Hopefully as the title suggests we will actually get up to results on this thread! Only 5 weeks to go.

Thank you ShaunaTheSheep. My DS is hoping to go to Durham, he says there are no phone numbers on their website (only a webform) and they have nothing in Clearing! He has no insurance lined up Confused Hmm

I will be having a large Brew and even larger Cake on Thursday whatever the outcome. Fingers crossed that your DS gets what he needs (where is he hoping to go? Don't say if you don't want to).

Peaseblossom22 · 11/08/2020 14:11

@NotEnoughTime Durham here too , ds very happy with his insurance as well But difference only one grade . Cannot really seem to get him to engage at all I need to try to pin him down this evening but after 5 mins he just walks off 🙁

MillicentMartha · 11/08/2020 14:18

@NotEnoughTime this page might be helpful!

www.dur.ac.uk/about/location/contacts/

It’s got lots of phone numbers listed.

MillicentMartha · 11/08/2020 14:20

Though only a web form for admissions, as your DS said.

I put this on the thread about clearing - there is an app, just called Clearing, that D1 said was recommended on one of those student YouTube channels. No idea how good it is, but says you just put in your grades and you can then scroll through available courses. It has all the phone numbers on it, so would save having to look those up.
Maybe worth a look.

NotEnoughTime · 11/08/2020 14:41

Peaseblossom22 Well, fingers crossed for Durham for your DS too on Thursday or 'at least' his insurance choice.

Thank you so much MillicentMartha I'll tell DS to take another look.

It's all getting very too real now Shock

mimbleandlittlemy · 11/08/2020 14:44

I have just been fossicking about online, and all the unis ds applied to have an alert system for Clearing news from them for students to sign up to. Ds at the gym at the moment, but I will try and get him to sign up to them, possibly by sign language as we have that agreed moratorium on discussion, then at least he will know what’s there if he hits the nuclear button and goes this year instead.

Bouledeneige · 11/08/2020 15:30

SOS Outland have reverted to teachers assessments!

Out of interest if you wanted to call the first/firm choice if they don't get in automatically would you ring the Clearing tel number as it's not strictly clearing/a new enquiry?

MillicentMartha · 11/08/2020 15:30

Bloody hell, Scotland, what are you playing at? If every student gets their CAG, those from realistic schools suffer, there is massive grade inflation making the results worthless. I really hope England don’t do the same.

OP posts:
Daisyway · 11/08/2020 15:33

Scotland understands this is an unusual year requiring exceptional circumstances. Sorry Op, If England don't do the same it will be grossly unfair.

MillicentMartha · 11/08/2020 15:38

If England do the same, the higher tier universities will be full to bursting and the lower tier ones will go bust. It’s appalling. No-one will ever value these results if they give them out like smarties.

OP posts:
MillicentMartha · 11/08/2020 15:40

Grossly unfair to those from realistic schools, certainly.

OP posts:
MillicentMartha · 11/08/2020 15:41

If England do follow suit, that is.

OP posts:
offandaway · 11/08/2020 15:47

Well looks like this years cohort will all be getting their predicted grades then. Can’t see England getting away with not doing the same. I agree top unis will be full to the rafters. I wonder what Cambridge will do, as it over-offers by 30% on average. How will they deal with 30% more students?

AChickenCalledDaal · 11/08/2020 15:47

I'm so glad I don't work for Ofqual right now. Can you imagine them watching the Scottish news and sensing the tidal wave of expectation that they will follow suit in less that 48 hours time ...

hobbema · 11/08/2020 15:54

Just wow... seem to recall a questionnaire a while ago asking if it came to it would DD consider deferring. Maybe successful candidates will be asked if they’d consider it.
I cannot see how it can stand to have a cohort in one part of the country graded by teachers with what looks to be about a 10% plus grade inflation and not in the rest?

DadDadDad · 11/08/2020 15:55

Well, @ClarasZoo, you were right. My apologies for thinking they would do something a bit more measured. Confused

What a mess. Great relief for those who were downgraded, but it does create another unfairness, benefiting schools that were generous (even if they didn't do so intentionally). Also, I wonder how 2019 and 2021 exam-takers will feel in years to come?

MillicentMartha · 11/08/2020 15:58

It’s a shit show, certainly.

OP posts:
MillicentMartha · 11/08/2020 16:06

OK, new thread title, ‘Results- Let’s get this shit show on the road!’

What do you think? Grin

OP posts:
offandaway · 11/08/2020 16:07

I have a year 12 ddd and they are going to have to sit exams next summer by the look of it, even though there is massive inequality in that some have have missed a whole term’s teaching (20% of teaching time for A-level) and likely to face further disruption / local lockdowns etc going forward.

Personally, I don’t mind if the grades will be massively inflated this year. Good for them. And from a selfish point of view, I’m glad they won’t need to do the exams for guaranteed deferrals for Cambridge - they’ll just all get in for this year anyway, with the predicted grades they applied with. So it looks like it will be a bulge year, but I’m sure Cambridge have the funds to deal with what could be an extra 30% intake.

I do worry about the impact on some other unis though.

I do wish my younger one who is dyslexic and facing exams next year and who had really struggled with home school and really struggles under timed conditions was in this cohort though!

suze28 · 11/08/2020 16:08

Yes, I like the new thread title. Who thought that we'd need a new one so close to results when it was looking fine a few weeks ago.
I'm even more confused now by the whole results thing and this afternoon's revelations.

specialted · 11/08/2020 16:09

My head is spinning with all this! All happening so fast, I'm not sure what I feel about it all tbh!

suze28 · 11/08/2020 16:09

@specialted Yes! Agreed.

Monkey2001 · 11/08/2020 16:14

I don't think you can assume that England will follow suit. Most Scottish students go to university in Scotland (because it is free) and the Scottish universities have separate targets for Scottish/EU students and Rest of UK (RUK). England did not follow Scotland with no student fees.

I looked at the Advanced Higher stats and the fail rate was halved in the awarded grades, presumably now almost everybody will pass, and the lowest pass in a Higher is equivalent in UCAS points terms to a C at A level.

Giving CAGs this year would de-value the grades and, as @DadDadDad said, create a different sort of unfairness. Changing the rules during a process is not good. I am not saying the algorithm is good (we don't know yet), just that de-valuing the grades this year and giving the most competitive universities an over-recruitment problem is not a good solution.

mumonthehill · 11/08/2020 16:14

Beginning to feel slightly sick with it all! dS college doing drive through collection, so very useful for those who do not get what they need!
