Continuation of the previous thread for those of us with children who are just finishing their 3rd year at university (so either "graduating" in 2020 or going into year 4 in Autumn 2020)..........

My twins' degree results will be out in late July. Good luck to everyone else waiting for finals results.

I love hearing about all their plans. DD is still up typing at 3am working through her dissertation and the last of her assignments. She won't get her results until September, so I'll be checking in with belated results then. We are expecting a 2:1, but with a possibility of a 2:2. She will be disappointed if it's a 2:2, because she knows circumstances have affected her work.

IrmaFayLear · 29/07/2020 09:05

Well done everybody’s dcs. It only seems 5 minutes ago that they were starting.

I fear that ds is going to be one of those young men in literature “looking for an opportunity” . Sadly we have no distant maiden aunts (or any relatives at all much) so no Great Expectations to be relied upon! I come from a long line of Bob Cratchits, so I think ds may well end up on a high stool somewhere (most likely in his bedroom now Sad )

Carriemac · 29/07/2020 11:55

Well done all the DCs and parents for great results in spite of everything
Xenia we’re having the same re transcripts for masters admission, DDs uni says they’re not issuing them? Just degree certificate which is not enough

Xenia · 29/07/2020 13:52

Well particularly the firsts. Son's girl friend got her first result today. M y other twin also got a 2/1 and is very relieved as his dissertation mark earlier today was a slightly stingy 57 marks apparently (particularly given the strikes all year and then the pandemic) although he said the marker's comments on it were fair so he was worried it would drag him down to a 2.2 but it didn't. So all is well.

Bristol's website seems to allow you to order 2 things and suggests ordering them separately as one comes in 3 days or 5 and the other 10 working days - I think the latter was full mark transcripts and the latter some kind of overall mark verification. I think my 2 should both apply for each of those separately and get on with sending all the law school needs which apparently as well as passport and A level certs requires some English thing - i suspect GCSE english lit and lang certs will be enough for that but we need the degree item before we can send the rest.

Anyway it's a relief to have the results.
My son whose result was out today said even after the result that he genuinely did not care if he had a 2/2 or 2/1 but I think that's a bit unusual. His father got a 2/2 a long time ago.

I agree with Irma that is seems no time since they were starting. In a sense I feel their end of education is now put off by 2 years as they are both doing 2 years of law so what might have been the end is more like a mid point but none the worse for that.

..what brilliant results all round. Congratulations to all the hard working offspring and more so to the dedicated and supportive parents that have facilitated the fab results.

Xenia · 29/07/2020 15:05

Ah, very easy to download full transcript in seconds from Bristol by the way. One twin did it and we submitted all his documents including passport for his next course, GDL. The other will get his later. No waiting for degree certificates or things to come by post so that is very easy. I am not sure when they get the degree certificate itself.

I think oxford must be engraving them In unicorn ink on vellum...
'Not issuing them due to covid '
Honestly 30k in fees and this is the response

readsalotgirl63 · 29/07/2020 18:34

Congratulations to all the dc. I remember the feeling of relief that I'd finished and passed which lasted a few days before I realised I now had to get a proper job! Fortunately a postgrad course turned up which deferred the job hunting for another year.

DD has one more year to do as an undergrad( Scottish uni) and then is planning a postgrad so bank of mum and dad is still open Grin

bigTillyMint · 29/07/2020 18:38

Congratulations to all these DC getting their results!

simbobs · 29/07/2020 18:50

HI all, hope it is ok to give you all a wave. I recognise some names from other threads. I have a DD just finishing her 3rd year of a 4 yr language degree. I feels strange that so many of her friends are now (unemployed) graduates but she has another year to go. I also have a DS going into 2nd year. I am impressed that so many of you DC have done so amazingly well in what will surely go down in the annals of history as the most challenging year yet.

DD got sent home from her Year Abroad, which was such a shame as she had such a lovely work placement. She has spent most of the time since at home and self studying for another qualification.

bigTillyMint · 29/07/2020 19:03

Hi @simbobs Grin

Malbecfan · 29/07/2020 20:02

Congratulations to everyone's DC. What a hard-working bunch they are!

DD1 had a nice if quiet birthday. Her BF flew back to the UK on Saturday. His dad collected him from Stansted, drove him to Reading and he got the train down to Devon. He and DD are in our holiday cottage which is 10 steps from our door. They will have to come "home" on Saturday as we have friends arriving on Sunday. I need to tidy up the bomb site of a house but I'm still shattered. DD said she would cook tomorrow but apart from that I'm cooking for everyone each evening and doing everyone's washing, including the BF's. Not sure that this is much of a summer holiday Sad

Today one of my lovely pupils emailed and said she wants to take her grade 8 exam in August. The Associated Board are holding remote versions of grades 6 - 8 and as she's in year 12 now, she wants to get it over with. She was meant to take it at the end of March but it was obviously cancelled. She is a really good kid and I'm very fond of her, but that's going to mean at least 2 lessons and then accompanying her. I need to practice one of the pieces as I'm not a very good pianist, so that's even more downtime gone. Ho hum!

