Hopefully as the title suggests we will actually get up to results on this thread! Only 5 weeks to go.

You have to watch Sheldon using it! Grin

Wow, just ordered one, thanks for the tip. If DS1 does not appreciate it, I am sure DS2 (bit more OCD) will. Grin

Sheldon in action

Just showed that to son (with ocd!)who thought it was brilliant! May have to get one now!

TheDrsDocMartens · 14/07/2020 12:32

What’s the thing for storing T-shirt’s?

Monkey2001 · 14/07/2020 14:09

Haha, yes, but Lakeland appear to have discontinued it in spite of great reviews. Could be a patent thing.

Now, I can see my ds loving that as he wears shirts all the time

Has anybody got specific advice about mattress toppers? They range from things which look like mattress protectors to very substantial almost mattresses. We went to Ikea yesterday but just came away with cooking utensils, plants, tea towels and surge protected extension sockets. The mattress toppers which seem to be for students (come in small double size) was not properly on display and seemed expensive for what it was (single Talgje - £40)

Any recommendations?

suze28 · 14/07/2020 15:04

I've been looking at the ones from Dunelm as DD1 has a 4ft bed and it's a less popular bed size. I initially confused toppers with protectors, they definitely need a topper to get the comfort.

JulesJules · 14/07/2020 15:29

I got this one from John Lewis £35 for a single www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-partners-synthetic-soft-and-light-mattress-topper/p3046029
At the moment they have also got one on special offer www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-partners-synthetic-basic-mattress-topper/p4909761 which is £25 for a single

Divoc2020 · 14/07/2020 15:51

DS1 got a topper from Argos - think it was a Silentnight one. He says it was great.

Re mattress toppers. Do students who have to move out during Christmas and Easter breaks still get things like a mattress topper (and that nifty t-shirt stacker)? Or do they have to balance essentials vs the hassle of dragging things back and forth. On that note, is there a chance they won't have to vacate for Christmas break, as I can't see many conferences and events taking place in 2020?

MillicentMartha · 14/07/2020 16:25

Toppers not protectors. The uni normally supplies a mattress protector to keep the mattresses clean.

@FingernailNibbler, contracts are usually for 40 odd weeks to include Christmas and Easter breaks, so they can leave most stuff in their rooms. DS1 had a 34 week contact in first year at Warwick, so could leave stuff at Christmas but not Easter. I fetched his mattress topper home a week early and apparently he had a horrible week’s sleep without it! Grin I’d check the uni accommodation pages, the length of the contracts are usually specified.

Also, wait to find out what size bed they have. DS1 had a single, which was easy to get a topper for. Lots of halls do a small double, which is 4’ and an absolute pain to get a topper for (and fitted sheets, though Dunelm do some.) I’d be tempted to get a normal 4’6” topper in that case with a 3” overhang on each side and get normal double sized fitted sheets to go over the topper.

@FingernailNibbler - soemtimes they are allowed to leave stuff in a locked cupboard e.g. the one above a wardrobe for example. Or, as in DS's case, they find a friend whose room isn't being let out and leave all their stuff there!

BackforGood · 14/07/2020 19:21

I honestly would leave things like a mattress topper until they see what their bed is like.
I've had 2 x dc already go, + several nieces, nephews and none of them have ever had, or needed mattress toppers - they are genuinely a thing I've only read about on MN. University accommodation is proper posh in some places, but even where is isn't - like for my ds - he didn't need that.
I'd give them an Argos gift card or even a promise not and say you'll get one delivered if they need it, and not assume they will.

MillicentMartha · 14/07/2020 20:21

You may well be right, BackforGood. DS1’s uni accommodation was at the cheaper end of cheap and his mattress was very thin!

Monkey2001 · 14/07/2020 21:55

At St Andrews I think we are supposed to at least put a mattress protector on, and you may as well get a topper. As somebody said a while ago it puts more than a sheet between DC and all the action that happens in student beds!

Monkey2001 · 15/07/2020 12:13

Thanks for the topper tips. DS and GF were bemused by the idea that the t-shirt folding thing could be worth taking - DS said that is how Mumsnet DCs will be spotted......

Can’t believe it is 4 weeks today that they get their grades.

DD is another one who isn’t keen to buy anything until she has the accommodation sorted. I have got her a couple of bowls and plates.

DuckyMcDuck · 16/07/2020 22:02

I had my first anxiety dream about results day last night Blush. DS, on the other hand, seems very laid back - apart from the fact no-one is allowed to mention A'Levels, University or 13th August Grin
