Well, it’s been a crazy few days.

One question on clearing , people keep saying to be prepared etc but how can you know what courses to look at when you don’t know grades . Also are universities more likely to accept points in clearing, the most likely for ds is that he will have enough points but in the wrong combination of grades. Say for example he is rejected from his insurance at AAA but has A* AB is it worth calling other unis in clearing at AAA ?

Peaseblossom22 · 12/08/2020 16:14

Also most of the grades on UCAS clearing have their standard offer as the grades required. Will this change tomorrow

KingscoteStaff · 12/08/2020 16:28

@Peaseblossom22 That’s the exact situation we are preparing for here - Bristol made DS an offer but he did not accept because it was the same as his firm. We hared down there yesterday to look round, and if his firm won’t accept right points/wrong grades, he is preparing his pitch to try to persuade Bristol to take him.

Sorry meant to post this link / has details about the ucas clearing matching app which should make the whole thing much easier

Railingsohno · 12/08/2020 16:29

The universities in the ABB camp rather than the AAA camp seem to drop down to around BBC - well they did last year anyway! Worth a punt!

Aragog · 12/08/2020 16:31

ssslouu - but this quote on the article It is worth noting that recent spikes in Greater Manchester which led to the additional restrictions were centred around house parties with 17 to 18-year-olds. can't be true surely. Those children/young people are school age - school age children don't need social distancing and masks at school as they don't transmit it to the same extent - or does that only apply in school buildings and the virus knows its okay to infect them in house parties but not in a level classes??

Sssloou · 12/08/2020 16:33

I think that it depends on the uni status - supply and demand. Some might keep these grades published to attract students trading up - but the reality is that in some might take lower grades than published to fill a space bit dont want to publicise it?

Aragog · 12/08/2020 16:33

Usually yes, as they will often go by the points tally rather than just the grades.

The thing we are seeing with cellaring today is that the entry requirements for the courses in clearing are the standard grades for the courses anyway. Do these sometimes reduce after results are out? Or is it just a case of looking for courses with lower grades? And is it possible to filter just on UCAS points rather than bu course name?

DuckyMcDuck · 12/08/2020 16:45

How odd - DS's insurance choice is now in clearing with the same grade requirements.

It certainly wasn't there a couple of days ago - no idea what that means but I taking it as a good sign Grin

Peaseblossom22 · 12/08/2020 16:51

Very interesting on the Complete university guide how many of the courses are starting online . All of Exeter for example

Appuskidu · 12/08/2020 16:51

Yep-it’s the same for my DS’s insurance course!
Newgirls · 12/08/2020 16:57

I wonder if the online thing is to attract international students? That must still be a huge issue

Appuskidu · 12/08/2020 16:59

Will the UCAS online system automatically reject your first choice tomorrow, if you drop one grade?

Sssloou · 12/08/2020 17:03

No - the unis have had the results since the weekend - they have already decided who to accept from those who didn’t make the offer (if any)

wineandsunshine · 12/08/2020 17:08

I'm on edge already! It's going to be a sleepless night that's for sure.

Good luck to everyone waiting with their DC tomorrow Smile

Peaseblossom22 · 12/08/2020 17:10

Neither of my ds choices are in clearing 🙁

oneofthegiantsisme · 12/08/2020 17:11

Checking back in - it's been a quiet time here. Things are getting very tense now, though; I can see DS's MH issues spiralling back downwards again if things don't go as he hopes tomorrow, meds or no meds.

Still waiting for Wales to decide exactly what they're doing about grades, given that they don't want Welsh kids to be disadvantaged by the shenanigans elsewhere. One of DS's subjects is an English board, though, so I guess that one is covered by the English announcements.

I'm just keeping everything crossed that Exeter will take him regardless of results, really. The support teams there have been in touch, so it would be really good to know that everything's set up, rather than having to start from scratch elsewhere. His course is in Clearing, but at the same grades as his offer - not sure if that's a good sign or not.

He's asked me to come & get him at 7am tomorrow so I'm there when he checks Track (his college says it'll open then??).

Oh, and just to add to the confusion, I've just seen a lovely PR post on Facebook from DS's college about X pupil who's going to Cambridge. So she knows already, then!

Hoghgyni · 12/08/2020 17:14

Oneof Exeter already hold info on your DS and they know he genuinely wants to go there. Scope to negotiate if necessary.

seashellssand · 12/08/2020 17:16

@oneofthegiantsisme gosh, how does that child know they have a place at Cambridge ahead of everyone else? Was she on IB or an international board?

SeasonFinale · 12/08/2020 17:17

Oneof the Giants --- student Track opens at 8am officially but may open slightly earlier in reality.

7am is when the school gets the list of unplaced students

oneofthegiantsisme · 12/08/2020 17:17

No idea how she knows, seashells - that was my thought. She's done A Levels the same as the rest of them. And I don't suppose it was an unconditional from Cambridge!

MillicentMartha · 12/08/2020 17:18

Track is supposed to open at 8am. In previous years it has said 8am but has been 20-30 minutes earlier than that. This year there’s an embargo on results until 8am, so it really might not open until 8 this time.

Hoghgyni · 12/08/2020 17:19

Wales has just announced that grades will not be lower than AS results from last year.

oneofthegiantsisme · 12/08/2020 17:19

Thanks Season - that makes sense. I thought I'd seen 8, or possibly earlier.

Hey ho, I'll set the alarm and he'll get into Track when he gets in.
