Continuation of the previous thread for those of us with children who are just finishing their 3rd year at university (so either "graduating" in 2020 or going into year 4 in Autumn 2020)..........

My twins' degree results will be out in late July. Good luck to everyone else waiting for finals results.

Just catching up with you all here after a busy week or two at work (i.e. the kitchen table). Smile

Congratulations to everyone who has had results, including the brilliant firsts. Flowers I think graduating this year is a major achievement for everyone because it's involved so much motivation and self determination to do it all alone.

@latedecember1963 congratulations on having your ds back home. How lovely Smile . When ds1 got back from his year in Oz, we were all so excited and happy to see each other but it was also actually a bit of a fraught time too. Ds was physically and emotionally something of a wreck as he'd fallen in love shortly before leaving and frankly wanted to be there with the gf, not here with boring old us, plus he wasn't sure if he wanted to finish his masters year. It took us all a bit of adjusting that I naively hadn't expected. I hope your ds has his head a bit more screwed on than mine Wink

It's an incredibly tough time for those who are job seeking. Ds has many graduating friends now back at home with parents unemployed, plus a couple doing unpaid internships from home. I really wonder if they'll get the benefits internships are supposed to bring without actually meeting their colleagues and going in to the workplaces.

@eatyourveg has your ds decided whether to go for the part time job? I agree with PPs - it could be a foot in the door and may lead back to the grad position when things re-open.

eatyourveg · 15/07/2020 12:00

Thanks for asking @Haffdonga Ds spoke to the company and the hours would only be 3 or 4 a day so he wrote to say he could only consider a full time or more than one part time position as he wouldn't be able to move to London (the original job included an interest free relocation loan) and his commuting costs would be more than a part time salary. They are still going to keep his name on the list of first pickings if his original job comes up as more offices are reopening though they are apparently not reopening around a third nationwide so I imagine those being made redundant will get offers before those who were due to start after graduating.

He has just had feedback for a job he went for working for an MP. Apparently there were over 400 applicants for one position! Its not going to be easy. Dh is encouraging him to go for the civil service for more job security long term.

IrmaFayLear · 15/07/2020 12:06

I expect the civil service will be swamped. Ds has refused to consider it because he’s so convinced it’ll be a million to one chance.

goodbyestranger · 15/07/2020 13:07

DS has had his results and also got a first, which sees him safely into his PhD, provided he remembers to notify them before the official last day for notification, whenever that is. I feel very, very lucky that he wants to take this route, in that it removes him from the job market for another three years.

IrmaFayLear · 15/07/2020 13:20

Well done, goodbyestranger minor !!

Xenia · 15/07/2020 14:28

Congratulations on the results.

Well done @goodbyestrange s DS ! I’m feeling a wave of affection for the DCs and parents who have been on the iterations of this thread , through UCAS, moving in, years abroad and now results. DD is still waiting for hers, and as you all know it’s been a rocky road for her so we are really anxious .I love the support here - I’d never open up like this in real life...

goodbyestranger · 15/07/2020 17:13

Thanks for that, and fingers crossed for Carriemac DD - esp after the significant bumps.

bigTillyMint · 15/07/2020 19:38

Congratulations to your DS @goodbyestranger

Good luck to your DD @Carriemac

DD had another formal confirmation of the offer on her Masters provided she gets a 2:1 - I am feeling a tad nervous for her, and such a long wait still.

Horsemad · 15/07/2020 19:46

Well done to your DS @goodbyestranger, bet you're both really pleased with that result. 🙂

DS has had a haircut today - no more mad John McEnroe hair! 😆

Horsemad · 15/07/2020 19:48

@bigTillyMint, it must seem a very long wait for the Bristol students.

goodbyestranger · 15/07/2020 19:52

Thanks bigTilly and Horsemad. When do Bristol say the results are out bigTilly?

bigTillyMint · 15/07/2020 21:33

DD says the email said 3rd August. She should have been graduating on Friday Confused

goodbyestranger · 15/07/2020 21:37

That's a slightly bigger delay than Durham bigTilly, but not by much. They're clearly having to take longer this year. Best of luck to your DD.

SMaCM · 15/07/2020 22:29

Goodbyestranger great news about the 1st/phd.

You have all made me realise how glad I am that all DDs stuff is home and washed and not festering somewhere.

