Heading towards 4th year or post grad/jobs

Continuation of the previous thread for those of us with children who are just finishing their 3rd year at university (so either "graduating" in 2020 or going into year 4 in Autumn 2020)..........

My twins' degree results will be out in late July. Good luck to everyone else waiting for finals results.

Is it as simply because London is a much more popular course than UWE Xenia? Or has something more general happened over the course of the year with numbers applying for the GDL meaning they're wobbly about numbers?

goodbyestranger · 06/07/2020 22:35

Apologies for the clumsiness of that post - filling the dishwasher - you probably get the gist.

hellsbells99 · 06/07/2020 22:56

Well done Bigbluebus DS!
DD got her results today and now has an MEng - very very happy here. It’s been 4 years of hard work and socialising. Now hopefully starting her grad job in September - fingers crossed.

SMaCM · 06/07/2020 22:58

Haffdonga DD applied for the post graduate loan at the weekend. The site seemed to be fine.

Sabrina that's awful about the lost work!

Xenia I think a lot of offers are changing at the moment.

Lovely to hear about students coming home, getting jobs and collecting results.

Xenia · 07/07/2020 07:38

Goodbye, not sure. it's BPP for the twins both in London and Bristol so the same institution. Anyway it does not matter as I think both are likely to get a 2/1 anyway. I suspect as Bristol BPP is much smaller than London BPP that might be the reason or perhaps it is just date - that if you apply the year before they want you to go all out for the 2/1 bigger law firms require and if you apply in July when your degree is finished a lower offer is not going to affect that.

My son says so many of his friends are doing masters that was not expected (they are doing it due to CV19 as jobs are harder to get and gap years travelling not easy to arrange) but he thinks not so much law because that course is so one career specific. However we have no data on that and I would have thought in a recession people tend to head towards what have often been relatively safe careers. Anyway at least they both know where they are going to be studying in September and can just enjoy the summer now. Although the one at home hates DIY so was extremely good at helping me insert fence panels yesterday whereas his twin (who isn't here) has always liked doing that kind of thing with me.

Well done to the hellsbells daughter and anyone else I missed.

I wonder if DS will get the same bachelor’s degree classification as @ErrolTheDragon DD - I’ll ask him (though he’ll probably be clueless). At least I know the uni has a no detriment policy in place.

Re this year’s graduates tending to apply for Masters programmes, DS’s uni is offering a 20% scholarship for those applying to stay on for a postgrad programme.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/07/2020 09:32

I suspect it's fairly specific to her course at her uni. They're caught between 'no detriment' and an unusual policy of rigid grade percentages, no 'inflation' allowed - no more than 30% firsts, 50% 2:1s, 20% other. The the third year grade is mostly based off exams. The combination of whether online exams are totally cheat-proof and also scrupulously fair given different tech availability makes this quite a hard circle to square.

SabrinaThwaite · 07/07/2020 10:05

DS’s BEng year has been a mix of exams (three were standard exams taken before Christmas, three were on-line after Easter, but others on the course will have done two exams in the first semester and then four on-line ones) and projects, with a smaller project in the first semester and then a big group project and linked individual project submitted just after lockdown (they have marks for these now).

Don’t think they have strict criteria on the classes of degree they confer though.

Haffdonga · 07/07/2020 10:25

Thanks @SMaCM. He's done it now. Not sure why it wasn't working every time he tried until yesterday. Now we just hope the masters can actually happen in a real (rather than virtual) way.

PennyForum · 07/07/2020 10:39

Hello all,
DS will get his results on July 22nd, which is just after graduation should have taken place
He had already applied for a masters before COVID-19 struck. He has the choice of doing it remotely or starting at the university. He has chosen to go and so we have found accommodation. He’s pretty confident of getting the 2:1 required based on grades, the due detriment policy and how he felt the exams went. ... well he’s calculated the hell out of it anyway. I guess that’s what comes from being a stats student!

The IB world seems to be erupting today as they have awarded results based on an algorithm. Lots of students downgraded substantially. I wonder what the universities will do given that Intake numbers will be down this year already.

goodbyestranger · 07/07/2020 10:48

Haffdonga not sure if you've said where your own DS is going but DS3 is starting a Masters at Cambridge in Oct and they've been sending regular emails saying it should all be pretty normal for postgrad students.

dahliaaa · 07/07/2020 13:17

Hi everyone
Does anyone have a DC hoping to take up offer of a graduate trainee scheme ?
DS has been called to say that his is being postponed till January.
I'm nervous for him whether will happen at all. He worked so hard to get it.

