/2021 08:46

Good luck to the Shauna son and the others going to Bristol very shortly. This is my first year for 4 years of not having a child in Bristol (my son left in mid July this year and had a lovely time there) (although I still have 2 students - twins post grad law students, but living at home as course is in London so fairly full house again)

SeasonFinale · 10/09/2021 09:21

DS got Badock basic room with basin and catered. Hatter Baker was his preference and self catered but happybhengot one of his choices especially in light of oversubscription etc.

He has signed up to get down there ASAP ie 15/9 so next Wednesday!

Hatter Baker Grin bloody phone

CountessDracula · 10/09/2021 11:24

@bevelino thanks, she is so excited to be going!
@SeasonFinale Badock was on her list too, just wanted to be in Stoke Bishop really and self catered. Flat of 24 which will be useful when they all get locked in due to covid I guess Sad

She's going on Saturday 18th, I'm sure come Weds she will wish she had chosen an earlier slot!