Xenia · 29/07/2020 20:28

carrie, i don't see why Bristol can produce transcripts in seconds and on the day the degree results are out and Oxford cannot. Presumably it is a fairly simple input of data task which even home workers could do albeit it is crucial to be accurate.

Full house here - I thought the one nightl ast night with no friend coming over wasrare.... Son 1 is here today (went to our dentist) and then, poor thing, his car exhaust had just come off just as he reached the dentist so he got that fixed after then tried the new nintendo switch with the twins which just arrived and is having dinner with his brothers here and now my other son's girl friend who has come for about 3 weeks bearing lovely flowers and chocolates as planned.

My son just told me about a second friend of his who was one mark off a 2/1 (same as his other friend) - that must be so irritating to be so close.

readsalot, bank of mother is still open here too (£20k lighter than last week as I just paid law school fees and deposit on flat for the one who is going to live in Bristol) . however the end is in sight. We started paying full time childcare for child 1 in 1984. It will be almost 40 years by the end... 40 years on.....

simbobs, good to hear from you too. Quite a few of my sons' friends are doing 4 years so that is one reason he is going to Bristol for another year to do law for a year whilst those doing a 4 year degree are still at it.

I am trying to be philosophical about this weird and crazy time, as it may well be the last time we all live together under one roof, and I do miss the DC when they are away - but not the washing. DS seems to pile it in the corner of his room and then 'harvest' it all in one go! Nor the cooking, either, esp as DD is vegan. I used to joke that she couldn't come home for more than 2 weeks at a time as that was the extent of my repertoire, though to be fair she does cater for herself quite a bit. She managed to get awarded a 1st for the year based on the transcript from the foreign uni where she did one of her placements, which was a relief after all the disruption. I wish her younger sibling were half as motivated...

Ocies · 30/07/2020 15:11

Hello all - I have often lurked on these threads but not often posted. Well done to everyone for having got this far and lovely to hear news of results.

Back on the first thread my dd was applying for Speech Therapy. She didn't get any offers to after much thought she undertook a degree in English Language. She has had a really good three years and has just achieved a First. She hasn't let go of her speech therapy dreams and is now considering applying for the MSc in a year or two. I said at the time she was playing the long game..... she really is!!

BestIsWest · 30/07/2020 16:02

Well done to her Ocies and to all the other DC who have done so well.

ono40 · 30/07/2020 17:25

Hello all, DS got his results last week and got a First! He is highly delighted, as are we given everything that has gone on this year including his health which is still not great (intermittent fevers). He got 80% in his dissertation and his tutor wanted him to go to Germany or Dublin for an MPhil/PhD but lurve has got in the way and he wants to stay here to be near his gf. Also he is done being a Historian! So, no plans to come off my payroll anytime soon by the sounds of it.

Well done to your two @Xenia for their achievements and for having plans in place for next year.

Great news for your DTs @Parker231 and your DC @Carriemac

Who have I missed?

Horsemad · 30/07/2020 18:21

Congratulations to @Xenia DT, @Parker23 DTwins, along with @Ocies DD and @Parker231

Horsemad · 30/07/2020 18:26

Typo, not sure what happened there!

and @ono40* DS too. is what I typed!!

Great results all round, they've done very well in a bit of a rubbish year, haven't they? 🙂

@SMaCM, your DD is almost there, do keep us updated.

SMaCM · 30/07/2020 22:13

Thanks Horsemad. I was sent a draft of part of her dissertation to proof read for spelling errors etc. She sent it at 2:30 this morning. She seems to do her best work in the middle of the night (always been the same).

Parker231 · 30/07/2020 23:26

It’s going to be weird for the first time in 21 years DT’s are doing something different this autumn. They went to the same school but different Uni’s but now DS will go back to Warwick for his masters and DD will move to Brussels to start work as soon as she gets her visa.

Xenia · 31/07/2020 08:52

Ah interesting Parker. My twins both went to Bristol although different friends, halls, houses. They are both doing a post grad law course (GDL/law conversion) this Autumn but one living at home in London and the other in Bristol although they both start it on line so I suppose they could be anywhere. Mine (boys) shared a bed room until they were 18 which is unusual but are very different but close.

They also chose to be in different classes at school aged 4 too and right through. I was relaxed either way as was their school so they chose which was interesting but probably sensible. They are not identical. They look very very different too.

Thanks everyone. It's so lovely hearing about new plans for jobs or more post grad study.

hellsbells99 · 01/08/2020 00:12

Well done with all the excellent results!
DD2 has enjoyed being home and meeting up in friends’ gardens. A few of them went to the beach today.
She will be moving out again at the beginning of September ready to start her new job. We have been house hunting and managed to sort a house share out with 3 other new graduates all starting at the same company but different departments. DD is the only one who has seen the house so I hope the others like it! She is aware how lucky she is that the job is still going ahead in the current climate.

RedHelenB · 01/08/2020 04:31

Not been able to sleep, so catching up on all the news. Wow, I cant believe how well everybody s DC have done! I am sure they'll be just as successful in their new paths. Dd 1 has a whole first week back on COVID protocol, but given what is happening in the news today is worried that they won't be able to do much on clinic in September. At least she and her fellow dental students have sorted out which bedrooms their having in their new house. First run of getting stuff back to uni houses will be next week with dd2.
