...if you can use the mocks, then use the mocks but not if they're higher than the CAGs.

And hopefully on to university!

As the Uk! (not the Times)

TheDrsDocMartens · 17/08/2020 06:33

I was involved in another campaign during the time Johnson was ill. We had word from Downing Street then that no one would make decisions while he was off. I suspect nothing will change at least while he is on holiday. But doubt it will because they’d have to change GCSEs too.

Sostenueto · 17/08/2020 06:35

Grammar schools now kicking off saying on average 6% lower grades than previous years Ofqual split half wanting just CAGS used. Gavin digging in. Suggestions of delaying GCSE results..... You couldn't make it up!

Cafeconleche · 17/08/2020 07:44

Northern Ireland have just announced that CAGs will be used for their GCSE results. Over to you Gav...

Peaseblossom22 · 17/08/2020 07:49

Sixth form colleges now in R4 saying they have found a hole in the algorithm . Saying 97% of grades determined by the computer and that in every subject the A levels are below the three year average .

Suggesting they rerun the algorithm with the error corrected with grades protected from going down. With one mass appeal .

LimitIsUp · 17/08/2020 07:52

That's interesting

Cafeconleche · 17/08/2020 08:16

@Peaseblossom22 - DS’s SFC has had some of their worst results ever, in spite of the fact that last year’s A*/A grades rose by over 30%. Completely overridden by an algorithm which didn’t even work according to Ofqual’s own guidelines.

Peaseblossom22 · 17/08/2020 08:18

Even Eton is on the case now . Maybe the chance if Tory donors being affected will get things moving . Sad

franden99 · 17/08/2020 08:29

If things revert to CAGs for A levels, does anyone know what will happen to the 2% whose grades went up? Will they go down?

LimitIsUp · 17/08/2020 08:29

Well, they should

LaureBerthaud · 17/08/2020 08:36

I wish I’d had parents like you helping to organise packing and dentist appointments!

For decades young adults managed all this without being micromanaged by parents. DD is only 15 and is more independent than some of your kids!

I was just thinking about this too. I really don't think they would take grades off students and replace them with lower ones. It does mean that the grade inflation that they worry about would be even greater than they originally stated though doesn't it. There is absolutely nothing they can do to make this right now - it's too late for many. Be interesting to see if they just walk in to the same mess on Thursday with GCSEs. Obviously if they decide not to piss off 4 million kids and go with CAG then I can't see how they can't do the same for A level. They would have to declare that they didn't have faith in the algorithm and were reverting to CAG so would be ridiculous to try and say it was ok for A level.
Gymntonic · 17/08/2020 08:56

I've been looking at a Twitter thread by Dr Georgina Porter who's compiling a list of the small independents who are boasting on their websites and sm of greatly inflated grades. One school is recording a 165% increase in A * and A grades on last year.
@Peaseblossom22 the head of A level studies at our FE college emailed at the weekend with CAGs and a message that they were indeed looking with other colleges nationally at a class action appeal, presumably on the grounds of indirect discrimination. They're heavily involved with BTECs and GCSEs too, of course.
FFT have a number of short and easily accessible articles on their FFTdata site explaining how and why the algorithm favours some groups over others. Will find time to send them to my still unresponsive Tory MP
@TheDrsDocMartens did that coincide with the time that Cummings was indisposed too? I think they'll simply carry on regardless. But the law will eventually catch up with them and grades will hopefully be corrected down the line. Too late for some though, who cant afford years out, due to loss of family benefits when they leave education etc.
Was reading about one young man who had dropped grades and Pembroke has put him on hold pending appeals. Pembroke is the outreach Cambridge college for a number of Northern LAs including ours so my interest was piqued. He simply can't afford a year out to let the appeal run its course. I understood the very reason Oxbridge colleges had such large endowments was to enable them to stand aloof from the role of finishing schools for the rich. Where there's a will there's a way and it's clear to see that some colleges are more willing to do the correct thing than others.

@MillicentMartha ODFOD

Why? It's bizarre that some of you are sending your DC off so unprepared for the world.

Sostenueto · 17/08/2020 09:04

If those 2% whose results were higher than their cags and they award CAGS those 2% who already have offers cannot then lose their places because you already have a contract with uni and you can sue them for breach of contract.

seashellssand · 17/08/2020 09:05

@LaureBerthaud and it's bizzare that you're passing judgement on other people's children. you don't know the situation with these children: SEN, MH or who just simply need a extra bit of help. Putting other parents down during an especially stressful time is frankly horrible. let's try and keep this thread a positive and safe place for all- that includes not giving out unsolicited advice and comments.

Yes it was when Cummings was on his tour of the NE.
LaureBerthaud · 17/08/2020 09:35

It's not "frankly horrible" @seashellssand - it's a valid observation. However, i shall leave you to your lists and Ikea trips. Best of luck to all!

Exactly WSS @seashellssand

mumsneedwine · 17/08/2020 09:48

My children want me to go shopping with them. And still want me at the dentist at 21. We go for lunch after. It's called having a lovely relationship with your kids I thought.

Omelette9 · 17/08/2020 09:49

The trouble is that getting your DC is such a lovely project for a mother, irrespective of whether it's best for your DC if you manage it for them. All those lovely lists and shopping trips.

I have been guilty of it too, with DC1. But I learned my lesson, and DC2 largely managed it independently.

Peregrina · 17/08/2020 09:53

I must say, I found lists and shopping trips a bit of a pain, and was quite glad when one of mine did it all independently. Perhaps I was a bad mother - I think DCs would say (joking I hope) that the jury is out on that one.

MillicentMartha · 17/08/2020 09:54

Ah, don’t feed trolls. I got tempted earlier, sorry.

I am mother of two DC at uni. My opinion may differ to yours, but that's life!
