Hopefully as the title suggests we will actually get up to results on this thread! Only 5 weeks to go.

DS also wants Warwick and needs A*AA so I'm feeling anxious too!

Are there places on the Engineering degree in Clearing @Lipsofchicken?

If there are, you could be ready to contact them as early as possible on the day if need be.

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 20/07/2020 18:16

DD2 missed her offer for MSci, but was automatically offered the BSc as she'd made the grades for that - it's definitely worth ringing them if it's a near miss I'd say. There's always the option of transferring to the Masters after Y2/Y3 (depending on when the courses split) if your 1st/2nd year grades meet their internal requirements - DD1 did that after 2nd year, and DD2 did after 3rd year (so got her MSci in the end after all Grin)

errorofjudgement · 20/07/2020 19:15

@Lipsofchicken - if he can get AAB he would probably be ok for the BEng. DS graduated a couple of years ago but had friends with AAB in BEng who then transferred to MEng at the end of first year (at Warwick)

Lipsofchicken · 20/07/2020 19:27

Thank you everyone for your responses, much appreciated.
We’ll be overjoyed if he gets onto the BEng, as some of you have said, it’s a foot in the door isn’t it.
Do you think Warwick will change the offer at their end, when they Go through their consideration of everyone’s final grades?

Monkey2001 · 20/07/2020 20:09

@Lipsofchicken both courses are in Clearing.

If you look at DiscoverUni (formerly Unistats), it looks like the majority of starters on both courses had more than 144 UCAS points, so AAA plus, but 8% on the M.Eng and 20% on the B.Eng had 128-143 points, which is AAB. People tend to have fewer points now as most do not take a 4th subject to AS level any more. Given that this is a dip year and there may be more people than usual deciding to defer or re-apply next year, it does not look hopeless with AAB, particularly if the AA are Maths and Physics.

Monkey2001 · 20/07/2020 20:16

I am so glad DS applied from a gap year, the uncertainty facing your DC is dreadful. I think the schools should be allowed to release the predictions, with caveats that they may change, so people could manage their expectations - they are going to have to release them from 13th Aug to anyone who asks anyway.

Eve · 20/07/2020 22:07

Another waiting parent here.

If DS2 gets his grades he will be going to same uni as DS1 who will be his final year there. Wasn’t meant to happen to have both there at same time but plans for gap year abandoned.

MillicentMartha · 20/07/2020 22:23

An expensive year for you, @Eve!

goodbyestranger · 20/07/2020 22:30

Monkey in previous years Y13s knew nothing until results day - why should this year be different?

goodbyestranger · 20/07/2020 22:32

And that speaking as the parent of a Y13 - who's completely ok about waiting until the scheduled results day, as are all of her friends.

goodbyestranger · 20/07/2020 22:32

Oops another typo - apols.

Eve · 20/07/2020 22:38

@MillicentMartha I know - rent for 2! Would be nearly cheaper to buy a house!

Student rental is such a rip off - but supply vs demand I suppose! DS2 last year paid £5k for his room - there were 6 of them in the house! That’s £30k a year in rent and next to no maintenance being done.

Monkey2001 · 20/07/2020 22:55

@goodbyestranger it is not a normal year. In a normal year they would have worked for summer exams and had a feel for how they did when they came out of the exam. This year they don't know how much things other than mocks will count and have lost all control.

I am sure your DD will be fine as she goes to a high performing grammar which will have plenty of top grades to dish out, but not everybody is so lucky. There will be lots of DCs (particularly boys) like @Lipsofchicken's DS who had high targets, planned to work for the real thing but did not do as much as they should for the mocks and have no idea how that will impact on their grades.

BackforGood · 20/07/2020 22:57

both courses are in Clearing.

I think I've missed something completely here.
I assumed 'clearing' happened on (and after) results day.

@Monkey2001 How can something be 'in clearing' now?

and if it is a thing, where do we look ?

