University 2020 :8: Use the CAGs, don’t use the CAGs...

...if you can use the mocks, then use the mocks but not if they're higher than the CAGs.

And hopefully on to university!

Hooray if that’s true! Even though my son in year 12 will be affected next year- that was the least unfair thing to do!

AWanderingMinstrel · 17/08/2020 14:31

So now students from Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales will have CAG grades for GCSE. If England does not do the same surely that would be a bigger travesty- fingers crossed they see the light!

DuckyMcDuck · 17/08/2020 14:36

And A'Levels in Wales. Grin

DuckyMcDuck · 17/08/2020 14:39

For those that have received accommodation details, especially for Warwick, do you have set moving in times during the week?

I work in a school and so will have real problems getting time off on a weekday.

IvySquirrel · 17/08/2020 14:39

I'm the parent of a Y13 who thankfully got the grades for his first choice and an Admissions tutor. As usual we over offered as described by PP and have absolutely no wriggle room at all as the course has practical classes which will have to be strictly controlled in numbers due to social distancing. The government can remove caps as much as it likes, we physically won't be able to take everyone.

My son is in a private school and contrary to popular belief has friends who have been downgraded and lost places.

This is a shambles and the last week has been a nightmare.

MillicentMartha · 17/08/2020 14:43

Well, let’s see what this reported 4pm announcement is all about. Crossing fingers for those adversely affected. I suspect DS got his CAGs for his results so makes no difference here, but I dislike seeing the injustice. Last week I thought the algorithm was a good idea - I can safely say I don’t think that anymore.

So if CAGs were used, how does that work for university places?
Have universities held open places for everyone just incase?

With some of DD's friends they lost places at first choices due to their results, but knew their mocks might not have been high enough. School didn't realise CAGs quickly, and even then only if people pushed for them. So they had to move quick to secure a place somewhere for September, esp as the Government said they were not going to change them.

And then now potenitally:
So results changed to CAG but first choice places have already rejected them, so the kids have now taken up insurance or clearing places, and their first choice courses are full.

I'm assuming for these kids nothing will change for them. They will get better grades but they'll have still lost their first choice place anyway.

MillicentMartha · 17/08/2020 14:52

I suspect you may be right, Aragog but if the 5% cap is lifted that may free us a few more places.

Gymntonic · 17/08/2020 14:55

@Aragog it will depend on the university and the course. They'll have ti rewrite their FAQs on clearing and appeals that's for sure

Aragog · 17/08/2020 14:58

Fingers crossed for those who are holding places too.
I really do hope it works out for lots of students.

It won't affect DD now, but the higher grades will be a boost if nothing else for her after all this mess.

Newgirls · 17/08/2020 15:10

The issue is medicine places and other over subscribed places. The unis simply can’t fit them all in. Heaven knows we do need more doctors etc but we have failed to provide enough training facilities. No idea how that will play out.

FabTab · 17/08/2020 15:18

42 mins to go and DT are reporting u turn
Good luck everyone

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 17/08/2020 15:27

Thankful we live in Wales and the Welsh Government are going with the CAG's. It makes no difference to my dd as she is more than happy with her second choice. I do hope that England follows suit.

Lightuptheroom · 17/08/2020 15:34

I don't know if this will change anything for my son as school have still not released the CAG to me so I have no way of knowing if he would have made his firm offer, his grade for the course he wanted was very low, so I imagine it went down by 2 grades. Will have to wait and see

titchy · 17/08/2020 15:34

Have universities held open places for everyone just incase?

No.

FabTab · 17/08/2020 15:35

Just had email from local (Tory) mp. He says:
What has happened is unacceptable, and I completely understand the anger and frustration of students, parents and teachers.

Reading between the lines he knows what the announcement will say and thinks we’ll be happy.
Hope so
