Glasgow computing science degree courses with HNC entry.

Bit of a long shot but wanting to move from Perth to Glasgow. My son has Aspergers and is doing an HNC at Perth College ( UHI). It’s good here for him as he can potentially do from HNC up to degree level, or if he gets an A he could transfer to Abertay. I’ve had a good look online at the Glasgow colleges and the only on which seems to go from HND to degree level is UWS which is out in Paisley. I feel could potentially move if he was in halls, but don’t think he’d manage in flat.

Most halls accommodation are flats. Catered accommodation isn't so popular these days. You need to specifically look for catered accommodation. I hope he finds what he is looking for.

Have you looked at Strathclyde instead? I pretty sure they already do a linked programme with one of the Glasgow colleges so that might make entry easier? Also easier if he did want to commute initially as train right into Queen street and just a short few minute walk into the Uni buildings.

DS currently doing CS at Strathclyde and commuting from Stirling, he was offered Glasgow but preferred the course at Strathclyde.

The problem with halls in Glasgow is that there are a lot of private halls which are shared flats and not everyone will be the same year or college/uni etc so it might be harder to bond well.

Have a look at Glasgow Caledonian too as they have 3rd year entry from relevant HNDs and might have lower entry requirements than Strathclyde. Colleagues son with Aspergers got great support at Strathclyde. I think he got uni accomodation for at least 2 years of his degree but as others have said it was self catered. I think he lived on ready meals and subways/greggs.

I attend UWS right now and there are plenty of student halls, but if you're moving to Glasgow your son can easily commute everyday. The uni is a 5 minute stroll from the train station.

Thanks very much for all the advice. I’ll recheck Strathclyde, think you needed higher maths as well as HNC. The only problem now is I panicked helping him with his UCAS and just applied to Glasgow Cale which doesn’t do second year entry. And to Perth College and Abertay. I’ll have a look at UWS too. Can you redo UCAS? 😱

The applicant can add more choices up to the maximum of five, if they didn't use them all to start with.

If he gets the extra one(s) on by the 15th the application will have equal consideration with all the others received before that date, but in practice, there isn't usually a problem with 'late' applications to many universities. Although having said that, perhaps he had better get his skates on, having seen the statistics in the Tines this morning about the number of Scottish applicants to Scottish universities affected by the cap on 'home' places given out.

I think you can switch UCAS choices for a couple of weeks after submitting.
