Continuation of the previous thread for those of us with children who are just finishing their 3rd year at university (so either "graduating" in 2020 or going into year 4 in Autumn 2020)..........

My twins' degree results will be out in late July. Good luck to everyone else waiting for finals results.

It is hard and privately I do worry about DS. He's not good at putting himself 'out there' and doesn't really know what he wants to do either.

Xenia · 09/07/2020 11:27

It is not easy for people who don't know what they want to do. My older son chose first to be a post man after graduating (for 3 years) and for the next 3 drives a grocery delivery van full time on PAYE and is very happy. I suppose with that I know what that given he set a low bar as it were (clogs to clogs in 3 generations as they say) I am comforted that any of my 5 will find something like like and cut their cloth accordingly.

I think my other twin (who mostly locked down here from March to June) is coming back from 3 weeks with his girlfriend's family next week and she staying with her parents for a bit.

I have said to both twins you have two months before you start law school and I think some plans could be made for fun things - there are places opening up, they been on a few trains anyway so may be the 2 months off will not be a disaster. One has some friends coming here to stay at various times I think not yet fixed.

I have no sympathy for mine. I told them3 or even 5 years ago what the timing is for lots of graduate jobs - eg law immediately after year 1 at university you start applying for vacation schemes. Start of year 2 of just before apply for training contracts in big firms etc etc. If people cannot be bothered to do what is needed years in advance nor search the internet to check deadlines then that is their look out...not that mine take my advice mostly, laughing as I type. The one who is getting an application in this week 2 days before the deadline when early applications last September have priority is hardly likely to get that job starting 2022.

Yeah, as someone who plans to the last detail, I find DS's lack of direction a bit stressful.
I don't particularly mind what occupation he ends up doing but 'just start working out what you want to do and make the plans, please!'

latedecember1963 · 09/07/2020 12:18

Ooh, get well pats for Errol's dog. 🐕
Reading the posts from the last few days fills me with a mixture of pride that they have all done so well inspite of the hurdles they have faced in the last few months and sadness that it's not ending with that last lovely summer of celebrations before the world of work begins.
Although DS2 had a few moments of self doubt at first about his decision to stay in Australia when Mr. Raab was telling everyone to come home, it's turned out to have been the right decision for him. His course has continued pretty much as planned and he hasn't had to do his finals in his bedroom. As a family, we have a lot to be thankful for.

So DS now has his 4th yr results - decent project marks, two really good exam results and one spurious one, so he’s asking to see the marked script. Marks on that paper seem to be pretty variable, don’t know if the “no detriment” policy will exclude that paper or not, as overall his marks seem to have improved on both semester 1 and the previous year.

Well done your DS.

I've heard from Dd that she will have 'something' from Bristol on the 22nd but she doesn't know if it's the dissertation, exams or overall Hmm

SabrinaThwaite · 09/07/2020 21:46

Thanks @Bettsbattenburg - I was surprised as I thought it would be this years graduates that would get results early July and DS still has another year to go. DS generally happy, so all good.

Xenia · 10/07/2020 09:41

My son who sent me a law firm application letter to check yesterday had put in it that he gets his degree results on 28 July so I suspect at least for his subject at Bristol that must be the day for him. Good luck to everyone else.

DD is looking at Royal Holloway for her Psychology Masters. Do any of you have students there and have any useful information for us, or questions we should ask?

She has done all her own research and even applied without telling us, but sometimes inside information is helpful.

SabrinaThwaite · 10/07/2020 13:27

@SMaCM my niece studied for a Masters in Psychology at one of the London unis (sorry, I know that’s really vague). She went to work for the prison service, initially as a prison office but hoping to move into a position as a psychologist within the service. She quickly found out that senior prison officers are much better paid than the psychologists, so that’s the route she has gone down.

SMaCM · 10/07/2020 14:22

Thanks Sabrina. She's keeping her options open at the moment.

Lightsabre · 10/07/2020 15:37

@dahliaaa, my dn has decided not to take up her Graduate Scheme offer unfortunately. The training in New York has been cancelled and she doesn't feel comfortable moving to London at the moment (has severe asthma). She's starting a Masters instead. It's a bit sad as it was a gruelling application process and the starting pay was almost double what I earn!

We just heard today that she's been awarded a 1st too (Oxbridge)! She's thinking also of a GDL. I'm just hoping the opportunities will still be there in a year.

bettsbattenburg · 10/07/2020 16:28

Well done to your DD @Lightsabre

SMaCM · 10/07/2020 16:54

Excellent grade LightSabre. Sooner or later there'll be another opportunity.

bigTillyMint · 10/07/2020 17:13

@Lightsabre well done to your DD

@Bettsbattenburg, my DD at Bristol says her online graduation is July 22nd, but final classification is 3rd Aug Confused

@Bigtillymint DD's is a couple of days earlier.

Lightsabre · 10/07/2020 19:08

Thanks all, it's my niece but we're very close!

ono40 · 10/07/2020 20:14

@Lightsabre congratulations to your niece. Like you @horsemad my son did History and has no idea what he wants to do now that the covid-shaped spanner has been tossed into the works. I hear that UCL has had a 400% increase in applications for Masters courses. He is 'thinking' about a Masters but is reluctant to do one until he knows what he really wants to do. I think travel is off the cards though...

Xenia · 10/07/2020 20:59

Lightsabre, well done to the niece. If she does apply now for the GDL for September (which my twins are booked on) and might want to become a solicitor, do tell her she can apply in the summer/Autumn 2020 for law training contracts starting in 2023 at City firms (she may already know) and if she gets one they may well pay her GDL fees and the year after LPC fees (she will just need to have a gap year from 2022 - given the timing of applications as contracts starting in 2022 for those firms are closed now I think). My daughter did this and it was a very nice gap year after 5 years of study with a trainee lawyer job to go back to.

Horsemad · 10/07/2020 22:35

Congrats to your niece @Lightsabre. 🙂

Yep @ono40, I shouldn't be surprised but I am 😲 at the 400% increase in Masters applications!

Hope your Ddog is recovering well @ErrolTheDragon, I'd missed that about his op.

ErrolTheDragon · 10/07/2020 23:11

DDog is doing quite well, thanks - walking is wobbly but he can do a sort of canter where the back legs are moving almost in sync surprisingly well. And of course he doesn't perceive tables, chairs and bushes as being obstacles which doesn't work too well with the bungee.

Lightsabre · 10/07/2020 23:31

Thanks @ono40, @Horsemad. Thanks for the advice @Xenia - I'll pass it on. She has an internship lined up for four weeks from Monday working remotely luckily (although how that will work in reality will be interesting to see).

Xenia · 11/07/2020 09:22

Good luck with the internship. If it is law one in a solicitors firm then those vacation schemes are often the best way to get a training contract as lots of the firms like people do to the vacation scheme first in university holidays (not that any of my 2 solicitors and 2 potential solicitor children ever listened to me on that nor did one.......)

So the silver lining to having his job withdrawn was that ds has been awarded a 1st! He seems to hate anyone congratulating him or mentioning anything about it which is a shame because we are all really proud of him. Still adamant about not doing a masters or pgce and currently has 30+ applications in for various jobs including one grad scheme so all fingers crossed.

Congratulations to all others with results and lets hope over the summer, the adapted plans come together.

BestIsWest · 13/07/2020 17:00

Well done to your DS EYV A fantastic result for him.

DS is beginning to consider doing a masters which surprised me because he’s been adamant that he wouldn’t.
