Bristol or York for Politics & International Relations?

Bristol or York for Politics & International Relations?

London state school DN cannot make up her mind. Bristol (the city) would be the easier choice as it’s just London-lite, her words, not mine.
But she doesn’t want to make an important decision on the basis of just
lifestyle, at the same time she knows next to nothing about York, or how competitive the course is in Uni of York.

Not visited York.

She is very independent. Has quite an impressive CV already, for a 17 year old student.

She is desperate for an offer from LSE but that’s their most competitive course so she is trying to psych herself up to leave London.

Only speaking from own dd experience. She did her undegrad at bristol loved her time whilst there.she didn't really find her friendship circle till year 2. Which she said wasnt a bad thing or anything reflective of the uni social groups. She just didnt really go out that much or was in a hurry to do so either. But what she does love is bristol has that quirky, no one bats an eye if you have a outrages sense of dress or a bit different if you understand what I mean. You can be anything you want it's fine, dont have to conform. After she graduated she went to Imperial to do her Masters ..
She loved london too. The experience taught her alot on cultural diversity and really getting to really understand a globalised kind of mindset amongst her peers on life, education and academics etc..
Now shes back in Bristol doing a PhD ..She does feel more at home in Bristol and can see herself there in the future. We are from up north. Dd went to a bog standard rubbish comp.. and really uni is what you make it in the end. I dont think she ever really picked on uni based on private or public school. She did look at York at undergrad but didnt like the campus her dept were a bit run down 1970's comp school looking. Probably changed since she looked but it did remind her of her school. But I'm one of those that feel dd has reaped alot from bristol uni on a personal level and academically. I know others may not share the same experience with their kids. But it's been only positives this end.

777 that’s really lovely to hear and I wish your daughter all the best with future endeavours - Bristol’s independent streak and quirkiness makes it very appealing to my DN. The non-judgmental attitude is great.

We have always said in my family that we could live in Bristol or Manchester and not miss London. Admittedly only been to Didsbury. I know there are more desirable areas in Manchester so this has nothing to do with that. I just liked the vibe of Didsbury and thought I could live there. I know Bristol fairly well.

Your comment at 19:23 was really nasty. Are you this horrible in real life?

Just to add to bubbles comments earlier Bristol has an extensive well established professionally run outreach programme in place which dd has been part of for several years, teaching coding etc and raising aspirations amongst many parts of the local community.
Not social experiments but passing on useful skills.....
More research needed?

I think Hugo questioned your earlier posts because some of the assumptions made were just too ridiculous to be believed but now you have just turned nasty. Completely uncalled for.

@MilouSnowy did you mean to be such a bitch, would you say that to someone in real life? Those are really nasty words to throw at someone and you should take a good look at yourself.

LSE is her dream uni for that course but if she ends up at Bristol or York she wants to carry out a comparative study of underperforming communities (students) from those cities and London. I mean in her own time.

And

LSE is the only place where she really doesn't care who else is going to be on her course or where they come from, if she is lucky enough to get an offer that is. If she stays in London she will be too busy with her current projects to even notice other students.

And

The thing with my DN is that she sees university as a social experiment where she can "study the classes". For her, it is much more than just being able to make friends. She would like to recruit fellow students to help out at her projects. This is easy to do in London where she already works alongside students from UCL, KCL, LSE QM, Imprerial etc.

And much more of the same ilk did seem certain to provoke reactions eventually.

Posters have been very patient with you OP.
