Can they go back if they have not already done so?

Nearly all DC's flatmates are back already.

Vocational one yes go back most the others seemingly not... but I reckon reality is they aren't going to move ones who are already in situ. DD's boyfd is a philosophy student who lives in halls in same city where his mum lives; he could live with mum but doesn't. They won't kick him out, I reckon.

DDs uni (Edinburgh) said that they are considering the new restrictions and will advise student's shortly - it's a public holiday today in Scotland. They had already advised staggered return by subject starting from mid January to mid February at the end of last term. Waiting to see if this will be delayed further or return dates will be made mandatory rather than advisory. DD is back as she works part-time but is alone in the flat and there is only one other person in entire halls.

Northernsoullover · 04/01/2021 20:49

Our uni said if you haven't come back to your accommodation, stay home. If you have come back stay here.

bellagogosdead · 04/01/2021 20:50

dd and her flatmates all went back for new year. I expect she will stay because she wants to and it's the right thing to do I suppose. Sad

NeverTrustaRabbit · 04/01/2021 20:51

The BBC news site says that they shouldn't return. Will wait to see what DD's Uni say

So where does this leave UNI students?
ClerkMaxwell · 04/01/2021 20:53

Agree don't think they will throw out those already there.

VanCleefArpels · 04/01/2021 20:56

For those in private rented accommodation a university doesn’t have any say over where they live. The guidance allows travel for accessing education or for moving home. Either is sufficient for me to be comfortable with DD moving back to Uni city. They will create a new household and lockdown together while accessing online learning as they have been ever since September. They have not set foot in anyone else’s home all that time, isolated for a fortnight before coming home for Xmas and have not been out while at home. They all travel in their own cars. They are no risk to anyone.

HappyThursdays · 04/01/2021 20:59

Both mine are back (one in private accommodation and one in halls)

They would rather be locked down there than home and they both had coronavirus already so i think they made the right choice for them (also low risk to others)

Bathroom12345 · 04/01/2021 21:00

DS has gone back already. University doesn’t want to refuse access because that will trigger requests for refunds

quirkyquails · 04/01/2021 21:01

If schools close from Tuesday does that mean open tomorrow and then close or close from now? I don't think he made it obvious.

LIZS · 04/01/2021 21:03

Dd is hoping to be allowed to travel back to uni , if Scottish rules allow. International students are due back imminently.

baldisbeautiful · 04/01/2021 21:08

Glad I found this thread. DD planning on returning to private rental at the weekend. Own car and will be isolating with housemates as they all in same course. Been isolated at home all over xmas so should be fine I hope. Looking at it as moving house as that is allowed!

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 04/01/2021 21:09

My DD desperately wants to go back. Most of her flat has gone already. I can’t stop her (don’t know if I want to anyway as they got on so well during last term)
She’d have to get train though which is a worry

baldisbeautiful · 04/01/2021 21:10

Guidance says not to return to campus but if in private rental then they won't be on campus anyway, so I'm hoping it will be fine for DD to go back

HeartZone · 04/01/2021 21:12

So we’re thinking private rentals good to return.
I wonder about the halls .... wondering about payment which is due around now .... what’s everyone doing? Thanks.

Nothingoriginalhere · 04/01/2021 21:20

Newcastle have announced that they are refunding 2 months rent for those in uni halls - sadly dd is in private halls due to late entry because of the exams cock up 😡

RudolphtheRemaindeer · 04/01/2021 21:23

DS can't decide what to do. 3rd in private rent, some housemates already back but he can live here pretty cheaply excluding the rent he has to pay back in his uni city, so might stay here for the next few weeks anyway.

thesunwillout · 04/01/2021 21:28

DD in halls but not on a campus type set up.
Just throwing that in to the mix.

If uni kick them out they kick them out, but there are three girls she knows of who are international students and have been there over the Xmas break, they'd have nowhere to go.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 04/01/2021 21:31

My DD is going back this weekend as planned. She’s 2nd year in private house, they can’t stop students doing that.

titchy · 04/01/2021 21:31

I agree.

Bathroom12345 · 04/01/2021 21:34

Trains are fine. My DS had a carriage to himself on two separate trains.

He isn’t due to come back until Easter and we were planning to visit early Feb but that is now scrapped but he is fine wanted to go back.

Unescorted · 04/01/2021 21:36

Teaching will be online unless tehy are studying for a future critical care worker & they will have to abide by lockdown rules from midnight tonight.

from gov.uk

justasking111 · 04/01/2021 21:42

@Unescorted thank you DS wanted us to jump in the car tonight with him, but it seems he cannot return for now.

makingmyway10 · 04/01/2021 21:46

Dd is a vet student, she went back at the weekend as she had an exam today. She has had an email from the Uni to say all Vet and Medical students should return and will continue to have practicals and tutorials but all other students should stay at home and not return to halls or Uni. Her halls are very quiet!
