Confirmation of first years accommodation

My dc has been waiting to hear about her accommodation from Goldsmiths since May, this was then put back to June, then the beginning of July and then mid July - we're now nearing the end of July and have still not heard anything.

Are other unis taking this long? I appreciate the covid situation is having an impact, but the communication has not been good and this is making dc very anxious about how the whole experience at this particular uni will be. It's not been a good first impression!

If we know that lots of other uni's are experiencing similar delays then this will be some comfort.'

At DS's firm choice, the system to submit preferences for accommodation will be open between 17 and 30 August.

For his insurance choice, he has submitted his preferences but they don't allocate accommodation until after results day.

So for either place, he won't find out his accommodation allocation until September.

Yes we have applied for accom at both firm and insurance but don't expect to hear for definite until the place is confirmed at one or the other.

ShaunaTheSheep · 22/07/2020 21:55

What are you expecting to hear about the accommodation pre results day?

DS was able to apply at his firm but not his insurance. If he get into the firm, the accommodation will be confirmed within a week or so I believe.

We're expecting to hear whether she has a place at one of the halls she applied for - we're only expecting this because the uni said they would confirm (and subsequently have kept shifting the date back).

She has friends who have had their accommodation confirmed at other universities, so it's just getting her down that she's not heard yet (and I'm a bit worried as private halls/accommodation in London aren't the cheapest).

We'll just sit tight - I was just curious if many others had heard back about their situations. It will reassure my dd to know that it's common practice to allocate places after results day.

Ours has been delayed as they are trying to group students on the same course in the same flat so creating a bubble.

DD4 was asked to select rooms yesterday, but allocation will be after results are in/ all qualifications are met.

Houseplantmad · 23/07/2020 09:13

DS has just found out he and most of the other first years he knows haven't been given accommodation. The uni sent out an email by mistake which shows they're allocating it to international students, presumably to entice them back. I'm really not happy as it was one of of the reasons he choose the uni.

Houseplantmad · 23/07/2020 09:14

Previously they said they were delayed allocating it as they were trying to plan safe accommodation etc. Now it seems they never intended to offer any first years any rooms.

Ironoaks · 23/07/2020 09:58

@Houseplantmad - not having enough accommodation to house any of their home (UK) students is not good. And they should be giving them enough notice to find private accommodation, rather than finding out in an email intended for a different group of students. Would you be comfortable naming the university?

torydeathdrug · 23/07/2020 10:13

Dd has been told that those with unconditional offers should be allocated & hear from them in July. We’re not holding our breath ... the university concerned have been dreadful wrt communication & deadlines.
