University 2020 :8: Use the CAGs, don’t use the CAGs...

...if you can use the mocks, then use the mocks but not if they're higher than the CAGs.

And hopefully on to university!

@Xenia I would seriously consider it if we could afford it! And everybody has to understand with an appeal they could lower the grade further!

Xenia · 21/08/2020 08:22

Good point on lowering grades risk - I remember with the occasional traditional remark or appeal my children had to balance that risk too and sometimes did not therefore appeal or challenge the grade.
On the legal side if there is a travesty over the mark and if it will matter (for example for some careers like the bigger law firms AAB is the minimum grades for most big firms before they being to consider the thousands of applicants per place with those grades and higher) then paying £200 for a legal letter might work or it might put up the backs of the school. I agree that going further than that and going to court is not going to be worth it other than in cases like the Good Law project are bringing goodlawproject.org/news/a-level-results-fiasco/.

We're not taking it any further if ds is knocked back by firm choice. It's unfortunate, but he needs to have a definite plan now & not more uncertainty. He has great people skills, is very bright and will have learned from the varied adversity he's faced over the last couple of years. Onwards & upwards....

Lightuptheroom · 21/08/2020 08:56

That's what we will be doing too, thankfully he secured an unconditional insurance offer entirely on his own merit and can be proud of that as they wanted the same marks as his firm (and thank god I made him sit the external scholarship exam in January !)

ThrawnCow · 21/08/2020 13:47

Any news on Bristol accommodation, Mumsneedwine? Nothing here.

Bouledeneige · 21/08/2020 14:23

To add insult to injury my DSs school sent formal notification if his grades yesterday but sent the wrong grades - one upgraded a propos the CAGs, one not. It caused a lot of of consternation but thankfully the school instantly realised their mistake. A lot of emails must have suddenly been flying in from the students! What a shit show.

I hope people here are now getting a clearer picture of university places.

mumsneedwine · 21/08/2020 15:55

@ThrawnCow yes 😊. She got her first choice last night and is moving in on 19th. One intrepid student has made a spreadsheet they can add their names to so can see who is in their flat (although not everyone is on the chat !). How about you ?

mumsneedwine · 21/08/2020 15:56

@ThrawnCow I'd email them ([email protected]).? Fixed the moving in date for DD v quickly as induction thing wasn't working.

ThrawnCow · 21/08/2020 15:58

Nothing at all yet.

ThrawnCow · 21/08/2020 15:59

He didn't put me down as someone to communicate with so not sure if they'd correspond with me.

mumsneedwine · 21/08/2020 16:05

They spoke to me 😊. They close at 4.3p so try calling now. Has he got his confirmation email from when he applied ?

mumsneedwine · 21/08/2020 16:06

0117 954 6640

ThrawnCow · 21/08/2020 16:09

Thanks mumsneedwine. Can't do anything now as he's on the M5 driving 3 friends to Bristol for the weekend. Will be on it in Monday though 🤞.

mumsneedwine · 21/08/2020 16:10

@ThrawnCow he's going early 😂. Do you live nearby ? DD v excited but equally terrified at not knowing anyone. Their plans seem good but still won't be usual freshers week.

ThrawnCow · 21/08/2020 16:14

We're 3 hours away! He's the strong silent type so not sure how much info I'll get from him. He did say he'd try to link up online with others in his halls though. Which hall is your DD going to?

mumsneedwine · 21/08/2020 16:19

@ThrawnCow Orchard House. East village. Wanted to be able to walk everywhere.
Just be aware that the weekend moving in slots were going fast - fine if can do weekdays. DD's hall was from Friday to the Tuesday. What is DS studying ? DD is vet med so has 5 years there.

ThrawnCow · 21/08/2020 16:22

A friend's daughter was in Orchard House and loved it. DS wants catered so might be further out. He's doing Mech Eng. 4 years. So frustrating I can't get him to check his emails right now.

mumsneedwine · 21/08/2020 16:25

I'd call. They were lovely. Couldn't tell me her hall but could tell me she had a room - she was at work which is why I called for her.

ThrawnCow · 21/08/2020 16:28

I dont have any of the info like numbers or anything.

mumsneedwine · 21/08/2020 16:29

I put the admin office one on a few posts ago.

ThrawnCow · 21/08/2020 16:30

Sorry, I meant any number they allocated him.

mumsneedwine · 21/08/2020 16:31

@ThrawnCow got you. They did need her student number unfortunately. He's probably heard while driving - just not let you know yet 😊

ThrawnCow · 21/08/2020 16:35

Rang them and they told me he has an offer and for him to log on to the accommodation portal. Phew. Thanks for your help Flowers

mumsneedwine · 21/08/2020 17:22

@ThrawnCow phew. Nice to have the reassurance that they are not going to be sleeping on a park bench 😊.

thesunwillout · 21/08/2020 17:51

DD won't get a moving in date and time till they send email on 1st Sept. Bit late imo.
