Hopefully as the title suggests we will actually get up to results on this thread! Only 5 weeks to go.

I was in our local High Street yesterday, and it occurred to me that, for the first time in 20 years, I won't have to be doing the stressful visit to the school shoe shop in the last week in August Grin

HesMyLobster · 22/07/2020 23:45

DD's school is doing results by email only, they've said "from" 8:30am.
I hope they send them all at the same time as DD's group of 7 are all assembling here so they can "open" them together.

Won't feel quite the same clutching phones and laptops instead of the ubiquitous brown envelopes!

JufusMum · 23/07/2020 06:25

Lobster I’m with you . DD is the same - email only it seems such a shame x

ShalomJackie · 23/07/2020 06:43

We have never had a brown envelope day. All 3 DC at 3 different schools have always had gcse and A level results delivered electronically anyway.

Oratory1 · 23/07/2020 08:14

None of DS four choices were in clearing last year (CS) but they’re all there this year, at the moment anyway, which is interesting.

Millicent, he won’t be looking at clearing, otherwise I would be tempted to look (using the excuse I need to be prepared). If he drops grades which is quite likely on moderation his decision will be whether to go in 2020, assuming his firm accept a dropped grade for sept 2020 entry, or take a gap year and risk resitting and reapplying. I don’t think there will be a desperate rush or urgency to make that choice although I may be wrong.

Oratory1 · 23/07/2020 08:18

Landmark day indeed, DS is my third so it will feel strange come September not to be digging around for the school stuff.

MillicentMartha · 23/07/2020 12:10

Snap, Oratory. DS3 is my youngest so now I have none left in school after 18 years! End of an era. I work in a school, though, so still tied to the school holidays.

DS3 will already know his results before picking them up at school. It will be nice for him to see a few of his friends (who are in his quarter of the alphabet!)

One of DD's choices was in clearing last week and now isn't! What does that mean? All extra places gone already?! Shock

Divoc2020 · 23/07/2020 12:54

@HesMyLobster

Perhaps they have revised their numbers based on the news that grades will be 2% higher?

I've always felt it's grossly unfair that IB and Scottish Highers (?) have a chance at clearing before A levels are announced.

MillicentMartha · 23/07/2020 13:00

@HesMyLobster Clearing is a dynamic situation, places can be filled now by those applying late or with IB results etc, but more may well be generated when universities know A level results, which is almost a week before we do.

Clearing is different for Scottish students as there are very few spaces available in clearing in Scotland for Scottish students unless you are contextual (St A never, Edinburgh and Glasgow an odd course e.g Divinity). However agree Scottish students who wish to study in the RUK have a week or so headstart. It was common in my day to study in England but not so much now. DD looked at UCL but standard offer for her subject was too high (she would have had to get above an Astar equivalence for one subject and Astar for another).

bpisok · 23/07/2020 13:45

Millicent- a week before?!?!
So if they drop a grade the Unis get a week to decide if they are taking them. They then 'finalise' clearing for results day.
The school then gets the results 24 hours before the students.

...how does that square with Durham? . Lots of gripes about Durham making them wait for ages if they missed their offer before finally rejecting them-by which time all the best places in clearing have gone

MillicentMartha · 23/07/2020 14:10

I think they get them on the Sunday or Monday beforehand. Any uni admissions people on here can confirm?

OP posts:
ShalomJackie · 23/07/2020 14:37

They get them at least the weekend before and some before that.

Durham will wait to see if people want to use adjustment ie. those who get better grades before confirming to those with dropped grades. Or will wait to see which Oxbridge offer holders are dropped too as many will have Durham as their insurance.

Monkey2001 · 23/07/2020 14:51

Don't look at this if you are feeling very anxious about the OFQUAL process this year. I don't want to be a scare-monger, but there is going to have to be a fair bit of moderation required if they want to avoid grade inflation.

People who follow the OFQUAL statistical process may be interested in looking at the slide of an OFQUAL symposium which they have published - www.gov.uk/government/publications/awarding-qualifications-in-summer-2020 "Summer Symposium 2020 slide pack".

Of particular interest is this table which shows that the proposed CAGs would see 13.8% of candidates getting A* compared to 7.8% last year, 37.8% A compared to 25.5% last year. GCSEs less of a problem at the top end as CAGs for 7-9 are 31.6 compared to 24.7 last year and they have said that they will also an extra 2%, although the CAGs have 82.4% of people getting 4-9 compared to 72.7% last year

MillicentMartha · 23/07/2020 16:14

Yes, I’ve just tried to explain this on another thread.

OP posts:
MillicentMartha · 23/07/2020 16:17

So there will be quite a lot of moderation down. But that’s because schools have over estimated grades by that much compared to previous yearS. As they moderate schools individually, at least more realistic schools won’t be impacted by the optimistic ones.

Just went off to read stuff on the link from Monkey. Do I read correctly that results are embargoed til 8am this year rather than 6am? In which case ds's school will be breaking the embargo as first class is in at 7.30 for their results, with ds's class last in at 9.15.

spababe · 23/07/2020 18:14

@Lipsofchicken We're in a very very similar position to you - A*AA for MEng at a certain Uni. However my DS has 'forgotton' what he got in mocks Confused

spababe · 23/07/2020 18:16

If you are collecting A level results in person, please try to go in with your DC if they let you and if the school lets you. My eldest son and I spent ages with a girl he vaguely knew on a previous results day who was very upset not to have got the results she needed and had no parent with her at all. The school had some support on hand but it was a huge 6th form and it took a while to source that support.

SeasonFinale · 23/07/2020 18:27

Remember on that graph the top lines are cumulative figures Monkey

mimbleandlittlemy · 23/07/2020 20:29

spababe, I am afraid that not in a million years would ds let me go in. He has picked up all results alone since he took his first GCSE in y9. Not even allowed to sit in the car park...

Lightuptheroom · 23/07/2020 21:01

DS school have made it clear that parents are not permitted and that parents definitely should not be waiting or meeting others in the car park

Hoghgyni · 23/07/2020 21:14

Email only here as there are too many students too widely dispersed to collect in person. I had booked a day off last year, but I was persuaded to change my day off when lockdown struck and Gavin Williamson announced that A level results would be released at the end of July. I'm actually working with people on the other side of the world on 13th and I'm not sure they will completely understand if I am distracted.

BackforGood · 23/07/2020 21:59

I would agree with you in previous years @spababe but we have very clear and specific instructions that we won't be allowed in this year.

I will still be going to the school with dd, and loitering in the car in case things don't go as she hopes. They are big decisions to make without someone to bounce off.
