Continuation of the previous thread for those of us with children who are just finishing their 3rd year at university (so either "graduating" in 2020 or going into year 4 in Autumn 2020)..........

My twins' degree results will be out in late July. Good luck to everyone else waiting for finals results.

Well done on all the results, esp. twins getting the same classification - phew!

SabrinaThwaite · 01/08/2020 06:07

Great results from everyone!

DS1 finally home from the frozen wastelands of the North (well, Scotland) and now emptying the fridge on a daily basis. I think the length of his stay will depend on when the gyms reopen in Scotland. We have a great gym (apparently) on our doorstep and DS had negotiated a temporary membership, but it’s shutting down again on Monday (not sure why) so he’ll probably head north again.

bigTillyMint · 01/08/2020 07:44

@hellsbells99, that sounds great for your DD! Reminds me of when I moved in with 5 other brand new graduates.... Grin

DD is still waiting for results Hmm but says she will be home again next week. We aren’t there Grin

Yes, twins getting the same is nicer. One of mine at A level got one grade lower ina subject his twin didn't do and it was the highest grade in the school and he won the prize in it at school and it was his degree subject but it was a B. I always felt it was a rather unfair but didn't got for a remark as he only needed AAB for his course anyway. However their A levels were the same other than that and AS identical AAAA. So I was glad they both got a 2/1 for their final result. The twins with the first above - very very well done too. I did know one man who had twins, one having a birth brain injury - so very bright one and that injured one was at a special school so very different outcomes. In fact when I was told it was twins I was not delighted sa I know twin births can be risky and often premature. My huge monsters stayed in until 40 weeks to the day - latest of any of my children and were fine.

Sabrina, nice to have yours back I expect. We have the twins and the girlfriend of one staying but think the couple are going elsewhere tonight - I will have to check later. Yesterday outside so pretty safe they set up the huge paddling pool and sun loungers etc and 2 university friends who live near us came over and my other son's school friend so it was a busy garden (I didn't strip to my underwear to sunbathe with all that lot there) but nice to see it used.

RedH, my older son came back one day this week during the day on a day off work to use our dentist as he has not registered with a new NHS one since he moved and they kindly saw him and were able to take out a filling and clean and give antibiotics (but no root canal treatment for now - he didn't make a note of what they said but thinks she said there was a waiting list for it but does not know if he is on it anyway hopefully the dental work cleared it up. He said they were very good, lots of PPE more than usual so it is good to see some dentists opening up as a lot of people do need urgent care). Good luck to your daughter.

Good luck to those still awaiting results.

I did point out some (not all) law firm training contract applications open from today for the Autumn season for jobs starting 2023 but I think they are enjoying the summer too much. However it is much much easier to apply now in August when you have no academic work.

Thanks @bigTillyMint
Hope your DD’s results go well.
Xenia I have DDs only 1 year apart, so they also do a lot of comparison with each other. Not helped by DD1 dropping out of her original degree and starting again, so they both ended up as freshers at the same time but at different Northern universities.
DD2 will find it hard to move out this time as it feels a bit more final - no long holidays at home. And also her sister is living at home due to Covid19 and her boyfriend Is too. Will also be strange starting up a new ‘bubble’ in the current times increasing risk again - all 4 of them will be coming from different parts of the country. And will be going out to work. And I dare say for a few drinks. And obviously she will want to come home sometimes. Very strange times!

Carriemac · 01/08/2020 10:52

My twins got the same A level grades which was lovely. I suspect DS will get a first next year, but he would acknowledge his degree is far less demanding that his twins Oxford one. Exciting times for everyone , and sometimes challenging to parent these 21 year olds who are itching for freedom and company whilst maintaining the social new rules .

Just been cleaning and seeing a photo of DD1’s graduation last year makes me sad that I don’t have one of DD2. First world problem I know in the current circumstances but still sad that the end of university has been cut short for them and all the usual celebrations haven’t happened.

It'll happen though won't it, just later.

We did a little celebration at home and decorated the sitting room and DD had champagne and so on. You've reminded me, we haven't watched whatever temporary online thing Bristol did until graduation can take place.

hellsbells99 · 01/08/2020 12:06

penelopeplums I am hoping it will still happen but come next year, they will have all moved on with their lives (hopefully) so my not be inclined to go to graduation. As I say a first world problem and me just being a bit maudlin

Xenia · 01/08/2020 12:14

Someone should offer a service where they photoshop your face on to a gown with a certificate being held at the least! I am still wanting one of mine to send me his marks transcript as I have it for his twin and my own records. My daughter went to a February graduation in Bristol 13 years ago (as she worked abroad that previous summer) and it was fine but I am not at all sure universities will bother as I doubt we will be over all this by February. I have a video of the graduation of the older 3 (the last 2 I bought the official video not that it is particularly exciting and for the first made my own). Anyway the main thing is they are getting degrees this year and can move on.