IrmaFayLear · 16/07/2020 09:42

Grin at the John McEnroe hair. A package arrived for ds yesterday and it was a... headband Shock . I think he is veering more towards Mark Knopfler...

Horsemad · 16/07/2020 10:58

Lol, DS had a hairband - it is redundant now! 😆

Xenia · 16/07/2020 11:19

I think one of my twins said Bristol results were end of July. I suspect both will get 2/1. One had quite a few first but that is probably unlikely unless the dissertation was particularly good. I did get my £660 back today for the graduation hotel booking so at least that can be ticked off the list of claims (and we got our summer holiday (late June) back too.

Glad Carriemac has found the threads supportive. Often there is no one else interested in these kinds of issues and a lot of people on MN have very small children so it is good to find parents of student age ones.

My son is back from his 4 week stay at his girl friend's home (after 12 weeks they were apart) and it has been very kind indeed of her parents to put him up there. He searched the whole house to remember everything when he left, remembered even his bike and then when he was home remembered he had left his lap top of all things! So he will probably have to fix to drive back soon to collect it in one day. I don't think it could be safely trusted to the post. He has a call at 5 for a charity thing he is helping with some legal stuff so I hope he doesn't need the lap top for that.

Funny with the hairbands. Smile Ds got one last year. I think it only saw the light of day once as he didn't quite have guts to style it out in public. He could actually use it now as he's taken the lock down of barbers to heart and is still growing his mop (hair in our family grows outwards rather than downwards).

Congratulations to @goodbyestranger 's ds and good luck to those still waiting. Flowers

And @Xenia - Oh dear to your ds leaving his laptop behind! They're great big grown up graduates but they're all still fairly amateur adults, aren't they? (Well at least mine are complete numpties Wink )

Xenia · 16/07/2020 15:11

I know. I saw a lap top I had not seen before a big black one on his bed just now so he twin thinks he has found an old one at home and got that working so perhaps he will not be in a rush to get his back and his girl friend is coming to stay in about 2 weeks time I think so may be they can just wait until then. Meanwhile a friend from university was seeing another friend 5 minutes form us - very very small world, so has popped here for a quick chat. They are in a big room fairly far apart so i expect I will survive.

I'm the family hairdresser - DD always has me lop a couple of inches off the end of hers when she's home, and DH had the foresight to get some clippers back in February. DD's BF resisted all suggestions of a haircut when he was here, and when we took him to visit one of his sets of grandparents who live fairly near here he was also offered a trim but refused. I don't know about a band but he could have done with a hair clip or two.Grin
Mine just grows straight down, it's not too long as yet... may have to let one of them loose on it at some point.

DDs internship work has spread slightly from just computer based, my dining table now has various bits of kit on it (her boss was a bit surprised by what she had) but she's going to get a power supply tomorrow as it requires a bit more than the batteries which sufficed for school age work. This morning she was slightly taken aback (though mostly amused) at an email on which she and the woman member of the team were included - the salutation was "Hi Gents...". I told her she should complain it was a microaggression and she should cancel that bloke, and we had a bit of a robust feministy snort about it.

Eve · 17/07/2020 08:14

Congratulations to all those results coming in and I feel the washing pain. Did take a photo of my washing line with its 10 black T-shirt’s and send it to DS and Ask when he became a goth!

...and it’s the shoes - 10 extra pairs of size 11 trainers downstairs, usually in a pile to trip over by the front door!

DS2 got himself a job washing dishes in a pub which he is happy with and DS1 is beginning work on his dissertation between going climbing with friends.

He didn’t think a lot of his placement when he was doing it but now he’s been talking to his friends and hearing about their placements he’s quite pleased with his and so far he’s the only 1 to have a grad job offer.

SabrinaThwaite · 17/07/2020 10:24

We bought clippers about 20 years ago, and neither DS went to a barbers until they were 16 or 17. They have been invaluable during lockdown (though couldn’t get anybody to clipper my hair - apparently it grows in weird swirls so came under “too difficult”). My sister resorted to using horse mane clippers Shock

Horsemad · 17/07/2020 13:33

😆😆😆 at horse mane clippers!

We are off out for a meal to celebrate DS tonight (should've been graduation day today ☹️).

bigTillyMint · 17/07/2020 17:26

We have clippers. DS used them on himself during lockdown and then decided to grow “curtains” to cover his widows peaks. His hair looks dreadful but he won’t listen and refuses to go to the barbers Hmm
