University 2020 :8: Use the CAGs, don’t use the CAGs...

...if you can use the mocks, then use the mocks but not if they're higher than the CAGs.

And hopefully on to university!

Of course, Omelette, we’re all different and your post was humorous and self deprecating, unlike some previous posts by other posters.

Am just stragglers that any school who won on the small cohort lottery is declaring so on a website. Surely keeping one's head down would be the more normal reaction. Esp as there will be no league tables and I expect that independent schools group will similarly skip a year of sharing data

LaureBerthaud · 17/08/2020 10:15

@MillicentMartha

Ah, don’t feed trolls. I got tempted earlier, sorry.
Oh give over! Happy to go back to lurking but won't be called a troll for pointing out that most young adults (exc SEN) should be capable of making appointments, packing, etc before they head off to university.

And still want me at the dentist at 21. We go for lunch after. It's called having a lovely relationship with your kids I thought

Unless your NT 21 year old has a severe dental phobia, I don't understand why they'd want a parent there. Are you sure it's not a case of them knowing you want to be there and not having the heart to tell you no?

Omelette9 · 17/08/2020 10:25

Actually, I agree with you @LaureBerthaud. It is somewhat ridiculous to take NT grown-up children to the dentist!

mumsneedwine · 17/08/2020 10:27

@LaureBerthaud 😂 my DD is a medical student. Who is fine with things thanks. We just arrange to go to dentist together and then go for lunch. Done it since she was 12. Just because they want us there doesn't mean they need us.
The ritual Ikea trip on results day is fun. Free meatballs and full of parents and teens buying stuff.
I am assuming you don't have older kids yet. I still do things with my mum & I'm 53.

mumsneedwine · 17/08/2020 10:29

More importantly I am hoping there is some news on appeals or throwing away the algorithm today. Andy Burnham taking legal action I believe. The more horror stories that come out the more we realise how unfair this has all been.

Gymntonic · 17/08/2020 10:30

@Michaelahpurple I guess they're desperate to to recruit in the current climate and this farce will be making even more parents anxious about sixth form choices, I'm sure.
Some are wanting it both ways - crowing about the increase in performance in the less popular (CAG awarded) subjects whilst lamenting those who have been disappointed by the algorithm.
My particular fave is the school that celebrated its "30%" increase in A * and A from 18.3% to 48.1%. No that's actually an increase of 165%!

Divoc2020 · 17/08/2020 10:34

The next problem if they give 2020 students their CAGs will be that it will screw things up for the 2021 cohort.

2021 students will face lost teaching time and will then be up against a significant % of 2020 students who have deferred either through choice or necessity, and they will have massively inflated grades!

Divoc2020 · 17/08/2020 10:37

@LaureBerthaud - our dentist is a good 30 min drive away and the DCs (20 and 18) are very happy for me to give them a lift then spend money on them in town!

seedybird · 17/08/2020 10:41

@MillicentMartha

Ah, don’t feed trolls. I got tempted earlier, sorry.
@MillicentMartha - It made me laugh! DD and I didn't know what the acronym meant, so we had to look it up Blush. We laughed so much and will add it to our list Grin
BalloonSlayer · 17/08/2020 10:42

@LaureBerthaud I agree that DC about to go to University should be able to do all this stuff for themselves.

I think what it is, is that some of us (myself included) are clinging on to our last few weeks of being Mum. For me (my DD is my second child to go away to Uni) I am once again gripped with the realisation that I only had her for eighteen or so years, and I am about to lose her. And it feels like the last thing I can do for her is to see that everything is ready and as good as possible for her before she sets sail into her fantastic new life without me and DH. Waaaaaah!! Sentimental claptrap I know but I felt exactly the same about DC1's departure for Uni and I will feel the same if and when DC3 eventually goes.

I do not say any of this to the DCs though as I know it's not about me.

I know she will come back, as DC1 does regularly but she's still my baby!

Gymntonic · 17/08/2020 10:44

@Divoc2020 the data shows that for some groups, especially those in FE and sixth form, the grades have been artificially deflated. Lower even that the average since the reintroduction of linear A levels. Based solely on their community date. That's indirect discrimination and illegal.
Whether they take away the inflated grades from those who have been favoured by this process is another matter - personally I very much doubt it and wouldn't wish that on anyone- but it doesn't change the fact that the grades for some pupils must and will, eventually, be found to awarded in ways that breach the law.
If the issue is a place in university for the deserving in both 2020 and 2021 then the answer is pretty simple. Expand capacity, lift the cap, use contingency, spend some of the mighty endowments.

SabrinaThwaite · 17/08/2020 10:47

My particular fave is the school that celebrated its "30%" increase in A and A from 18.3% to 48.1%. No that's actually an increase of 165%!*

It is a 30 percentage point increase though.

MillicentMartha · 17/08/2020 10:50

But it’s not a 30% increase! Probably not written by a maths teacher.

LaureBerthaud · 17/08/2020 10:52

I completely empathise @BalloonSlayer - I have one DD(15) and I will be bereft when/if she goes to university! The house will feel so strange without her joie de vivre. No doubt i will be trailing behind her in Ikea begging her to let me buy her MORE stuff Grin

Aragog · 17/08/2020 11:15

Well we have sent off an application form for a private flat now. Its a modern ensuite one with 3 other girls - all single applicants recently booked, so hopefully maybe at least one other who is a first year. Just awaiting the legal documents bit back to pay the holding fee. Hoping no one has got int here before us. If that comes through we will pay the holding fee and then view at the weekend.

If something came back from the official halls and DD prefers that option we will just lose the holding fee, which we've said we'd be prepared to do. Just wanted something decent settled for her so she can start to make plans. Apparently the halls for those going through insurance or learning are very limited and won't know for another 2-3 weeks or so, so better to have something she'd be happy with ready and waiting too.

Just on pins waiting to confirm it with the holding fee now though.

SabrinaThwaite · 17/08/2020 11:19

@MillicentMartha

But it’s not a 30% increase! Probably not written by a maths teacher.
And if you read the statement on the school website, I doubt it was written by an English teacher either!
Monkey2001 · 17/08/2020 11:21

@Aragog well done for moving so quickly, what a roller-coaster few days you have had!

choirmumoftwo · 17/08/2020 11:29

Place marking

thesunwillout · 17/08/2020 11:39

LaureB

That's the problem, you don't understand.

Come back with your smuggy Mc smugface after your DD has aced GCSEs and Alevels.

Or was meant to ace A levels but has had bad results.

There's alot you don't understand.

DadDadDad · 17/08/2020 11:45

From The Guardian:
Sam Freedman, the former senior policy advisor to the then-education secretary Michael Gove, said he is “pretty certain” that the government will pull a screeching U-turn and switch back to teacher-assessed grades

Tweet is here: twitter.com/Samfr/status/1295268897940217856

Aragog · 17/08/2020 12:05

Monkey2001 - thanks. DD just wants things sorted so she can move on from Thursday. Once somethings are settled she will feel happier and can make plans. Just wish the lettings agency would send the next documents - don't think i can call them again this morning, lol!

LimitIsUp · 17/08/2020 12:10

Praying that Sam Freedman is right

TheDrsDocMartens · 17/08/2020 12:18

Too late for some students who are sorting other offers

Bumbl · 17/08/2020 12:32

Lewis Goodall (on Twitter) is reporting that there will be an announcement to Tory MPs at 4pm.

I have so much sympathy with everyone who this has affected. Just came on to say that there is lots on twitter from him and others which may be useful for you all on here.