Good luck to anyone still waiting for results and to all struggling with bubbles and contact - at the moment it feels like every parent in thel and except for me isn't having people to stay (wise them) and I am not appreciated for reluctantly giving in to their pressure and opening the usual summer "hotel" service. I just vacuumed downstairs and it was much worse for all the friends they have had in school and university ones.... although I think yesterday 2 stayed in the garden on sun beds. So I always say to my children why are all these people here and not you at the friends' parents? The answers vary - some parents are obese or sick and shielding, others just say no, others have a small house so if they visited they would be in a shared living room with lots of other family members whereas here we have spare rooms and space - so I am hoist by my own petard. Anyway better they have lots of nice friends than are crying in rooms alone and as no one has got up yet I have had 5 hours of total peace other than my hoovering..... which I put off until about 10.30am to help the sleeping ones get sleep.

Now there's a thought, I could probably do that.
As for graduation, I didn't bother to go to mine - it was an expensive day and didn't seem worth it.

Good idea 😂
And I didn’t go to my graduation either .....due to my parents splitting up and I couldn’t be bothered with the hassle of them arguing.
Oh well, back to cleaning the house .....which I have been putting off...

SabrinaThwaite · 01/08/2020 13:14

The downsides to DS being back is my fridge is permanently empty, and no matter how many eggs I buy he eats the lot. I have had to hide the last 4 so his brother can bake a cake later on.

penelopeplums · 01/08/2020 13:16

I graduated just before my DD applied to university, it'd have meant an unpaid day off work, travelling down to Milton Keynes and spending a ridiculous amount of money to spend the day with people I'd never met at a university I'd never been to and for a degree that I wasn't proud of. All in all, a waste of money.

BestIsWest · 01/08/2020 15:05

I hated my graduation day - I really didn’t want to go. However I absolutely loved DD’s. It was such a lovely family day. My parents drove up as well and managed to get some spare tickets and I have lovely photos of them with DD. DS has said that he’s heard some universities have cancelled completely. This seems so unfair to me. I know he was really looking forward to it.
I was joking that I’d failed him by not hiring a cap and gown to take photos in the garden. He agreed ( but he was laughing). It may come to that yet.

penelopeplums · 01/08/2020 15:27

We bought a cheap mock cap online and went out and did some informal, fun photos.

MarchingFrogs · 01/08/2020 20:38

I quite enjoyed my graduation ceremony, although the G&T in the bar which up to then had helped make it enjoyable eventually transformed into concern that I would fall over my feet in front of poor Princess Anne.
Unfortunately, when DS1 graduated a couple of years ago, a catalogue of administrative disasters led to him being graduated in absentia, even though he was working on campus at the timeSad. We still traipsed up on the day and sat eith him in a nice Thai restaurant in the city centre and watched other people being 'done' on my phone...

bigTillyMint · 01/08/2020 21:06

I can’t actually remember my graduation ceremony Shock
I can remember my mother and godfather taking me out for lunch before and pictures on steps of City Hall after with all my course mates, but.... Biscuit

Xenia · 01/08/2020 22:46

My twins went to their 3 older siblings' graduations and it will be a pity if they don't have one of their own. However at least they have got their degrees and degree results. I remember my graduation - one sibling and my parents came. i scanned the photos last year when I was scanning my old photos so was reminded of it and who was there and I have a scan of part of the programme which shows who got which grades and looked a few people up on-line to see where we ended up (we graduated in law in 1982)

Dd went to her brother’s graduation four years ago and I got a lovely picture of the two of them with dd wearing ds’s mortar board. It’s 5e closest she’s going to get to wearing her own for a while!

Dd is the sort of person who prefers to have a small number of close friends rather than a wide circle (ds is the opposite). All her school friends and her university friends live quite a long way away now so she is feeling quite isolated at home. It’s a good job we get on well!

bigTillyMint · 03/08/2020 16:45

DD finally got her results! High 2:1 Smile So she has her place on the MSc!

She was planning on DS coming to her graduation, so hopefully the MSc one will happen next year!

goodbyestranger · 03/08/2020 17:33

Very well done to small bigTillyMint :) Congrats!

Horsemad · 03/08/2020 17:48

Congratulations to your DD bTM! 🥂🍾

Xenia · 03/08/2020 20:35

Well to the bTM daughter. My son's university friend who has arrived today to stay got his Bristol result today - 2(i) too so all well for him too. I was speaking to someone today whose sons had A levels and GCSE this year - so no exams and they are both last minute workers who I suspect are the ones who may well lose out this year. I think our final year children have had it luckier than younger ones.
