DC was rejected from Cam last year and has applied to Ox this year. (advised by school). DC is dreading double rejection. Apparently 33% of 4 x A* holders don't get offers.
He has a Bristol offer, and the got a Durham offer last year, so is hoping he will get an offer there again, having his grades 'in the bag'.
Is anyone else in this position?

WarmAndco3y · 01/01/2021 13:36

Happy new year all Smile

@quest1on, your DS is really going through it, on top of everything else. Hopefully he’ll look back at this time in the future and smile, having achieved a lot of his desires and being in a much better place.
@derekthe1adyhamster that’s really sweet.
My DS I’m afraid to say is very invested in C. I feel I don’t want to be negative and not acknowledge his ‘keenness’. But also can’t help thinking about the possibility of a redirection. It also doesn’t help that Durham & St. A have been mute, so no alternative discussions from him to alter the narrative.
We are all glad he has mocks to distract him, he was meant to be starting next week, but we got an email to say it’s been pushed back by a week. This means that the Oxford candidates will be getting their offers ( or not) at the start of mocks, instead of the tail end. Also their mocks have been ‘squashed’ into 1 week, instead of spread out over 2 weeks.

WarmAndco3y · 01/01/2021 13:38

DS has also told us he won’t open his emails in school on the 25th, so it will be a long wait for us all Hmm

cantkeepawayforever · 01/01/2021 13:48

I have found that those girls (I work with girls) who were ambivalent about Oxbridge were more enthusiastic about going after visiting for their interviews.

One of the huge advantages - psychologically - of this year's online process has been a certain detachment, compared with going to 'live the life' for a couple of days then more than likely have that possibility taken away.

DD was lucky enough to visit the university in person, but not having the interview complicated by staying in college, meeting potential friends and tutors etc has, I think, lessened her emotional involvement with the process.

IrmaFayLear · 01/01/2021 13:51

Hear hear @cantkeepawayforever .

WarmAndco3y · 01/01/2021 15:14

DS just received a happy new year greeting from Durham. Let’s just say he wasn’t amused Shock

Vargas · 01/01/2021 15:51

Weirdly I received a happy new year from Durham too, I must have got myself on an email list somehow. Still hoping for an offer from them for ds....

pepperaunt · 01/01/2021 16:28

DD is trying to pretend she’s excited about going to Bath (no other offers yet) but really she’s still upset by how poorly one of her C interviews went. Also got New Years greetings from Durham. Thanks for that.

Revengeofthepangolins · 01/01/2021 17:10

@1805. There is at least one other reapplicant n the board - MidLifeCrisis007. I imagine there must be some others but can’t thin of the names off hand. It must be a really hard decision, whether to go again.

Lots do - popular wisdom has it that at both my boys’ schools between a quarter and a third of the Oxbridge successes are actually year 14 students although it is hard to track down hard numbers - but it is a big commitment.

quest1on · 01/01/2021 17:46

Ha - yes DS had the “Happy New Year - it’s not to late to apply to Durham!”

They’ve only had his application since the end of September.

MidLifeCrisis007 · 01/01/2021 18:07

Yes.... DS1 is a re-applicant @1805. I was not keen at all on him reapplying. In fact I strongly advised against it but boys will be boys!

So here we are 12 months on with no offers at all and he could have been about to start his second term at Durham! To his credit though he's got a full time job as a teaching assistant at his old prep school and he's LOVING it and the Reception boys adore him.

I also got the Happy New Year email from Durham today and a reminder that it's not too late to apply. Perhaps they forgot that I did apply....... back in 1984 and graduated from there in 1988!

quest1on · 01/01/2021 22:05

Fingers crossed for him MidLife. Sounds like he’s gaining great work experience in the meantime though.

