So that means CAGS then?

Blimey. I wonder if this will change the amount of offers unis make from now on? Or if they will just make unconditional offers now on the info they have?

I know for Durham, they usually make about 500 offers for DS’ course, for an acceptance rate of about 100. They won’t be doing that this year now.

But all the non-contextual offers have been made already..,

LSE over-offer a lot as well because if the massive international intake. It’s anyone’s guess now...

quest1on · 04/01/2021 20:51

Sorry I meant to say all the contextual offers at Durham seem to have been made for DS’ course

I interpreted it as slimmed down exams maybe rather than CAGS but who knows.. yep clear as mud..

chopc · 04/01/2021 21:31

FUCK!!!!!!!!!! So angry and upset right now

DahliaMacNamara · 04/01/2021 21:48

Yeah, I don't think they are fully cancelled...for now. But how are they meant to work towards, oh, you know what I'm thinking, you're all thinking the same. Shitshow Mark II upcoming.

Bowbridge · 04/01/2021 22:16

According to the BBC news the exams are cancelled. I am sure BJ did not say that. Such poor reporting.

LaundryFairy · 04/01/2021 22:21

In happier news, DS got an offer from Durham this afternoon. Nice bit of confidence boosting during the long wait to hear from Oxford.

Oh that is good news! Remind me - have you said what subject your DC is applying for? I keep losing track ...
Revengeofthepangolins · 04/01/2021 22:33

Oh, history, I think?

LaundryFairy · 04/01/2021 22:35

Yes, History. It was the usual offer of A* A A

Beetlesand · 04/01/2021 22:37

Oh that is a little bit of good news @LaundryFairy! Chuffed for your ds Smile

LaundryFairy · 04/01/2021 22:41

Thanks @Beetlesand . It has cheered him up!

quest1on · 04/01/2021 22:47

Wow congrats Laundry!

chopc · 04/01/2021 22:51

Congrats on new offers!

I think BJ said summer exams are cancelled but they have yet to decide how students will be assessed. However I think all our DC's knew that every assessment should be treated like the last - of course easier said than achieved!

MatureStudent21 · 04/01/2021 23:07

Congratulations @LaundryFairy!

The musings of the teachers at my college were that there may be some hybrid of CAGs + some reduced exams or some form of controlled assessments - but I would assume that all this dithering by the government means that there would be very little time to put this into place now.....

Revengeofthepangolins · 04/01/2021 23:10

He didn't say they would be cancelled. He said " We recognise that this will mean it is not possible or fair for all exams to go ahead this summer as normal. The Education Secretary will work with Ofqual to put in place alternative arrangements."

So not ALL exams will go ahead AS NORMAL. (my caps) That leaves loads of possibilities other than straight cancellation, despite how it is being reported.

BigWoollyJumpers · 04/01/2021 23:20

Oh, I understood that caveat to cover the fact that BTEC's are still going ahead?

Poor DD, lots of tears here. She so wanted to do the exams. Also the loss of driving lessons, work, new boyfriend ....I cried a bit too. I feel so sorry for my two DD's.

chopc · 04/01/2021 23:20

I don't understand the difference between exams not going ahead as normal and then being cancelled. In any case they were not going to be normal with reduced content and some content being known in advance.

chopc · 04/01/2021 23:21

Of course there will be a series of assessments and luckily our cohort knows this in advance but their AL will me meaningless compared to the 2019 cohort for example

chopc · 04/01/2021 23:21

Sorry meaningless is a bit harsh

Jano69 · 04/01/2021 23:33

Congrats @LaundryFairy on the Durham offer.

DD is quite chilled and almost relieved A Levels are cancelled. She may not feel quite so sanguine in the weeks and months to come.

Who knows how this will pan out now?

Ellmau · 04/01/2021 23:55

Just in time for Oxbridge to cut down the number of offers they make... Potentially anyway.

DahliaMacNamara · 05/01/2021 00:16

I imagine they were planning to be pretty conservative already.

CoolKittens · 05/01/2021 08:14

BBC News this morning says 'A-Levels and GCSEs will be cancelled, a government source confirmed to BBC News'. I wonder what evidence or assessments will be required? Poor kids.
