Thanks EwwSprouts needed that. I am getting quite upset myself.

sunglasses123 · 13/08/2020 10:14

I am wondering - if my child got predicted BBC and those grades are meant to be aspirational and they were given DDE then why not take a gap year and sock it to them next year.

I know its not as easy as it sounds but the DDE might well have been justified or there wasnt proper mocks to fall back on or no strong evidence to back up why that pupil was capable so an appeal wont be strong.

Aragog · 13/08/2020 10:16

Thefallenmadonna

I know one student has definitely had an email to tell him how his grade (U) is lower than his mock (D) means it will automatically be appealed and he will get the higher grade. Only seen top half of email though so don't know if there's a disclaimer.

Anyone calling school are being told that school don't yet know what's happening.

For Dd we don't think it'll make a difference due to the way the mocks were done - we know it was only the paper taken into account and bit the coursework already done or in the middle of) so we will contact school later to say we'd like to appeal if possible on that basis but don't really expect anything to change.

Think we just have to accept it's been a dreadful year all round and this is just one extra thing to add to the list of rubbish events!

Aragog · 13/08/2020 10:18

At least the tears have stopped for a while here.

Just wish the insurance offer would email their confirmation letter as dd would feel happier then, and we could organise halls

mimbleandlittlemy · 13/08/2020 10:18

DS just called his first choice to see if he could go this year instead of taking the planned gap year, but course full. He's very relieved I think, as he did want to do the gap year, it was just C-19 that had changed his plans - so he is at home for another year, which is nice as long as the local leisure centre finally reopens and he gets his job back.

mimbleandlittlemy · 13/08/2020 10:19

Very mixed bag of results from ds's school.

Lightuptheroom · 13/08/2020 10:21

@LittleBearPad, he wasn't overly keen, really put it so that he had something in case the worst happened, now sitting in college ringing uni's so who the hell knows what will happen, no mention at all from school on appealing on basis of mocks because I think their mocks can't be classed as complete exams

Newgirls · 13/08/2020 10:24

Mimble so he has a place for next year? Fab he can now enjoy his gap year!

Oh dear. If he was keen it would be worth just going but not if he isn’t. Lots of luck and I hope he finds his niche.

Twofigures · 13/08/2020 10:36

DS was downgraded in 3 of his 4 subjects and missed his place. School have provided a CAG certificate and uni has asked us to send it in. Fingers crossed it’ll be enough. He’s gone back to bed!

surreygoldfish · 13/08/2020 10:42

What a nightmare. DS hoping for A*AA got AAB Exeter still accepted thankfully. V high performing independent school. Sigh

hellsbellswithcherryontop · 13/08/2020 10:43

Well dc has not got points for gov finance(isle of man-still have grants but have to get a minimum no of ucas points to get it) so unless they're lenient this year she won't be going as we don't have a spare £15-20000 even though she has an unconditional place.Don't know what the uni will expect us to pay if she drops out now.

DuckyMcDuck · 13/08/2020 10:43

Does anyone know what the procedure is re appealing if a grade is lower than his mock? DS forgot to ask!

Tingalingle · 13/08/2020 10:43

Mix of happy and a bit deflated here, as DD hadn't applied to university yet so didn't have anything immediately riding on the results. One grade has gone up on expectations, one down. But I'm so sorry to hear of these real shocks for some students.

Springersrock · 13/08/2020 10:48

My DD was predicted Distiction (BTEC) B, B

Got Merit, E, E

In her mocks she got solid and C and B so school are appealing the 2 A level grades. She’s happy with the merit for the BTECH.

She got a unconditional offer about a week before lockdown which was then put on hold so she’s been panicking that it would have been withdrawn but she’s been accepted at her first choice Uni

That’s a huge mark down though

A couple of her friends have gone from solid Cs in mocks to U grades

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 13/08/2020 10:50

CAGs of AAA moderated down to BBC which is very annoying, don't know yet about an appeal

NetballHoop · 13/08/2020 10:51

Predicted AAA got AAB with the B in the subject predicted as A. Will appeal even though uni have accepted her.

LouisBalfour · 13/08/2020 10:52

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate That’s shocking! Are you going to appeal?

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 13/08/2020 10:52

So sorry TheGoatIsHereFlowers I'm sure a way forward will emerge though

Gettingthroughtheweek · 13/08/2020 10:56

So sorry to read of the disappointments. It’s been a really rubbish year. I can only offer the consolation that DS missed his first choice Uni last year through 0.3% on one subject, and was in pieces this time last year, but picked himself up and has been having a good time and enjoying his studies at his insurance; that didn’t even feel a possibility this time last year but it’s worked out well.

He still resents OfQual for raising the boundaries and I’m sure DC here will retain the deep sense of injustice they feel today, that their marks don’t reflect their abilities and potential; they’ve been dealt a bad hand. Let’s hope we can use the anger to improve the way things are run in the future.

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 13/08/2020 11:07

LouisBalfour Most definitely we will be appealing, although it seems you cannot do so as an individual but through the school who are not picking up all right now. Not even a messaging system in place.

mimbleandlittlemy · 13/08/2020 11:08

Newgirls, yes, gap year agogo. I think he is thrilled as he really hadn't wanted to go this year so he has gone through the motions and doesn't have to think about it any more!

Cafeconleche · 13/08/2020 11:09

Thanks so much @Peaseblossom22. School are appealing his A which was downgraded from an A. He scored over 95% in his last set of mocks, was top of his class and was one of their star students in that subject (large inner city SFC). Almost all his friends have had one or more subjects dropped by at least a grade. An utter fucking shambles and a lot of broken kids (and staff) The college regularly get students into Oxbridge, so are used to having outliers within an intake of 750 per year. But anyway, he’s really happy with his insurance and, even if his grade is revised to an A, he’s happy to be able to move on with the next stage of his life. Flowers to all the DC (and parents) out there who have been shafted by this utter mess of a year

Gymntonic · 13/08/2020 11:10

No flexibility from Birmingham university here. Needed ABB got ABC. Rejected. Phoned them but no joy. I think they've over offered and maybe holding places for appeal. Who knows. Considering insurance place still but her hearts not in it.
FE college here in area of social deprivation. one or two exceptions but many downgraded
