Hopefully as the title suggests we will actually get up to results on this thread! Only 5 weeks to go.

@Railingsohno, I could not see the joint honours course at Liverpool on the discoveruni website although it is in Clearing, but for Ancient History 35% of entrants had 112-127 UCAS points, 5% had less. 120 points is BBB, BBC is 108.

See discoveruni.gov.uk/course-details/10006842/BA_ANHI/Full-time/

Bristol also in Clearing and 10% had UCAS points 112-127 for Ancient History, 5% less. Bristol has a very long list of "aspiring schools" eligible for lower entry requirements as they are tackling the diversity mix, if your DS fancies Bristol and is at a non-selective state school, look at www.bristol.ac.uk/media-library/sites/study/documents/aspiring-schools-2021.pdf.

I don't know how you choose a university for the subjects which are taught in so many places, narrowing down is much easier for medicine!

MillicentMartha · 18/07/2020 11:23

@BackforGood

It's so difficult, isn't it? So much "what if" or "I think that..." or "I presume" ..... It is just such a strange year. We seem to have gone from 'nobody will want to go this year so those of our dc will be able to get into courses asking for better grades than we anticipated' to the last I've heard which is 'applications for places is up 29 000 over last year so our dc are not likely to get aspirational places' Of course, all without our dc being able to do anything to influence or improve their grade. I feel drained, and I'm "only" the parent, not the 18 yr old trying to figure all this out.
Plenty of UCAS applicants this year. Some international candidates apply directly, though and they seem to be the ones who are lacking. Universities can only take up to 5% extra over their planned numbers to compensate for loss of internationals but it’s still a low birth rate year, as was last year, so the competition for places may be less challenging wrt grades even if not in numbers. Some may choose to defer once they have their results which may add to clearing, if they are concerned about the whole uni experience being spoilt. Conversely others may decide that gap years aren’t worth it during a time of few jobs and possibly restricted travel.

It’s all guesswork, though, as you say. Confused

Do you remember those Yes/No decision trees that helped you decide which member of Take That you should be dating? That’s what DS is constructing.

MillicentMartha · 18/07/2020 11:30

Kingscote, you are a mere babe! For me it would have been which member of Duran Duran! Grin

@Monkey2001 that’s helpful thank you! His heart is in Liverpool, he just loved it there but was talked out of applying as too aspirational and to be honest we’d both had enough of UCAS by then! The idea was if grades were better then he could apply with actual grades. He’s very one track on History so has only really started to do well this year and since he’s had an electronic reader.

Railingsohno · 18/07/2020 11:35

That is too funny.Grin I was a Wham girl myself and was all about George WinkGrin💗
Railingsohno · 18/07/2020 11:36

@MillicentMartha yes it could go either way! Also the resit option thrown in to confuse further!

Railingsohno · 18/07/2020 11:37

God it’s good to talk about it. It really is stressful. Feel almost a bit tearful. Thanks everyone Flowers

MillicentMartha · 18/07/2020 11:55

@Railingsohno, Mumsnet is great for finding slightly over invested like-minded parents. Wink I have the advantage Hmm of having a DS who wants to study maths and a gap year really isn’t advised. Just as well because a) I’m a divorced single parent and can’t afford to subsidise him, b) he’s a bit on the spectrum and wouldn’t enjoy Freshers’ week and partying anyway, and c) he really needs to find some better friends and is hoping uni might have a bigger pool of nerds to mix with.

I’m an Adam Ant girl, myself! Grin

but yes, it would be Wham and George for me too Wink

specialted · 18/07/2020 16:39

Definitely wham and george for me too!

stoneysongs · 18/07/2020 16:44

Same here - couldn't believe it when George turned out to be gay Grin

Hoghgyni · 18/07/2020 17:53

The highlight of 2019 for me was a night with Tears for Fears and then A-ha a few months later at the Royal Albert Hall.

DadDadDad · 18/07/2020 18:18

Hoghgyni - I hope you are talking about a concert (or are those band-member dating decision trees others have been discussing a path to something a bit more serious? Shock ).

MillicentMartha · 18/07/2020 19:07

Hogh I never took you for that sort of groupie! ShockWink

Now THAT was someone in my class at school after Terence Trent D'Arby played the Cornwall Colliseum in 1985...

sandybayley · 18/07/2020 22:20

I seem to remember there was a thread a while back where a huge number of posters claimed to have slept with Mick Hucknall. Really not my type but quite a lothario!

Shimy · 18/07/2020 22:35

Did anyone fancy Shakin Stevens? Ooh! The memory of that wobbly leg still makes go all unnecessary.

Snozzlemaid · 18/07/2020 22:58

Oh my. I was at that concert. We were right up the front. Didn't hear that story though.
Hoghgyni · 19/07/2020 08:18

Snozzlemaid shenanigans at the Porth Avallen I believe.

thesunwillout · 19/07/2020 09:11

Cornwall Colleseum I hear?

The Smiths for me 1986.

Crush wise Sting.

Such a knob tho 😆

spababe · 19/07/2020 09:34

My DC is supremely confident that he will get into his first choice of Uni. As an added pressure, his GF wants to go to the same Uni and has a much lower offer so should get in easily. The Uni is excellent for both subjects they have chosen so it's not a case of just wanting to be with her. I hear him talking to mates online as if he is in and going. He has to get high grades - exactly what he was predicted on the UCAS form. I hope to God he gets in. Have your DCs got their heart set on one place or are they more flexible?

tinkywinkyshandbag · 19/07/2020 10:26

@Shimy are you me??? I was a massive Shaky fan, went to see him at Sheffield City Hall circa 1983, I loved him so much. I did later move onto the Smiths, Cure etc but Shaky was a big part of my early teens.

tinkywinkyshandbag · 19/07/2020 10:28

@spababe my DD has her heart set on Durham but it's a high offer and I'm nervous she won't get in and how she feel. She's not had a great couple of years and I really hope she does as it will give her an enormous boost. If not...Leeds is her insurance but it's not exactly a low offer there either!

Hoghgyni · 19/07/2020 11:02

I went down to Crinnis last week thesun and pretended to be Alison Moyet spinning around to Is This Love. Many a happy day spent at the Radio 1 Roadshow with chips from the Wimpy.
