Applying for uni in 2021...

Thought I'd start the ball rolling on this one...

Dd wants to study psychology and we've been checking out dates of open days.

Her school still does AS levels. She's doing psychology, physics & business.

Please come and join us on the long and bumpy ride past revision and exams and on towards the much anticipated start of uni life in Autumn 2021.

Storm you could also look at Extra - you only get one shot at one course and one uni (and have to decline any offers made) but if there is a particular course she is interested in at a particular uni it's worth a shot, especially if it's at one of the universities which has already made an offer for law.

MrsMiaWallis · 13/12/2020 13:09

Dd has had very good offers from Bristol, Exeter and Nottingham. Not heard from Edinburgh and St Andrews yet.

GaribaldiGirl · 15/12/2020 11:24

We’ve heard from Exeter, UEA and Lincoln but not heard from York. Given DS has not visited any of them not sure how he’ll pick 😂. He’s applied for 2022 as he wants a gap year so was surprised to get quick offers.

FleeceNavidadToEwe · 15/12/2020 21:40

@FleeceNavidadToEwe

DS got his Sheffield offer today. Exeter a couple of weeks ago. Bristol 'on hold', as expected. Nothing from the other two yet, one is usually late, not sure about the other one.
Update: Bristol offer came through today Smile - that was a nice surprise (Politics & IR). Nothing from London yet though.
NotDonnaOrBlitzen · 16/12/2020 00:01

Still waiting on Bath but no news is good news especially after LSE rejected today.

KittyMcKitty · 16/12/2020 09:21

Fleece congratulations to your ds for the Bristol offer - fantastic! Ds got an email from Bristol yesterday saying “I know it’s really hard waiting for a decision but hope you have a nice Christmas and we’re closed from Monday” 😒

Donna sorry to hear about LSE hope your dd not too down.

calculatorqueen · 16/12/2020 09:56

@NotDonnaOrBlitzen Sorry to hear about LSE. I'm sure she'll hear soon from Bath, DS didn't hear until the end of November for economics and he was an early applicant.

fayebebaby · 16/12/2020 10:35

@NotDonnaorBlitzen sorry to hear about LSE. Hopefully get good news from Bath. All offers in now for DD. All standard ones as per the website

GreenPuppy · 16/12/2020 13:12

Bit late to the party! Well done to all these DCs getting offers, and commiserations to those who aren't. It is a hard time to be going through this isn't it?

I can see @fayebebaby DD has got offers at standard level for psychology for all five choices which is lovely. Has anyone else had the same, or offers below standard level? Esp for Psychology?

DD is yet to submit her UCAS form - school have booked a time to do it when term goes back Angry. She is using the extra time to dither! Choices include York, Nottingham, St Andrews, Cardiff, Bristol, Bath, Royal Holloway, Loughborough, Lancaster and Sheffield. I'm just wondering if any of them are making lower offers - it might influence her decisions! She has high predicted grades if that is relevant.

MrsMiaWallis · 16/12/2020 14:08

greenpuppy dd got lower offers from Nottingham. Standard AAB with a grade lower for EPQ (which she has), was offered BBB!

MrsMiaWallis · 16/12/2020 14:08

Not psychology though, philosophy

MrsMiaWallis · 16/12/2020 14:42

She also got BBB from Exeter if she firms them (standard offer AAA)

GreenPuppy · 16/12/2020 15:10

Thank you @MrsMiaWallis How fantastic for your daughter, and lovely that the pressure for her is eased a little given all that has been going on.

Useful info for DD re Nottingham, though she hasn't done an EPQ. I wonder how much depends on each institution, each course, each candidate when it comes to making offers. Upthread @fayebebaby reported that her DD got standard offers for psychology, but I can't recall if Exeter or Nottingham were among them.

doistayordoigo · 16/12/2020 16:02

DS just got an offer from Liverpool for Vet Med Grin Grin Shock
I am so happy for him, not least because today is his 18th birthday and we're in tier 3 and can't even go out to celebrate or meet family.

