Well, it’s been a crazy few days.

Ds needed, and was predicted, AAA but was actually awarded ABC so very pleased Warwick looked beyond what he was given on the day.

Cam77 · 13/08/2020 09:46

Sounds like in some schools they may as well have just got the students to pick three letters out of a hat.

Aragog · 13/08/2020 09:47

Dd is upset. Her grades are lower than her predictions so she's lost her first choice.
Her mocks won't help her as they don't include her coursework grades - 40% and 20% - so a big chunk where she knew she'd picked up lots of marks, but not included. The mock grades were just the papers, and then school just adjusted the predicted grades to take into account the coursework.

She has her insurance offer so she is still going away. Just waiting for their confirmation email so we can apply for halls.

It's frustrating as it's been a horrid year - what with Covid and the exam mess up, missing all her 18th celebrations, no end of school, tragically losing three close family members since April and now this. Just wanted something to go right for her.

But she is a strong girl and she will move on.

Ironically her insurance generally needs higher grades and is ranked higher for her subject than the first choice was - but they changed her offer to unconditional in March.

@mushroom3
Not strictly inner city but DD at a large comp in Zone 4/5 in South London and downgraded massively as well. I think certain sixth forms particularly if they take all abilities and large intakes have been badly affected.

makingmyway10 · 13/08/2020 09:48

DD predicted A,A,A and awarded AA and a B!! First and second choice uni still accepted her for Vet med. But school and DD gutted, school
Going to appeal as she was a solid A in mocks and all her work! DD Just Devastated Really angry on her behalf. The school do not over predict and have a great track record of high grades So totally blindsided! DD gutted as it was a shock and she was not able to access UCAS as it had crashed luckily her Head of Sixth Form had already checked and knew she had got in! It’s a shambles, several A grade friends down graded and gutted none of them borderline either solid A students. It’s ridiculous! .

sunglasses123 · 13/08/2020 09:49

I suspect that the universities have been very flexible on the entry requirements but for us the exam grades were the most important thing as they are on you CV forever. DS did well in his mocks and he was predicted three A*.

I know that its very disappointing if you have a children in a deprived area who were going to do very well. However I would sincerely hope that for those pupils providing the school can prove that that pupil was capable of the grades they should be overturned. If they cannot prove it or were wildly optmistic then sadly the grade should stand.

Aragog · 13/08/2020 09:50

None of her friends from her school got their predicted grades. All got at least 1-2 grades lower. Some have already had emails telling them they'll get their mock grade instead. Others, like Dd, won't benefit from this due to the way school didn't include coursework in the mock exams. It's a very mixed school with lower average grades.

Her friends from her previous school - high attaining independent - all got very close to predicted, and all got above their mock grades. So she is happy for them - her best friend got her grades and first choice, as didn't most of her friends from her old school.

mumsneedwine · 13/08/2020 09:51

@makingmyway10 congratulations on vet place. Mine got hers too. I know it feels horrible now but no one will ever care about that B. Once she's a vet that's all that will matter. Please tell her she's done so so well. Not all vet schools were taking dropped grades so they must really like her.

My dd's subject where she's been downgraded from A-C (best subject and one she wanted to study) had poor results for the last couple of years so they've just done blanket downgrading! It's totally unfair that pupils at large sixth forms are treated differently to small ones.

Aragog · 13/08/2020 09:52

Although it won't change DD's university choice and unlikely to change her grades, Dh would like us to appeal on the basis that her mocks didn't include the coursework elements. As he says, we've nothing to lose by going it.

catnidge · 13/08/2020 09:53

Predicted BBB, got BCD. Pretty gutted. Excellent GCSE results but mental health difficulties throughout sixth form.
Two subjects were performance based and that's counted for nothing!

KingscoteStaff · 13/08/2020 09:54

DS is on the Offer Holders group for his firm and people are posting that they’ve been accepted with a dropped grade - good for people who looked at Track first, a bit hairy for those who got their grades first and couldn’t log in.

TudorChimney · 13/08/2020 09:54

So sorry to hear about the disappointments so many of you are going through. We were lucky, DS into first choice and got A*, A, B. Think that was fairly realistic. UCAS Track was shocking this morning, took ages to get in adding hugely to the stress of it all. I wonder how many mums will be asleep on the sofa by 8 this evening!?

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 13/08/2020 09:55

still waiting for results from school as they've had IT issues (again). But, DDs got into her firm choice (Kent) and turns out that both her firm and insurance changed her offers to unconditional at some point (presumably when Track was closed to applicants last week?) So, even knowing she's got her place, we still have no idea what actual grades she's got!

sunglasses123 · 13/08/2020 09:57

DS got into Track (one of his only friends to do so) and saw that he had got into his Firm but we couldnt access his grades as the school portal was down and no one seemed to have a paper copy!

TheFallenMadonna · 13/08/2020 09:59

Aragog we dont yet know the details of the mock based appeals, as they were a last minute change and Ofqual are not issuing guidance until next week. I would think it is highly likely that a "valid" mock would , or at least could include the NEA element, as that is how the subject is usually assessed. The other students shouldn't be told that their mock grade cou ts, as that will be decided on appeal by the school.

Interesting you say that-both DS’s firm and insurance both say unconditional now. I wonder when that happened? Would it have been today-since the results?
Drumple · 13/08/2020 10:03

Dd got in no bother to her first choice but so so many of her friends haven’t. It’s a real mess

makingmyway10 · 13/08/2020 10:04

@mumsneedeine thank you! Congratulations to your girl too! I am really proud of her just disappointed that the grade is not accurate. We just ordered her a stethoscope as congrats!

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 13/08/2020 10:06

Tears here. DS Predicted BBC gets DDE!! DS is inconsolableSad

HuaShan · 13/08/2020 10:09

DS into firm, moderated in one subject but met his offer. Judging from people we spoke to at school there has been quite heavy moderation

Pieceofpurplesky · 13/08/2020 10:10

It makes my blood boil to hear these stories.

EwwSprouts · 13/08/2020 10:10

Oh Catherine that's terrible. I feel for you both.

oneofthegiantsisme · 13/08/2020 10:12

Huge relief here - DS dropped a couple of grades (needed A*AB, got ABB), but Exeter have taken him anyway. All of his friends got into their first choice, too.

Took about half an hour to get into Track this morning - he'd had his results from school, so was desperate to see if he'd got in or not!

Congratulations to everyone who's happy with where they're going, and good luck to everyone who's appealing or still waiting.

MillicentMartha · 13/08/2020 10:13

Sorry to hear of so many moderated down. Sad