fiftiesmum · 08/07/2020 14:48

Penny - the universities will do as they have done for several years and admit people with lower grades than their original offer until places are full. They are not going to let £9+ walk out of the door by just the odd dropped grade or two. They can always do the cull at the end of the first or second year.
Many of the taught masters degrees are a combination of undergraduate modules taught with the undergrads and often majority are international students (at international fees) so there will be plenty of masters vacancies for home students

chitchattery · 08/07/2020 16:40

@dahliaaa DD had a grad trainee job that should have started in early August. They cancelled the contract last month. DD is so upset as like your DS she had worked so hard and it was exactly what she wanted. Hopefully as your DS scheme has been postponed they do feel that the situation will be different in January. Luckily DD was able to speak to her department and get on the Masters programme even though she had repeatedly told them she didn’t want to proceed to 4th year. She just picked her room for next year so is feeling more positive now.

IrmaFayLear · 08/07/2020 17:23

Ds has lots of friends in this position. He had his (paid!) summer internship cancelled. I’m worried there will be a lot of depressed young people around.

dahliaaa · 08/07/2020 19:30

I'm sorry others are in the same situation. It's so difficult for them all. Sad
Glad your daughter got her masters sorted.

BackforGood · 08/07/2020 21:42

All 3 of my (adult) dc now around the house, no work to go to, no money coming in (for younger 2). No real prospects of job for middle one (just finished her degree this year) Sad

Xenia · 08/07/2020 21:45

It is awful for people. Of course my lazy son says it vindicates his decision not to put any of that work in to get jobs / internships nor do any applications at all.

Most of us suffer a series of disasters and failures in life and these young people will be no different. In some ways that is what makes us stronger - how we deal with the set backs, failing. It is not whether we will fail that is the question but how we deal with it when inevitably it happens I suppose. At least they don't have young families to support and no wages coming in nor are most of them dying of covid 19 so I expect they will come through okay in the end.

BackforGood · 08/07/2020 22:35

You are right Xenia, thanks.
Think I'm just having a bit of a 'low' day today.
there's lots to be positive about in life Smile

hellsbells99 · 08/07/2020 22:43

It is very tough for those graduating this year as so many companies are cancelling or postponing jobs. And there isn’t the alternative to go travelling either.
DD currently does have a grad scheme starting in September ....I have everything crossed that it goes ahead. Although this summer was her one chance to go travelling which is obviously cancelled now.
But as Xenia says at least the majority have their health and few financial responsibilities at this stage.
Hopefully next year will be a whole different story and things will get better.

Stopyourhavering64 · 09/07/2020 03:31

Dd graduated last July ( with first class business degree) but then went travelling and was working in ski resort when she had to come home abruptly in March at start of lockdown...she was lucky to get a job with supermarket doing the online shopping and works 30hrs/ week . Unfortunately because I'm shielding she can't stay with us but luckily her boyfriend's family , who live nearby, have taken her under their wing ...she'll be applying for post grad schemes come September but is already taking about returning for another ski season as they're now recruiting...not quite what she'd envisioned at start of the year but there seem to be few opportunities at the moment and she's adamant she doesn't want to do postgrad at the moment...
my elder dd is still waiting to return to China - she was home on holiday and was due to return at end of Jan but then flights cancelled/ borders closed, so she's been teaching online since February and waiting for visa centres to reopen ...

madwoman1ntheattic · 09/07/2020 03:51

Dd1 is starting 4th year. Fully online until for first semester. Ds1 was supposed to be starting 1st year after a gap year traveling. He had to stop early and came home from Japan at the end of January just as everything was kicking off, so hey pretty much decided to defer and have a do-over of his gap year. 🙄 He starts work on Monday to start his travel fund again.
Dd1 is hoping to find a summer job. She should have been in the middle of three months volunteering in Switzerland so wasn’t planning on earning any money, but may as well give it a go now...

Bettsbattenburg · 09/07/2020 03:52

Awaiting results here too

ErrolTheDragon · 09/07/2020 09:12

DD has been very fortunate that her summer internship could be done remotely. She'll be here for the rest of the month, then will be going back to be with her BF (provided the Internet is good enough for work purposes) - they've found an Air B&B till they can move into their 4th year house hopefully some time in September.

We'll miss them (he's going back home today) - and at the moment extra hands are useful. Our dog slipped a disc on Saturday evening, he was CT scanned and had surgery the next day and was home by Tuesday. But he needs support from a bungee to walk, or be carried and then supervision - his front end is strong and determined!

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 09/07/2020 09:19

My DD has just graduated. I feel so sad for her - she couldn't celebrate her 21st birthday due to Covid, her graduation has been cancelled, they missed out on all of the end of year celebrations, saying goodbye to her friends for the last time and now she's trying to find a job in this mess.

It's really tough for this year's graduates.
