University 2020 :8: Use the CAGs, don’t use the CAGs...

...if you can use the mocks, then use the mocks but not if they're higher than the CAGs.

And hopefully on to university!

@ThingDoer dd has had her accommodation offer a while as she held an unconditional place. Last year she was allocated a private hall a little way out but pulled out. This year she is at Pollock and catered. Not sure if coin or app laundry though, don't think that was one of her (many) criteria!

MillicentMartha · 22/08/2020 09:57

I’m sending DS with 3 weeks worth of pants in the hope that he does laundry that often!

@LIZS sounds good - dd definitely did not want catered/Pollok. So that was a relief. We're away from home now (a lot further north and west of Edinburgh - family origins) so reliant on 4G to respond to anything.

Ironoaks · 22/08/2020 13:02

I don't think DS owns more than 10 pairs of pants. He will only wear seam-free underwear and has a 25" waist, and the places we've bought from before no longer stock any. Luckily he is already doing his own laundry weekly.

MillicentMartha · 22/08/2020 14:00

I have bought DS some new ones especially for uni as his old ones were getting quite old and best not seen in public (or the laundrette.) Why are men’s pants so expensive? I bet seam-free ones are even pricier, Ironoaks.

TKMaxx for pants!

TudorChimney · 22/08/2020 17:10

Sainsbury's for pants too - could not believe the price in Next or M and S!

MillicentMartha · 22/08/2020 17:49

I did do Sainsbury’s and was still shocked how much 15 pairs cost! £11 for 3, £55 for pants! And that’s only 2 weeks worth.

We definitely need to do a pants shop. And pyjamas too in the name of decency if he's in a flat with 11 others.

mumsneedwine · 22/08/2020 18:11

DD will only wear VS pants. Now they are stupidly expensive for flimsy bits of tiny fabric.

MillicentMartha · 22/08/2020 18:29

OMG, pyjamas!

MillicentMartha breathe!

Bought some good old Primark PJ's for DD. We're trying to keep luggage to a minimum as prob have to train it the 3 hour trip.
So DD can buy more PJ's etc when she gets there.

I can drive but my illness means not that far.

I'm planning on sending a box of other stuff up to her after couple days

oneofthegiantsisme · 22/08/2020 18:38

Glad to hear your opinion of the autism support team at Exeter, Empra123 - DS has been in touch with them, and they've seemed pretty good, so I'm pleased that opinion is borne out.

DS got his first choice of accommodation - he's in Rowe House, and I'm guessing he's in the quiet blocks, since that's what he requested.

We did the Ikea run on Thursday - the hall now looks like a bomb site!

JufusMum · 22/08/2020 18:58

DD has enough pants to last a lifetime!
We drove to Pontypridd today where DD will be starting at USW. Had a quick look around (closed) campus, worked out roughly where her room is and had a walk around the town. DD popped into the local Frankie and Bennys having previously worked for TRG Plc at Chiquitos to enquire if there may be any vacancies and walked out with a ten hour a week contract to start mid September! Very proud!

Gymntonic · 22/08/2020 19:21

Things are starting to move. Well done on the job offer! Getting in quickWink
Email from Birmingham reinstating original course today. And it looks like that stretches to accommodation too.
Also started a pile in the hallway 😂

HuaShan · 22/08/2020 19:24

Great going Jufus and a great way to meet new friends too. I too have been buying pants....

specialted · 22/08/2020 19:27

Great news @Gymntonic !

Oratory1 · 22/08/2020 19:28

Not sure about pyjamas but definitely recommend a decent dressing gown for when they want to make coffee and find flat mates parents visiting in the kitchen 😂

seedybird · 22/08/2020 19:34

I've been buying bits and pieces for a while now but DD's faves at the moment, are the test tube shot glasses from Poundland and some artificial plants from Ikea. I bought some super-soft ear plugs for her, for those moments when your next-door neighbour might be having a late-night, enthusiastic, romantic moment Wink

mumsneedwine · 22/08/2020 19:35

And for the middle of the night fire alarms 🤓

mumsneedwine · 22/08/2020 19:36

Dressing gown. Not ear plugs. Although DD1 has slept through a few

sandybayley · 22/08/2020 20:55

DS1 has a much loved onesie. Would that be too humiliating to use rather than a dressing gown?

Badgerstmary · 22/08/2020 21:26

Onesies are fantastic. See no problem with them at all. They’re definitely decent.

TerfTerfTerf · 22/08/2020 21:48

Dressing gown for the impromptu liaison who wants to go to the loo down the corridor in the middle of the night 😉 (although I told DS it was to keep him warm in the northern winter...)

TheTeenageYears · 23/08/2020 11:29

For anyone who can't take DC in a car have a look at Sendmybags.com. It's a luggage sending service booked online but fulfilled through DHL and very reasonable for services in the U.K. It takes a few days so could be sent in advance ready for the first full day it can be received. Suitcases and boxes are accepted just makes sure you put the dimensions and weight into the booking or quote correctly. We have used to send things to DS at boarding school and to and from Europe. It beats trying to take public transport with luggage.
