Continuation of www.mumsnet.com/Talk/higher_education/3538808-heading-towards-year-2-exams-uni-2017 as we have reached page 40.

Hard to believe they are all in year 3 now and many will finish university in June 2020.

Half Way not half term !!

ErrolTheDragon · 15/01/2020 20:29

Re holidays, DD wants to go on the uni ski trip next winter, and so asked us to contribute to that for both her Xmas and birthday present this year. We're happy to do this, but still want to send her something for her birthday as it's her 21st - not sure if there's really anything other than nice choccies and coffee that would work. She'll doubtless be celebrating with her buddies ...DH and I are planning to take ourselves out for a meal to toast her (and our efforts!Grin)

I sent the twins their Bristol graduation dates and mentioned it on the phone to one of them tomorrow as my emails are often unread and we had a bit of chat about it. When they older siblings graduated usually all the other siblings came or at least 3 of them (as they were students/at school) but I am not so sure on a week day and with very little annual leave that is likely to be the case year so I just wanted him to know a full complement of siblings (even if they can get enough seats - we have always managed to get enough tickets in the past) might not be there.
I will mention it to the other one too as he is the possible gap year one and I want him to start thinking about what he might be doing in July.

Good luck with the rest of the exams ollie pollys dd. Just dropped dd2 off at the station, she has her first uni exam in the Cathedral tomorrow.

Horsemad · 16/01/2020 19:40

That's a nice place to sit exams RedHelen. 🙂

RedHelenB · 16/01/2020 20:13

I double checked it. Cant believe the number of exam rooms that have at Liverpool!

Horsemad · 16/01/2020 21:58

I'm assuming it's the Metropolitan Cathedral, yes? 🙂

RedHelenB · 16/01/2020 22:08

Yes that's right Horsemad.

willothewispa · 16/01/2020 22:47

Is the Metropolitan one the colloquially named Paddy's wigwam (as was!) or the other one .

Horsemad · 17/01/2020 09:00

Yes it is @willothewispa.

One of my relatives lived in housing that was demolished to build the cathedral. I visited it a few years ago, it's a beautiful structure.

SophieSaph2020 · 17/01/2020 13:41

My DS is at Liverpool, final year, and has had exams at the Cathedral. He told me they are in the Crypt, so probably not as salubrious as being in main part of the building.

To my shame, I have still not been inside either Cathedral, despite him being there 2.5yrs, we living only an hour away and going over a few times a year. It is on my To-do-list for between now and Easter! Just asked DH if he is interested too, which he said Yes to (otherwise I’d go alone on a day off work)

Horsemad · 17/01/2020 16:06

I've done both and they are both absolutely beautiful. 🙂

ErrolTheDragon · 17/01/2020 16:27

I was taken to the Met. shortly after it opened - we had relatives in Liverpool. I don't think the Anglican one was actually finished at that point, didn't its construction end up taking many decades?

Xenia · 17/01/2020 16:40

I have been to mass in "Paddy's wigwam ". It is not really the ancient style I prefer but good of its type.

I just booked our hotel for the graduations in July in case they get booked up later. As it's twins on one day after the other it seems sensible to stay over night rather than rush back to London in between although that is technically possible and one twin at least wants tos tay into the following day for his friend's so they have 2 nights booked.

My twins have January exams soon.
The one who was burgled is glad the police recovered everything.

He continues to try to negotiate a rent discount - scaffolding not coming off any time soon and worse the building swathed in clothes/darkness. The scaffolding also enabled the burglar.

Yes Errol, it was finished in 1978, took 74 years to build.
I remember my Dad telling each time we visited Liverpool and went past it that it still wasn't finished!

Horsemad · 17/01/2020 17:47

I don't remember you mentioning the burglary Xenia, how awful. 😮 When did that happen?

latedecember1963 · 17/01/2020 18:34

That's awful about the burglary, Xenia. Was it over the Christmas holiday when they would have seen that the house was unoccupied? I think a discount is definitely due if the scaffolding was a factor.

Haffdonga · 17/01/2020 19:00

Sorry to hear about the burglary Xenia but actually good news that the police recovered the stuff. I think that's vanishingly rare these days. They just don't have the resources to follow up on the average student burglary. Sad I hope your ds can use it as further grounds for a rent reduction.

Good luck for the cathedral exams RedHelen's dd. Divine inspiration may help. Wink

Another halfway ball coming up here. DS has discovered he can only just fit into the dinner jacket that he wore in the first year. He tells me it's because he's even more ripped than he was then. To be fair it's actually true.

bigTillyMint · 17/01/2020 19:35

Yes very rare to get stuff back after a burglary. So that’s good. But being burgled is horrid.

Xenia · 17/01/2020 22:20

A neighbour spotted the thief climbing the scaffolding and the police arrived right away (in university holiday). The policeman spoke to the burglar who said he lived there - I presume he was back on the ground by then. The policeman didn't believe him and followed him and then the man ran off but left all the things he had stolen - x box, games controllers etc The policeman told my son he was sorry he couldn't also run after and catch the man but he had flu so wasn't up for the chase. At least they got everything back. (No insurance)

ErrolTheDragon · 17/01/2020 22:36

Phew, thank goodness for an alert neighbour!

willothewispa · 17/01/2020 23:49

I've just booked accommodation for graduation, there were only four rooms left !

Horsemad · 18/01/2020 01:04

😮 Eek willo, I can imagine the hotels will be packed out. Will be checking DS's uni website daily from Feb when their dates are released...

Lucky getting the stuff back Xenia, and well done the observant neighbour and a quick police response time too.

bigTillyMint · 18/01/2020 07:31

Yes I’m wondering about packed hotels...
DD will have moved out of her s* house by then - now the washing machine has finally packed up with all her washing sopping wet in it Angry

Xenia · 18/01/2020 08:16

We havent needed a hotel for the older 3 children's graduations as all on one day but it seemed a bit silly going to Bristol two days in a row and they probably want to celebrate there with friends and won't have a rented house by end of July (their tenancies are to 1 July) and it feels like the end of an era - last graduations of the 5 so I did it. Their sister went to the Bristol Feb. after graduation year one though as she was working abroad that summer but I do think it's nicer to do it in July just after if you can. Our course they have to pass their degrees first but I think they will. Their brother's graduation was about 9 years ago so things might have changed for them now but may be not. He had a university made DVD of it you could buy and the photo in your gown and a photo of when you received it shaking hands on the stage and with all 3 older children there seemed to be hours before at various times collecting hired gown and queuing up for photos etc.

Anyway lots of hard work to be done before that.