Fab news - the offer, not the not being able to celebrate his 18th - my son's 18th was in November lockdown, so he couldn't celebrate either :( - but he has had three offers so far. He got three within a week but looks like it will be after 15 Jan to hear from the other two.
AdditionalCharacter · 16/12/2020 16:13

Saw this thread on active convos and thought I'd join.

DS1 has had 4 offers for law, think he will choose York out of the 4 he has been offered. He did have Durham as his 5 choice, but he refuses to do whatever pre test he has to take as it's £50 and doesn't guarantee him a place anyway, so ruled that one out.

New to all this university stuff, neither DH or I went to university, super proud of DS1 getting offers.

fayebebaby · 16/12/2020 16:19

@GreenPuppy offers from Loughborough Nottingham Sheffield all standard AAB Bangor BBB and Liverpool BBB as she’s doing 2 science A levels otherwise it would be ABB

FastMovingLuxuryGoods · 16/12/2020 16:39

Hi all, hope I can join a bit late in the day.

DS is applying for Politics & IR and has offers from York, Leicester, Strathclyde and Salford. He did also apply for Manchester but didn't get an offer, which threw him for 24 hours as it was his favourite, but he seems back on track now!

I think he will probably end up firming York and having Strathclyde as his insurance. Both great universities in fantastic cities so no complaints here.

After the Manchester disappointment I reminded him that when I applied for uni back in the dark ages I got ZERO offers! Not a single one. I ended up going through clearing to a wonderful university that I loved, had a fantastic time and came out with a good degree. I'm now a university lecturer and UCAS admissions tutor Wink

GreenPuppy · 16/12/2020 16:51

Haha @FastMovingLuxuryGoods! That is a very interesting post.

As an admissions tutor, any idea why Manchester didn't make your son an offer? I can imagine it did throw him, irrespective of the offers from his other four.

@fayebebaby thank you for that detail. Great that your daughter has both offers from her favourite and wriggle room for insurance grades too.

@AdditionalCharacter - what's the £50 extra fee thing about??

@doistayordoigo - congrats to your DS. I understand Vet Med is one of the most competitive to get into. He must be delighted to have an offer in hand. Happy birthday indeed

@cologne4711 - ah, lockdown18ths! Such a bummer. I worry for how hard they are going to party once it is finally allowed Shock

AdditionalCharacter · 16/12/2020 16:57

@GreenPuppy it's called ELNAT or something like that, it's a competency test to make sure they can work with their style of learning. Might be specifically for the law course he wants to do.

doistayordoigo · 16/12/2020 17:03

Thanks guys! GreenPuppy Yes Vet Med is very competitive, he is very relieved, but also delighted as Liverpool was his favourite when we looked round.

FastMovingLuxuryGoods · 16/12/2020 17:21

@GreenPuppy, not sure but it may be that his GCSE profile is a bit, ummm, spiky - it runs the gamut from 9s to a 4/3 in science Hmm - so I guess Manchester perhaps felt they had the pick of more consistent candidates. Which is fair enough, it's a very popular university and they can afford to be choosy.

NotDonnaOrBlitzen · 16/12/2020 23:08

Lots of great offers coming in. Huge well done to those!! Yes, the LNAT (weirdly pronounced el-nat) is specific for law & only necessary for some universities. Exeter is another.
I think the gcse profile is often an issue. But one outlier seems harsh!!
Not sure which poster was asking about reduced offers for psychology but Birmingham have stated that they are reducing by a grade across the majority of courses. DDs was reduced from AAA to ABB - no firming necessary and will be her insurance. Has to be all her others are A*AA 😱

cologne4711 · 17/12/2020 08:34

York and Strathclyde sound fantastic options! Two amazing cities to study in.

I worry for how hard they are going to party once it is finally allowed yes it is a bit concerning ;)

AdditionalCharacter · 17/12/2020 08:59

Ha I didn't even think of it as LNAT. Blushthanks for clearing to at up.
