Hopefully as the title suggests we will actually get up to results on this thread! Only 5 weeks to go.

DS had deferred to 2021 but is now waivering. He doesn't want to do the 'resits' and every uni he looked at on open days is in Clearing bar his Firm (at the moment - they might be in next week, who knows?), so he is seriously considering going this year now depending on tariff points etc etc. This time next week I hope at least he'll have some sort of clarification because I think both our heads are now fried with talking it round and round and round.

Ironoaks · 06/08/2020 16:10

@MillicentMartha that sounds like the sort of dream I would have. Particularly love the colour-coding.

MillicentMartha · 06/08/2020 16:17

It’s tricky to know what’s for the best. I’m glad that it’s not recommended to take a gap year for maths, that decision taken out of our hands.

DS doing Modern Languages where it is recommended, but the likelihood of being able to travel to both his ML countries is now remote. I do feel for them.

I'm still really impressed your dream ran to full colour coding, Millicent.

MillicentMartha · 06/08/2020 17:09

I know! My subconscious is obviously more organised than I am! I’m going to take it as an omen. Grin

That colour coding is my worst nightmare!

Two years ago our Sixth Form decided it was a good idea to 'colour code' the results envelopes with a small red, amber or green dot on the corner.
Green= got into first choice uni
Amber = missed first/ got into second choice / may want to remark etc
Red = Missed offers - needs advice/ go into Clearing

Of course the kids sussed it straight away and the parents were outraged!

SeasonFinale · 06/08/2020 18:08

We use that traffic light system at our school but nowhere publicly to the student or parents. Nowadays it would be a GDPR breach!

Divoc2020 · 06/08/2020 18:10

@SeasonFinale - Yes, well that was the issue! Coloured dots in plain view for everyone to see! Not good.

JufusMum · 06/08/2020 20:54

I can’t even think about results as DD takes driving test number four tomorrow. She’s told me she can’t get excited about uni if she doesn’t have a license. I feel sick.

mumsneedwine · 06/08/2020 21:07

@JufusMum tell her to stick her instructor in the back. Seems to help them pass after a few goes.

suze28 · 06/08/2020 21:16

@JufusMum oh bless her, really hope she passes.

JufusMum · 06/08/2020 22:02

@mumsneedwine they aren’t allowing that during Covid

Newgirls · 06/08/2020 22:18

Hope it goes her way 👍👍👍👍 else perhaps she can take it in her uni town so not too long to wait

mumsneedwine · 06/08/2020 22:20

@JufusMum I hadn't thought of that 😟. Best of luck for tomorrow 🤞

Reading the reports of the new ‘rules’ at Bristol and seriously wondering if we should be advising ds to at least try for a deferral assuming he’s gets the grades. It sounds more like prison than university and given the horrendous cost . The idea that you could be fined up to £800 for mixing with someone not in your flat?

Ds is completely head in the sand about the whole thing . He has had enough of being at home blah blah but I really don’t think he has grasped the reality . No drama, no music , very little sport and in his case maybe three hours a week of actual contact time, even the libraries at some units are going to be appointment only .

What fresh hell is this , as they say

ShalomJackie · 07/08/2020 08:35

Reading that Peaseblossom I am glad DS deferred his Bristol offer prior to the 23 July cut off date!

mumsneedwine · 07/08/2020 08:49

@Peaseblossom22 can you let me know where you read that. DD has only had a lovely email outlining freshers events and when her course starts. They have not given actual hours (although her course has a large practical element so might be different). And I know some Notts vets are already back and they are having lots of contact. Has Bristol said this or general press ? Thanks.

Admittedly not the most erudite of sources.

Peaseblossom22 · 07/08/2020 09:10

The stuff about drama and sports has come from a variety of people from different universities who are currently here at home . One colleague with a dc at St Andrews ( one of ds choices) has said they have been told there will be no choir or drama for the foreseeable future .

mumsneedwine · 07/08/2020 09:24

@Peaseblossom22 thank you. I'm a bit reassured as the Tab is not known for its accuracy 😂. But things will be different - at the start. 2 things said by DD and friends. 1 what else would you do as can't travel and DD has worked all through the last few months so has lots of money. And 2, if a vaccine is found before Xmas them things will be back to the old normal in the new year. Fingers crossed 🤞

Hoghgyni · 07/08/2020 09:42

The choir and drama thing makes sense as even professionals can't do those. It would be very peculiar if AmDram could start but theatres have to remain shut.

Parents across the country are breathing a sigh of relief at the "no one night stands" guidelines!

Bouledeneige · 07/08/2020 09:45

Yes year's out are not recommended for Maths. My DS is already so de-conditioned academically that another year and I think his brain wouldn't be functioning. I'm also not sure what on earth he would do. Jobs are in short supply and foreign travel risky - I wouldn't want him stuck abroad during a second wave.

Bouledeneige · 07/08/2020 09:47

Whatever happens I think its important to bag good places this year when its a buyers market.

TheDrsDocMartens · 07/08/2020 10:15

Lost you all!

Getting very nervous about it all now. It’s not about the results as much as getting accepted by the uni. [I] Don’t want the insurance choice now but there’s a limit of places doing this course.

Plus DC1s year abroad is at risk too.

Very stressful trying to get them sorted.
