Well, it’s been a crazy few days.

Old thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/higher_education/3962422-University-2020-6-The-one-with-the-results-at-the-end?watched=1&msgid=99082625#99082625

@oneofthegiantsisme Sadvery strange indeed and highly unethical ( if not against the rules) if the head has disclosed the results to that child early... and then publicized it! one last thought - was she a child from last years cohort who applied deferred so she'll be starting this year but got her grades last year?

Maybe, seashells. Anyway, it's not my problem, so I'm not going to fret about it too much!

That's sensible news about the AS grades (though not that reassuring for DS, as he was not well, so his grades weren't great and he was resitting some).

seashellssand · 12/08/2020 17:29

@oneofthegiantsisme good approach! best of luck

specialted · 12/08/2020 17:44

I'm exhausted already. Only way forward this evening is to open the wine Wine

Terrifying interview with a sixth form
Head on R4 , I hope her students weren’t listening because they are going to have a sleepless night🙁. She said 47% have been downgraded from CAG most at the top end , so A* down to a B 😮

Divoc2020 · 12/08/2020 17:54

I just hope that college publicizing their Cambridge success hasn't misunderstood the 'mocks' element of the triple lock and assumed that because she got her offer grades or more in mocks she can assume she is high and dry! I've seen a headline somewhere saying students can 'choose' which results they want out of the board grade, mock grade or autumn resit!
The mock result being higher is just the gateway to the right to appeal I think, not a guarantee?

Peaseblossom22 · 12/08/2020 17:59

Well Divoc the college would have had the actual results this morning so they must be sure .

Divoc2020 · 12/08/2020 17:59

But isn't this what another poster predicted on another thread (there was a chart). It is at this level that most of the 'optimism' has occurred presumably?
Cafeconleche · 12/08/2020 18:03

Oh god @Peaseblossom22. What fresh hell is this?? Gin

Peaseblossom22 · 12/08/2020 18:03

I thought Ofqual had said that the drop would only be one grade , the difference between A* times 3 and BBB is massive

seedybird · 12/08/2020 18:23

DD’s school is now going to issue CAG’s with the results tomorrow.

BalloonSlayer · 12/08/2020 18:40

Just raised my voice at DD.

She doesn't want to go and get her results, wants to wait for the email.

The school are putting a note in the results to say whether they want you to appeal. Results will be posted if you don't collect.

I asked how we find out how to appeal (school have not emailed parents, only students). Turns out these instructions will be with the appeal note that may or may not be with the results. Which will be arriving in the post next Tuesday when we are on holiday anyway.

Apparently that's OK as they have till September to apply.

I raised my voice expressing my opinion on this.

I am hoping curiosity will get the better of her tomorrow.

Divoc2020 · 12/08/2020 18:48

@seedybird

I can't see how schools can't now do this really. It's the first piece of information people will ask for tomorrow if they're unhappy with their results. Better to issue it automatically, rather than clog up school channels for those who need help and support.
Lightuptheroom · 12/08/2020 18:59

DS firm is in clearing, does that allow us to feel a little bit positive or could it be because they're rejecting people? Wish this was over!

MillicentMartha · 12/08/2020 19:04

The 47% is probably 47% of A* grades dropping to A, rather than all grades dropping by 47%!

Nationally it may be up to 39% of grades will drop, the vast majority by one grade. So AAA may go down to AAB as that’s roughly a third.

OP posts:
MillicentMartha · 12/08/2020 19:09

Even if 47% of grades have dropped, that’s still less than half. Ie 4 x A might go to 2x A and 2x A. It’s a sign that particular school over estimated.

You could look at one subject, say maths, they predicted 100 A grades and last year only had 53 A with the same number of students , so 47 of them will drop to an A.

DadDadDad · 12/08/2020 19:13

No, Millicent, the head who was interviewed on PM on R4 (round about 5:22pm on BBC Sounds for anyone who want to listen) specifically quoted that some of their A-stars had been downgraded to Bs.

She said they took a lot of note of their past 3 years performance and tried to make sure their assessments were in line with that, so if that's true it's baffling that they saw such a big adjustment.

Railingsohno · 12/08/2020 19:29

I’m surprised a head has given that much information out in advance of tomorrow. Seems unfair on her pupils.Angry

MillicentMartha · 12/08/2020 19:30

DadDadDad that does seem strange? I can see how an A* could fall to a B if their predictions were really top heavy vs reality, if they only had a few at A perhaps?

OP posts:
DadDadDad · 12/08/2020 19:32

Yes, it would be quite an alarming thing to hear if you were a student at that college! Mind you, given OfQual have already said 40% of grades will be moderated down, it just added to alarm for the rest of us.

KingscoteStaff · 12/08/2020 19:32

Message from DS’s school to say that email with grades will be sent at 8, immediately followed by one containing CAGs and Mocks.

DadDadDad · 12/08/2020 19:36

Yes, it's strange, and obviously she didn't go into a full analysis in a 3 minute interview. We need to see detail tomorrow of where the axe has fallen across different schools and whether moderated grades are consistently in line with historic grades. I assume we will see some of the same troubling sort of cases that we saw in Scotland.

MillicentMartha · 12/08/2020 19:40

I guess if 39% is the (possible) average, some schools will have results closer to 0% moderated down and some higher eleven than that school’s 47%.

Could someone help please?
UCAS isn't showing a course through clearing that DS wants - but it is via the university website. Is there a reason for this?
