Following on from the previous thread as our young adults start their second year at universities up and down the land (and some overseas too!).

Same!Shock

Jano69 · 09/10/2020 22:10

Loving all the beautiful views but @Letsgoforaskip is the winner for me!

DS got his result today - positive!

I hope his symptoms stay mild. So far he has cold symptoms only and his friend, who also tested positive today, has only experienced a headache.

Wondering how I'll sleep tonight...

M for us too @bigTillyMint

Benjispruce2 · 09/10/2020 22:14

Hope he’s ok @Jano69.
Ok, second letter is A.

Witchend · 09/10/2020 22:17

The picture from dd's window she sent is very very wet. She was sending it to show the wonderful water feature otherwise known as running water down the road though.
I told her it was nicer than the current water feature running through our kitchen roof though.

@Jano69 hope he stays mild.

bigTillyMint · 10/10/2020 07:35

@Benjispruce2 and @Jano69 I have PMd you Grin

Hope your DS recovers as fast as all the others seem to be @Jano69

Letsgoforaskip · 10/10/2020 10:31

Very best wishes for everyone with a DC who has tested positive or is self isolating. We all know they are adults and we have to let go but it certainly can be challenging! I hope you did sleep @Jano69 💐☕️

bengalcat · 10/10/2020 11:53

Yes mine had runny nose and cough - positive ( impressed with speed of results though tested yesterday late afternoon result back this am - that’s faster than many of my colleagues at work NHS ) .

Jano69 · 10/10/2020 12:20

@bengalcat sorry to hear of another positive - must've been the college frepping for our two! I think most of our freppers have succumbed. Wishing yours a speedy recovery.

Thank you @Letsgoforaskip, I got a good 7 hours last night.

Jano69 · 10/10/2020 12:24

Oops wrong choice of word in my previous post, I think I meant to say most of our freppers have "gone down with it".

Uni Dd has bailed and moved out of her uni house. She has a very challenging (mentally) flatmate which is making a bad situation worse. They told Uni about this person which covered themselves if anything happened but when the person found out it made the situation very unpleasant. Flatmates and her got tested as closest flatmate had symptoms and she isolated herself but they all came back negative(!). So it was a sign to get out before this Fri/Sat when she was worried about parties before lockdown. She’s staying nearby our home now. It was an easy decision once they put everything online. School Dd has had 10 cases (half year groups and teachers) and it is likely we’ll get it sooner than later. To be honest I would rather have her nearby if we have complications - not that I told her that.

At least she had a month being out of home and a couple of socially distanced meals/drinks out with her nice flatmates. And she had a lovely view too!

Roll on half-term.

Ginfordinner · 10/10/2020 13:51

Oh no Zanda. What are the other house share people doing? Has she other accommodation to go to when and if they start face to face again?

I hope everyone's DC who have tested positive just get a mild case and recover quickly. Newcastle University now has over 1,000 students who have tested positive.

bengalcat · 10/10/2020 14:00

Mine says she just gets an occ bout of coughing but it’s much better than last years ‘ freshers flu ‘ thing

Zandathepanda · 10/10/2020 14:26

Hello Gin other flatmates doing a mixture of things. She will go back when they resume face to face to the same flat - the others are lovely and they have handled it impeccably.

Ginfordinner · 10/10/2020 14:58

I hope she benefits from being near home over the next few weeks Zanda.

bigTillyMint · 10/10/2020 15:09

Oh gosh @Zandathepanda so sorry for your DD and nice flatmates. Is the other a randomer who has joined their flat? I have forgotten - is she in uni accommodation or private.
Glad she and you are all OK with her moving back near home.

Jano69 · 10/10/2020 15:26

@Zandathepanda gosh this is a challenging time for all of us isn't it? Sounds like your family's made the right decision in the circumstances.

Since DS tested positive yesterday, two more of his housemates have also tested positive. The fourth housemate has tested negative but they think the cold he had a couple of weeks ago was in face Covid. At least they're all in this together.

simbobs · 10/10/2020 15:32

So many DC now seem to be succumbing to this virus. I think it inevitable and hope that all recover with no complications. My DS did not seem to have caught it via his gf last weekend but someone in his seminar group tested positive so they put yesterday's seminar online. Disaster, sound poor and then it crashed.
Now he has lost his sense of taste and smell, but can't decide whether it is just a cold. He has tried several times to book a test but keeps being told that there are none available. His flat are meant to be self isolating together, though one or two of them are not taking it seriously at all. He is also running out of food and I really don't know what they are going to do. He is in private student accommodation, really not accessible from outside. I don't want to have to go there on a mercy mission if I can help it. We do not have online accounts with any supermarket. I'm sure he won't starve but I am annoyed that he didn't stock up when we talked about this very scenario a couple of weeks ago.

Zandathepanda · 10/10/2020 15:45

simbobs taste and smell loss are supposedly the most obvious difference between cold and Covid. The ‘thing’ going round Newcastle students is to make the most of this by eating a really hot curry you couldn’t normally stand. Not that that is remotely sensible but it did make me laugh.

Zandathepanda · 10/10/2020 15:54

simbob forgot to add that Amazon do some food items. Could that tide him over??

Uni Dd was in private accommodation - knew the others but the one flatmate had gone home a lot. Don’t really want to say too much more as specialists involved with the flatmate.

simbobs · 10/10/2020 16:46

@zandathepanda I hadn't thought about Amazon. I will take a look. Apparently a parent of one of the others came over with a big shop for their own DS, so I guess it is every man for himself. Shame really, as I thought they would be better organised. DS has given up trying to get a test. He is making the assumption that he has it and isolating accordingly. He has just messaged me that it will be a week before he can get a delivery slot. Off to check out Amazon forthwith.

Horsemad · 10/10/2020 16:57

I don't think I could have just got food for mine & not the rest of the flat. I'd have had to get enough for them all to have some, even if it were stuff like pizza, & ready meals.

Zandathepanda · 10/10/2020 17:37

simbobs that is appalling re the other parent! How could they have that mentality?!

simbobs · 10/10/2020 17:48

I know! And I am quite surprised at them tbh. They are actually nice people. Hopefully the son will share.

icanbewhatiwant · 10/10/2020 17:55

@simbobs I'm drivable distance from ds (45 mins) so if they had to isolate I could pick up food. No way would I buy for just ds though! Unless of course the others were sorted. I'd have to shop for them all.
