Well, it’s been a crazy few days.

Old thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/higher_education/3962422-University-2020-6-The-one-with-the-results-at-the-end?watched=1&msgid=99082625#99082625

Personally I think a call to the department would be useful if there is a significant discrepancy between awarded grade vs CAG, vs mock vs UCAS predictions as they won’t have the CAG or mock data - and to state that you are appealing?

MillicentMartha · 12/08/2020 12:26

If he misses his firm choice, would his mock grades help, Appu? In which case maybe appeal and tell them that’s what he’s doing. Otherwise it might be worth a long shot to call them anyway.

He’ll be offered his insurance automatically, so long as he meets their grades, otherwise he’ll get a clearing number and they’ll handily have selected some clearing courses for him, or he can ring any others he prefers.

Thank you all! His school didn’t get to do mocks, so that’s not much use. They did do AS levels but that was the May/June the year before!

I will try to find the parent guide.

Do they all get told their CAGs tomorrow?

MillicentMartha · 12/08/2020 12:37

Do they all get told their CAGs tomorrow?

That depends on the school. I’ve no idea if DS3 will get his, he’s not heard from school since the end of term.

Just asked at DD school - they are not giving out CAGs only the official results - but if they have concerns they can make an appointment to see a teacher........less helpful I think than PP school process where they get all 3.

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 12/08/2020 12:53

So if their result is lower than their mock, and they don’t get their uni place, but they would with the mock result - do they phone the university and tell them that?

Sssloou · 12/08/2020 12:58

I would imagine so - or maybe the school would need to do that for them?

suze28 · 12/08/2020 13:00

DDs school have emailed and said that they will appeal on behalf of anyone awarded a grade less than their mock grade. They call mocks PPEs (Pre Public Examinations) and hold them in November under strict exam conditions.

Sssloou · 12/08/2020 13:02

Maybe schools and Unis are involved in that process today? Do schools know what the unis have decided - or do they only have exam results and have to wait for UCAS tomorrow?

sandybayley · 12/08/2020 13:05

I'm here. We have champagne and moonpig card. Can't be bothered to bake as it's too darned hot. In fact it's too darn hot to care about anything much.

DS1 swings wildly from hysteria to normality. DS2 (Year 10) is claiming special knowledge that all will be well as he's been tipped off by a reliable source. Who is this reliable source? Does my 14 year old son have a source in Ofqual? God children can be annoying.

sandybayley · 12/08/2020 13:07

Maybe DS2 has hacked the schools computers? I round the put it past him as he has also been revealed today as the admin on one of the many meme accounts linked to his school which annoys the SLT. Don't worry, we have had words.

Lightuptheroom · 12/08/2020 13:12

DS is approaching this with a 'theres plenty of time' response to anything, probably because his insurance is unconditional so if his firm rejects it's then up to him if he wants to do clearing or not

Sssloou · 12/08/2020 13:18

I didn’t think you could hold a firm and an unconditional together?

Lightuptheroom · 12/08/2020 13:25

You can't put an unconditional as firm and have an insurance as well , you can do it the other way round

Sssloou · 12/08/2020 13:28

Ah good to know.

Divoc2020 · 12/08/2020 13:29

@sandybayley I must admit, I'm keeping an eye on the school parent portal. I wouldn't be surprised if, with everything that's going on, they didn't accidentally upload the A level results early by mistake.
I've set up a change notification alert!

sandybayley · 12/08/2020 13:30

Oh that's an idea. I will go and have a nosy. DS2 seems very certain and it's really not like him to have any faith in his big brother.

MarchingFrogs · 12/08/2020 13:32

I didn’t think you could hold a firm and an unconditional together?

If an offer is unconditional if firmed a d you firm that university, you cannot have an insurance, as it is redundant. If the offer is just uncondituonal - and some universities do this, even pre-results - you can make it your firm with no insurance, or have it as a 'sure bet' I surancechoice.

Re telling a university that has rejected the student that their mock grades were higher than the final grades sent to UCAS and on to the university, one would assume that the first step would be to get the school to instigate an appeal, if it doesn't do that automatically, then tell the university that an appeal is in progress and therefore please will they keep the application under consideration, pending the result.

Universities have already been told that they are expected, wherever possible, to hold a place pending an appeal and this year, the deadline for fulfilling all conditions has been extended by a week, to 7th September.

ShaunaTheSheep · 12/08/2020 13:51

Marking my place ConfusedGin

Sssloou · 12/08/2020 13:53

So does choosing mock results involve an “appeal” process by the school thru exam board/Ofqual rather than just the school emailing the mock results to the uni? Is the “appeal” then just a rubber stamp?

specialted · 12/08/2020 13:56

Thanks for new thread. Just caught up whilst at work but having to stop as it's too distracting.

ThrawnCow · 12/08/2020 14:01

Am terrified having read a PP's account of going through clearing. DS is not engaging. If it comes to it, he'll have to wing it, though he's not the most confident. His first clearing choice did make him an offer though.

StartWhereYouStand · 12/08/2020 14:11

Universities have had the results (moderated results) since Friday I believe.

Schools have them emailed today but only Head and the exams officer are allowed to see them. I believe that the school also tracks Uni offers as they can see them as they get uploaded to UCAS and before the UCAS track site is released for students themselves tomorrow morning.

At my school (secondary teacher) all other staff usually get the results about 30mins/1hour before students - so we may have time to pick out any obvious appeals etc. Last night's 'you can use your mock' announcement will just add an extra column of data into the mix when we are looking for appeals, and at the moment the whole 'valid mock' is slightly undefined Hmm However I can say that there are very, very few students that get a better mock than the CAG that we submitted so I feel that the mock announcement will really only apply for anyone who has been downgraded by more than one grade. So it is supposed to be a fall back for the outliers where the model has massively failed, but for many who have been downgraded from CAG by only a grade they will probably end up with similar to their mock grade even though we as teachers believed there would be upward progression. The problem is the model found it hard to reliably predict which upward progression was fair to keep with a consistent pass rate for the whole qualification.

There was never going to be an easy answer to cancelling exams but changing the goal posts 33hours before results are given out is the worst of any solution possible.

I am crossing everything for all of you and all my students who worked so hard, but I know we will have tears tomorrow.

SnapSnapDragon · 12/08/2020 14:13

DS is being uncharacteristically helpful today. But I think that's because his task involves wielding a large axe, which he's quite enjoying. I might join him..