Monkey2001 · 20/07/2020 23:01

@BackforGood - for Warwick it was on their website - warwick.ac.uk/study/results/clearing/

but UCAS had loads of stuff in clearing already. The IB people already have results and the Scots get them soon.

Lightuptheroom · 20/07/2020 23:03

@BackforGood , clearing opened on 6th July and can also be used by anyone who decided to apply after the ordinary application round closed, the uni's have lists of courses available and students can make a late application now for those courses, so for example some uni's will already know that they haven't filled available spaces regardless of what happens to those who have made it their firm or insurance choice.

MillicentMartha · 20/07/2020 23:04

@BackforGood clearing opened earlier this month, for those who had no offers yet and/or had their grades. You can search it here or on the individual uni websites.

www.ucas.com/clearing-launch

Some places may well be gone by 13th August, though.

goodbyestranger · 20/07/2020 23:04

Monkey I don't believe you have a lot of experience of high performing grammars but believe me, they have their fair share of moderating nightmares!

With my own experience of multiple DC waiting for A level results and a current Y13, I just don't see that a couple of weeks makes any material difference. Better to let the exam boards have the time they feel they need, and hopefully the process will be that much more thorough.

Monkey2001 · 20/07/2020 23:04

UCAS clearing here www.ucas.com/events/2020-entry-clearing-opens-348886

BackforGood · 20/07/2020 23:48

Thank you all.

This is all a revelation to me. How dd I not know this, when this is my 3rd dc ?? Blush

Presumably though, on results day (in a normal year now, I'm not going to resurrect speculation about if grades will be higher or lower or whatever this year), places get added to clearing, once the universities know that X% of their offer holders either a) haven't got the grades or b) did better than expected and decide to move to somewhere else where a space has become available or c) are deferring ?
So 'clearing' listed at the moment isn't a final list ?

Railingsohno · 20/07/2020 23:52

I don’t think they will fill clearing places before the A level results come out. That’s my understanding anyway. Scottish results not out until Tuesday 4th anyway.

MillicentMartha · 21/07/2020 10:32

I think you are probably right, @BackforGood. They must estimate they have vacancies at the moment even before results are out. If you are applying now with results in hand or have already been rejected from your unis with, eg, IB results you can take some of the currently available places. Clearing lists don’t remain static.

OP posts:
Divoc2020 · 21/07/2020 10:58

@BackforGood - yes, as others have said it's a dynamic environment in Clearing.

However, as I commented earlier (I think) it's worth doing 'Clearing research' in advance of results day as once the results are in, places can get filled quickly.

DS narrowly missed his first choice and didn't have a lower insurance offer, but got a Russell Group clearing place. They told him all their clearing places for his course had gone by about 9.30 am!

DadDadDad · 21/07/2020 11:11

My DS has just received in the post from UCAS a Gilette razor (!), presumably some marketing collaboration to get male students using their product at university. So, two questions:

  • Anyone else got one of these?
  • What are they sending female students?

(I'll skirt round the whole gender ID issue for the moment).

Divoc2020 · 21/07/2020 11:13

Are people planning to have "what if?" discussions with DC before results day, or just wait and see what happens?

From my experience with DS1, it was useful to have had a discussion in advance with him before the emotion of results day hit, so e.g.

  • how keen are you to go to uni THIS year?
  • are there any other variations/ combinations of your course you might accept?
  • would you consider resitting any exams? (this is a more complex question this year!)
  • is there a shortlist of 'other' unis you'd consider going to, if you don't get into your firm/insurance
  • if you took a year off to reapply, what would you do for a year?

You want to avoid the risk of DCs panicking and accepting an offer they are lukewarm about in clearing.
Be aware that there is a lot of pressure on them - they see all their friends updating their social media statuses: "Off to Durham/ Yay! Going to Warwick!/ Oxford here I come!"
I can honestly say DS was devastated by his results and we had to scrape him up and coach him through the clearing process (school were utterly useless Angry ).
Thankfully it was a uni he had been to see, so it wasn't completely unknown territory.
