That sounds good, @tinkywinkyshandbag. The very nice 3rd year helping DS assured him that socially distanced formals and silent discos were planned for this week!

We have had an ‘All good’ text, so I can sleep peacefully!

BlueSkyBurningBright · 27/09/2020 20:47

@petalpower @Empra123
Thank you that all sounds very reassuring.

specialted · 27/09/2020 21:09

Ds just text to ask where the bin liners and medical tin were. Trying not to overthink it!

KingscoteStaff · 27/09/2020 21:12

I’m guessing a small cut requiring a plaster (hopefully on a flat mate rather than your boy) and a bin bag to contain the remains of the broken wine glass.

Justyou · 27/09/2020 21:14

@BlueSkyBurningBright

York are moving in this weekend, Monday and Tuesday. Anyone moved in today? Any thing to share.
We are doing York tomorrow, so feeling all churned up inside but putting an excited mask on. I totally understand why one parent only but even if dh could run bags up the stairs it would be a huge help.
specialted · 27/09/2020 21:14

@KingscoteStaff good thinking 🤞

petalpower · 27/09/2020 21:24

@Justyou I’m sure you’d be able to do that. Other families had one parent sitting outside on benches or in their cars and the other helping and then seemed to swap over.... It’s so well organised and welcoming hopefully you will feel better when you get to York.

Empra123 · 28/09/2020 09:31

At York yesterday there were lots of second and third years hanging around outside with trolleys to help bring stuff from cars to front doors.

sammyjoanne · 28/09/2020 10:34

@Justyou we moved daughter to Lancaster and similar set up to Yorks. They said only 1 allowed but many parents were switching. Masks on and was over the moving limit of 2 hours. When you have food shopping to do afterwards, 2 hours just is not enough. Hope the move goes well :)

@specialted Yeah I would be wondering why bin liners and medical tin. The combination sounds like someones had a good night out. Daughters first night with flat, one of the lads got drunk and spilt his orange juice on the floor.

choirmumoftwo · 28/09/2020 10:59

DD seems to be settling well at Lancaster. Getting on with her housemates, has been into town and booked into a church service yesterday.
She's a bit perturbed by all the media chatter about COVID at other universities but feels very safe where she is. There's certainly a lot of information online for students should they need to isolate.
Best wishes to those still moving in and thoughts to those where things are not straightforward.

BCBG · 28/09/2020 13:49

DD sounds overtired and wobbly on the phone. Has to have prescription review with uni GP re her adhd meds but that will be on 7th October any time between 12 and 6 and it's just taken her 13 mins on hold just to sort out that booking - she won't talk to me so don't know how flat is going but sense she's struggling a bit. I guess there's nothing I can do if she won't talk and I guess she might not want to if she thinks it'll make her feel worse. Not sure what to do!

Sostenueto · 28/09/2020 14:33

Aw bless feel for u BCBG. Flowers Hope all turns out ok for her as it's such a worry when DC have health issuesxx.
Dgd just had appointment set up by uni with specialist before she arrived ( heamatology) as she has to have constant blood tests till her platelets count is over 200,000. They will have her results tomorrow which is brilliant better than her hometown hospital! But she also got to go on campus for first time so can now judge how long it will take to walk there ready for during the week for small seminars. Everything else apart from lab work online.

sammyjoanne · 28/09/2020 14:38

@choirmumoftwo glad everything is going well at County college and she is enjoying it. I felt like it was safe as well :)

@BCBG bless her I would imagine she's got a bit of homesickness with her being wobbly on the phone, most students do for the first couple of weeks. At least your daughter has sorted out her booking which is good :)

Mine doesn't want to talk at all. Saturday on moving day: its like 'hi mum, had a good night, where's there drawing pins?'

I finally had another update 10 mins ago. '' hi mum, booked library next Tuesday night'.

It was only when I asked her if she had a good quiz night last night, I got that she booked a table at the club 'Glow' for UV night tonight for her flat mates. I'm pretty sure if she thinks she is in contact too much, it will fuel the homesickness more, so she's still checking in from time to time with short texts, but that's it :)

MrsMcMuffins · 28/09/2020 15:08

DD has been told to self isolate as someone in her halls has tested positive for COVID. There is security outside and she does not know how they will get food. To be honest I am fuming and universities really need to step out their care for these youngsters now.

sammyjoanne · 28/09/2020 16:02

@MrsMcMuffins Is it the household she's in(the flat) or elsewhere in the building? And Im not surprised you would be fuming, the uni should do more. Hopefully they will be able to send care packages with food and toiletries in.

MrsMcMuffins · 28/09/2020 16:06

@sammyjoanne, students have tested positive both in her flat and elsewhere in the building. DD has one apple and some chicken nuggets. Another student in her flat has only vodkaHmm

HuaShan · 28/09/2020 16:09

Where is she MrsMcMuffins ? I really hope the university get their act together. In hard times though I can see an army of local Mumsnetters offering to help out! (I certainly would). It's pretty difficult to get an online slot - where I live the nearest one is 2 weeks away Hmm. DS has not gone yet but I am sending him with at least a weeks worth of food (he is self catered anyway)

MrsMcMuffins · 28/09/2020 16:11

She is at Exeter. I am obviously also worried about her getting sick all alone reallySad

Sostenueto · 28/09/2020 16:33

mrsmcmuffins so sorry yr DD been caught up in Covid. Is she self catered? If I were her I'd be into uni care team straight away for food. It's an ever changing situation and unis are struggling as members of staff also have to isolate.
I sent Dgd off shopping today just in case she gets locked down told her to do masses of shopping in case she gets isolated ( self catered). She's in London which I expect to be locked down soon too. Our poor DC have really had it bad this year☹️

Sostenueto · 28/09/2020 16:35

Glad Dgd has ensuite too!

Frazzled6 · 28/09/2020 16:57

There are quite a few volunteer mums on the Facebook page who will help out in these situations.... If you don't have link let me know... Wiwikau

sammyjoanne · 28/09/2020 17:10

@MrsMcMuffins if its in her flat, I'm sorry to say she would have to self isolate; the same way we would if a family member catches covid. It's such a shame. Definitely get university to organise food. Hopefully just eat or something can still deliver for tonight, and have a delivery of shopping from asda/tesco etc.

MrsMcMuffins · 28/09/2020 17:24

I understand she has to self isolate, but it’s totally different than self isolating at home with your family isn’t it? I don’t think it’s that easy for them to sign up for Tesco deliveries either. She has no contact with any uni staff except for the security guard outside stopping anyone from leaving their accommodation. DD gets on well with the others in her flat and I think a fairly tough cookie, but if you don’t and feel anxious it’s not a great way to treat 18 year olds.

minniethemooch · 28/09/2020 17:33

My daughter is also at Exeter - she says that they have had a load of emails about Covid today and that they do have a delivery service for essential items . I hope your daughter gets something sorted , Mrs McMuffins .

Monkey2001 · 28/09/2020 17:40

@MrsMcMuffins sorry to hear that. If she is trying to find a delivery slot, Iceland are often much easier to get than anywhere else.

Hope the flat manage to pull together so it does not feel like a prison term. Sad
