Laptop recommendation for math student

DS is going to be doing Math at uni and needs a new laptop.

This is my first DC to go to uni so not sure what to get or whether I should wait till he gets to uni before getting one.

If you have DC doing / have done similar course, what would they recommend? Thanks

as you use 'Math', I assume you are in the USA? Even so, I can't think of any reason why a laptop needs any peculiar extra functions to study mathematics.

I think the degree requires some software like MatLab but I have never used this.

Matlab says you need:
Minimum: Any Intel or AMD x86-64 processor. Recommended: Any Intel or AMD x86-64 processor with four logical cores and AVX2 instruction set support.
Minimum: 2.9 GB of HDD space for MATLAB only, 5-8 GB for a typical installation. Recommended: An SSD is recommended.
Minimum: 4 GB. Recommended: 8 GB.
