American universities

Can anyone advise me on how difficult/easy it is to get into an American university as a British student (not the top universities but a decent one)? Also how much it costs given that I assume no bursaries/loans are available to overseas students?

My youngest really wants to do this and I'm trying to figure out how much I'd have to save up and if I need to dash her hopes now or if it might be feasible.

To add, this was a year at a university, not a year in industry type.

Thank you I will get her to look into it.

@Sadie1974

I’ve just been reading this thread as DD would like to study in America however I think it is worth investigating degrees in the UK with a year in America, does anyone know of any UK universities that offer degrees with placement years in America?
Hull University used to do 4 year American Studies....don't know if they still do,

She could consider doing her normal degree here and then going to the US to do a Masters for a year?

That is what I did, it opened a lot of doors for me professionally. Plus you only have the expense of studying overseas for a year.

The other option would be a 4-year degree with a study year or placement in the US in the 3rd year. Lots of UK unis offer this as an option.

Birmingham Uni definitely does this for some subjects.

A large number of Sussex’s courses have a year abroad in the States.

LSE do a student exchange with a year at Berkeley.

That’s all really helpful thank you especially the idea of the Masters. She is looking to do a degree in either Biology, Psychology or both.

Your DD can use the UCAS website to search for degree courses in these fields which do a year abroad. Then ask at Open Days about the schemes, and check the quality of the US colleges offered (there are a lot of US colleges, and not all of them of the kind of quality we might expect).

St Andrew's does a joint degree programme with William and Mary that consists of two years in each uni and also offers year abroad and semester abroad opportunities in the US.