1805 · 02/01/2021 17:02

MidLifeCrisis007
Yes, I wasn't too keen either. He had a place at Durham too. he is also working at a local prep school as a Gappy. Not his old school though! He is planning on inter-railing round Europe - if possible - at Easter. I really hope Durham give him a place again. He has Bristol and Warwick in the bag but REALLY wants to go to Oxford. I kind of think that if he didn't get in last year, then he probably won't this year either.

Good luck to you.

Pumpkintopf · 03/01/2021 22:20

@quest1on your poor boy! I hope he's feeling better?

MatureStudent21 · 03/01/2021 22:31

I also got the Durham Happy Holidays email. I’ve just made my way back to the thread - Happy New Year everyone! I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas; I’m guessing we’re getting to an anxious point again?

whiteroseredrose · 04/01/2021 00:13

Happy New Year to everyone. Let's hope it's better than last year.

It looks like Durham offers are coming out, DD got hers just before Christmas as did one of her friends.

Not much longer to wait!

beethecrackon24995 · 04/01/2021 00:20

happy new year everyone. i had forgotten about cambridge/durham until earlier this evening when i was in dd's bedroom. she hadn't forgotten of course. she tells me that durham will be sending out offers on (i think..) 12th jan. cambridge not until 25th. she has 3 offers although doesn't want to go to any of them and has set her heart on either of the above but is very much aware that there is certainly no guarantee of her getting an offer for either by a long shot. she is the only one out of her friends trying out for C but a fair few for D. exciting times......an exciting distratction (whilst there is hope anyway) during lockdown time

Beetlesand · 04/01/2021 00:31

Happy New year to you all Smile
Congratulations to your Dd @whiteroseredrose and good luck to others waiting on offers.

FlyingSquid · 04/01/2021 00:32

DD still has spaces on her UCAS form! I think she was still secretly hoping she might yet get a chance to visit somewhere- anywhere! - before making the decision.

MatureStudent21 · 04/01/2021 09:24

@FlyingSquid does DD have a shortlist in mind for her remaining spaces? I suspect it may be a case of apply first and hopefully visit later.

derekthe1adyhamster · 04/01/2021 10:43

DS had spaces, he chucked in Exeter & Southampton. Lots from his school go to Exeter and his brother is at the Cornwall campus. I am hoping he'll go for Southampton as it isn't too far from us. Traveling 7 hours in a car is not very convenient, especially on the day before the last lock down, and the train is long and expensive to Cornwall!

FlyingSquid · 04/01/2021 11:03

DD seems to be casting her net widely and is contemplating Exeter, Edinburgh, Sheffield and Stirling -- all very beautiful regions, but need narrowing down!

bendmeoverbackwards · 04/01/2021 11:03

Happy new Year everyone!

Just over a week now until Oxford results day, I'm nervous for dd. Does anyone know if Durham offers might be imminent (History)?

Still no news on A Levels. I don't see how they can still go ahead as planned. Dd is due to go back next week on the 11th but that could all change of course. They have timetabled lessons from tomorrow onwards (INSET day today) but only half as many live streamed lessons as they would have normally. What are other schools doing?

RunnersTipple · 04/01/2021 11:25

@bendmeoverbackwards DS is now having an online week instead of in college this week, with on site week (and lateral flow testing) next week. Mocks pushed back a week to 18th January. Not that I am convinced they will be on site by then. They alternate Y12/Y13 with on site/online weeks. They say they have contingency plans of students have to miss one or more mocks through self-isolation, but no indication of what will happen should schools shut again.

Happy New Year one and all :-)

DD school still planning to test all of them this week, so each year group going in just for the test and then coming home. Filled out the NHS paperwork at the weekend. Her slot is Wednesday morning. They then recommence full timetable on-line lessons Thursday and Friday. Further test on Sunday, then back to school Monday 11th (unless it all changes again) or they never receive the lft's, which is of course a further possibility.

She has just realised she will be in History Tuesday morning.... when she gets her Oxford result... lovely teacher, but feeling a bit more pressure as it is History, and they were all so supportive of her application.
