Newcastle hotel accommodation

Hi, Lovely to have found you all please may I join the gang?
My dd has an interview with Newcastle approaching and it's proving tricky finding a hotel for a 17 year old, the minimum age appears to be 18. Her interview is first thing and she may have to go on her own.
Can anybody recommend a hotel close to the old library where the interview is held as we are not familiar with the city.

Possibly try the YHA? I've just tried making a trial booking for a mythical 17 year old lone female for the hostel in central Newcastle and it appeared to be letting me do it.

You might like to try Premier Inn, too. I did a quick check on their website and it says they are OK with over-16s.

Thank you! I will contact them too. We would like to have gone with her but we have a poorly dog and work commitments so we will see. I am assuming any of the hotels in the centre are walkable to the university otherwise a taxi I suppose.

All very walkable. We’re there for interviews next week and will stay on the Quayside as we like it there. Depending on the weather, (and the nerves) we’ll either walk or take a taxi up to the venue.

If she can stay at a Premier Inn the one on Newbridge Street is the nearest to the university. I assume the interview is for medicine?

The medical school is behind the main university buildings so the Newbridge Street Premier Inn is the most convenient. The one on Newgate Street is another option.

I would say the Premier Inn at the Gate, it's fairly new, in a lovely old building which used to be the Co-Op. It's not very far to walk to the University - it's at the top end of town. The Medical school is just behind the main university buildings at the Haymarket - a nice walk through the arches and quad. The old library buildings are just off the quad, not in the medical school itself (unless they have another old library!) Is she arriving by train? She could walk from the station - it is uphill - or hop on the Metro to Monument or Haymarket. Best of luck to her for the interviews, I came to Newcastle as a student and never left! It's a great city and a fantastic place to be a student.

Many many thanks, she is booked in at the Premier Inn at the Gate .
You were correct in that it allows 16 year olds and over to book.
Fingers crossed for all medicine applicants having their interviews in the next few weeks.

Good luck to your DD. My daughter is at Newcastle and loves it. Not doing medicine though.

It was a bit of a shock initially going up on her own. She saw things very differently not having us with her and even questioned if uni was for her after wandering around finding the old library building the night before.
She is an independent traveller and very happy with her own company but I think it made it more real going alone. We live 7 hours away and she isn't familiar with the north east. It all felt very different, again being on her own and she was trying to imagine herself there.
She has no idea how she did in the interview but was very impressed with the medicine block and would love an offer now.The premier inn was well located so thank you for the heads up.

DD has lectures at the medical school as she is doing biomed. It is nice and handy for her halls.

Best of luck to her. It is a big thing travelling such a long way on your own, staying on your own etc. and then a high pressure interview on top. My D1 had a similar thing for interviews before Xmas, a 5 hour train journey, getting a taxi (I had to describe how to do that to her!) and staying somewhere strange on her own. She's been known to get on the wrong bus just to get into town here!

Not surprising that this might make them worried about the whole idea of going to university, but I'm sure once they actually get into their courses and find friends they'll be absolutely fine

In your post you say 'we' cannot go, was it not possible for one of you to go along with her?
It is done now, but hopefully next time one of you can attend with her. I hope the interview went well.

I did it with DD this week. We live a similar distance away and it is a big step to make that journey and stay overnight independently, so well done to all DC who did it on their own.

We have lots of family/friends there, I was free so I was happy to accompany her. However, if she does get that offer (fingers crossed) she will go up on her own for the offer day. I think it’s really important that they get a feel for the length of journey and how far away it can feel.

Of all her choices, it would be my first choice for her. I daren’t let on though. DH qualified from there eons ago. It is his home city and time there simply fills me with joy.
