New thread, trying to be upbeat!

Old thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/higher_education/3996883-University-2020-8-Use-the-CAGs-don-t-use-the-CAGs?pg=40

Um, Kendal Mint Cake? Maybe some long life pastry/cake products like individual packaged croissants. If you don’t have a kettle even pot noodle would be tricky.

Dd is already anxious about the rules and implications should she break them even inadvertently. Today she had a course related call and was invited to meet others at an event later. When she got there she realised the group was already larger (or 2 smaller) so made her excuses and left. How is this good for settling and mh?

KingscoteStaff · 16/09/2020 18:38

I have given myself a stern talking to after I said 'What a pity DS won't get to.....' for the 3rd time today.

He doesn't know what other people's experiences have been - his first year will be his normality.

tangoboxing · 16/09/2020 18:50

Kingscote that's exactly the view I'm forcing myself to take. It's really hard sometimes though. They've been royally screwed.

Hoghgyni · 16/09/2020 18:51

Oh dear, watching the local news & there are already complaints about students failing to social distance or wear masks on Falmouth buses on Saturday night. I do hope that they don't give into peer pressure and forget the risks.

Hoghgyni · 16/09/2020 18:54

Back to the jolly thread title, if anyone has DC down here in the SW, they have had glorious weather today to help settle them in at one of the loveliest towns to host a university.

aibutohavethisusername · 16/09/2020 19:31

How are those parents with offspring already there coping with the empty nest?

legallady · 16/09/2020 19:48

Oh well it was bound to happen but I didn't think it would be quite so soon.
My DS in one of the infamous Pollock catered halls has been told that one of his bubble is showing Covid symptoms so the whole household must now self isolate for 14 days. They are basically restricted to their bedrooms and the shared pantry (not a kitchen). Meals will be delivered to their doors. Well i guess it's as good a way as any for binding with your bubble. No one else is showing symptoms so that's good, but it would be even better if they could get a test......

TheDrsDocMartens · 16/09/2020 19:59

Dd2 and flat are in isolation (can’t get tests)

sammyjoanne · 16/09/2020 20:13

@choirmumoftwo

Thank you for the new thread. DD off to Lancaster next week and booked her moving in slot this morning. She's in a self catered townhouse of 12 so quite a big bubble and hopefully a good opportunity to socialise. DS goes back to Cardiff for final year on Saturday. We'll be proper empty nesters then!
Hi my DD is also off to Lancaster next week. Grizedale college townhouse of 12 too :) What subject is she studying?
AChickenCalledDaal · 16/09/2020 20:17

aibu I am coping by distracting myself and giving myself things to look forward to. So I've just started an online art class which is definitely not something I'd have prioritised during the last 18 months of open days, applications, STEP exams etc etc etc And very suited to pandemic life.

What has surprised and delighted me is that DD has wanted to have Zoom calls most evenings, so we've probably spoken more in the last couple of weeks than we did for most of the summer. It's different, but I'm trying to embrace it. Still a few emotional wobbles but we're both adapting.

SeasonFinale · 16/09/2020 20:20

Checking in but not sure if I am supposed to as it has changed to a uni thread and DS is having a gap year

LIZS · 16/09/2020 20:28

@legallady which hall is that? Dd hasn't heard of it yet.

Rumour has it NE likely next to go into semi lockdown, just in time for Newcastle and Durham arrivals.

Hoghgyni · 16/09/2020 20:33

SeasonFinale please stay. We're interested in his gap year adventures.

legallady · 16/09/2020 20:41

Its Turner LIZS. Just one "household" on the 4th floor

Peaseblossom22 · 16/09/2020 20:49

There seem to be a few of us with ‘gappies’ I hope we can stay ! They are all on a journey .

aibutohavethisusername · 16/09/2020 21:10

AChickenCalledDaal I hope you enjoy the art class. Glad to hear that your daughter is zooming you too.

specialted · 16/09/2020 21:15

Does anyone else have a kid going to Leeds? Dd and I booked in to arrive on Saturday evening. I won't be allowed into her hall though..

choirmumoftwo · 16/09/2020 21:32

Yes, NE back to restrictors around socialising with other households from midnight tomorrow. I don't think it will affect students in halls though - definitely an issue for second/third years in shared houses though.
Nice to hear from other Lancaster parents. DD is moving into a County townhouse - she's the one studying MORSE (not the Inspector!!)

MillicentMartha · 16/09/2020 21:41

It’s always been titled ‘University 2020’ but we’re not cliquey!

Housewifehustle · 16/09/2020 21:44

My DD is moving in to Durham on 27th, too. She hasn't been assigned a building at her college yet, though. Lucky you have an en suite confirmed.

BCBG · 16/09/2020 21:46

Waves at @choirmumoftwo @specialted @sammyjoanne - another off to Lancaster hereSmile Youngest DD is off to read Law, Lonsdale College and time argue with everyone else for a change 😂 (Bit nervous as she has ASD and ADD but hey...)

JufusMum · 16/09/2020 21:49

Thanks for the new thread. DD moves into USW on Monday and bam! Local local down starts tomorrow. Only two in her flat, two more due by the end of the week but other two rooms are vacant. She’s getting in very well with the other girl in her flat and she drive to ikea in Cardiff today taking the other girl with her and they went halves on a dish draining rack Grin
She face timed me tonight - first time she has ever done that, she wanted to talk to her hamster and her tortoise.
Now can’t leave her borough for at least two weeks and we can’t visit. Lectures start on Monday.
