Continuation of www.mumsnet.com/Talk/higher_education/3538808-heading-towards-year-2-exams-uni-2017 as we have reached page 40.

Hard to believe they are all in year 3 now and many will finish university in June 2020.

Good time to clear out once tips open and during lock down. Sadly our garden waste (3 wheelie bins of it) was missed on our road this week and it would have been the first collection since CV19 started so another 2 weeks to wait now with garden waste piling up. I hope they don't miss it in 2 weeks' time.

I will also have no more rents to pay from 1 July which will save a fair bit of money and not paying an allowance to the child who is not going on to further study either (unless he changes his mind). I think his twin's law school fees over 2 years will cost me about £28.5k so with his allowance about £44k. If he ends up being my trainee solicitor then more...... If his twin does the same then double......

Even so the end is in sight although I have committed to helping the twins have the same money for housing their older 3 siblings have for a first property so I need to earn to save that up too if I can.

Sounds like everyone is muddling along! Good to hear the old bits of wood came in useful @ErrolTheDragon and good luck with the bf staying Smile

DD submitted her diss last night (hooray!) so now has to get 2 essays done which are covered by the no detriment policy Wink
Then she is planning to go back to her student house with housemates and stay alert there Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 16/05/2020 12:39

This thread prompted me to check our council website - our local recycling centre has reopened, but by appointment only. I don't think we need it but it's good news. Fortunately the normal waste collection including the (extra charge paid) garden waste has continued as usual so we haven't accumulated heap ... though I really should attack the dogwoods ...

SMaCM · 17/05/2020 13:32

DD has managed to sort out her mitigating circumstances and a couple of extensions with no detriment. She is a bit sad to see pictures of peoples completed dissertations when she hasn't even started hers yet. Fingers crossed we will be finished at the end in August. I did say to her at least she won't miss graduating with her peers, because that's postponed to next year.

She is loving all the money she's saving by being at home and eating our food. We have warned her that rent will be payable once she's working.

Horsemad · 17/05/2020 15:49

That's great news @SMaCM, pleased to hear she got it sorted. 🙂

hellsbells99 · 17/05/2020 17:07

Excellent news SMaCM

latedecember1963 · 18/05/2020 07:50

Yay, on the dissertations by mini Horsemad, bigTillyMint and SMaCM!

DS2 has had a wobble over the weekend. He wasn't feeling very well and he's got deadlines coming up for assignments. We had a chat yesterday and he said he'd taken some Lemsips and tried to catch up on some sleep. He's whatsapped this morning and said he feels less headachey so hopefully it's just a 48 hour bug.

Xenia · 18/05/2020 08:22

Glad everyone is doing okay on the whole. One of my sons has to submit his dissertation fairly soon. He has done loads of work for it but it is not yet finished. I am sure he will feel happier once it is done. he always regards deadlines as the time to do things and then certainly with A levels does lots of work and gets good results but I think it's risky as you never know what might happen at the last minute - get ill, internet goes down.

Yes bravo for the handed in dissertations and SMacM well done to your dd. Sorting out mitigating circs and extensions is stressful in itself when you're feeling bad. I hope she feels the pressure's off a bit. As you say, of all the years to graduate late, this is the one where it will make the least difference.

LateDecember fingers crossed for your ds having a 'normal' quick illness. (What a strange thing to wish for Sad).

DS is now wondering if he had CV mid February. He suddenly became very ill with a very high temp and felt the worst he's ever felt in his life, but he also recovered within a few days and didn't appear to pass it on to anyone he'd been socialising or living with. At the time we discounted CV as it wasn't believed to be out in the general population. But there's now so much talk of it having been around in the UK since Jan or Feb that I wonder. Plus he was doing a placement in a hospital where early CV cases were being quarantined and treated, although in no contact with that part of the hospital. It'll be interesting when they finally sort an antibody test that works to find who has or hasn't actually had it.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/05/2020 23:08

If they need to submit stuff online, make sure they've got a decent amount of data available - DDs backup plan was to Bluetooth to her phone and use 4G, not sure if she had to use it for downloading/uploading her exams but it was one less thing to worry about. (Of course that assumes reasonable 4G connection in the area)

Carriemac · 21/05/2020 19:08

good tip Errol, living in the countryside this issue makes me nervous our broadband is occasionally patchy.

Horsemad · 22/05/2020 07:53

DS's last exam today and he's done! 😲

The time has flown by - remember our car breaking down an hour into the journey on the day we took him? 😆😆😆
What a palaver that was! Of all the days...

Good Luck to everyone still edging towards their degree. 🎓🎓🎓

latedecember1963 · 22/05/2020 09:12

Aww, fingers and toes crossed here in Lancashire for him, Horsemad! 👨‍🎓

latedecember1963 · 22/05/2020 09:14

Not sure where the random man with the 1970s moustache came from!

Stopyourhavering64 · 22/05/2020 10:02

Ds has completed all his assignments for the year...just his dissertation proposal to finalise and then he's hopefully coming home 🤞🏻....however will involve a 7 hr journey in 3 trains to Wales...he's also not seen his gf for 5 months , and no idea when he'll be able to see her as she's in another city 2 hrs away
Good news is that he was only 2 marks off a first for one of the modules which he thought he'd totally screwed up ,as his internet was down for a couple of days and he couldn't get the references he needed...he was delighted with this as he thought it was one of the weakest essays he'd done at Uni!...he's planning on carrying on with MSc once he's finished his BSc....but hopefully not so far away!

Xenia · 22/05/2020 10:40

Well done to those who have finished. One twin here is working very hard on his dissertation every day - not yet finished it and has an essay due too by early next week and finally a timed exam essay thing. The other has got his last normal essay in (and dissertation in at easter) so just has a time essay (in place of an exam) to come. It is the home stretch now here... They are both at home and I think one is driving his twin back to Bristol but not staying once that one is free and wants last period in the rented house until end of June when tenancy ends.

He also need to talk to his friends about travelling as one mentioned a masters instead and my son might do law after all (like his twin) - but all up in the air at the moment. The law school has places - he checked. I did suggest if that one does it in Bristol may be his twin should consider moving his course from London to Bristol too if he wants - I don't think it matters either way other than I would be paying Bristol rents for an extra year rather than if they lived at home.

Anyway no rush - they need to get exams/essays/dissertations done first and then talk to friends and the one who has not yet applied for the law course would need to get that submitted.

I agree with everyone that the 3 years have flown by. I suspect my 2 will have 2 years of law now - certainly one has his place (if he gets a 2/1 ) and is definite about it and the other may do so not quite the end of the studying era for this family quite yet. With no jobs for many and travelling potentially out further studying seems to be a trend for a lot of graduates anyway.

if they will be in Bristol then although it is a bit late to team up with friends and find a house I suspect there will be people wanting to pull out of houses due to CV19 for various reasons and if there is nothing they can always live at home and do the course as planned from here anyway, in London.

That's such good news about your son's mark Stopyourhavering. I think the uncertainty of how assessments will go is really playing on lots of peoples minds.
Hope his journey home goes smoothly. We're pining for Anglesey here. I'd normally be driving down the A55 today and looking forward to a lovely week in our caravan.

latedecember1963 · 22/05/2020 12:12

Pining for Anglesey.

Needmoresleep · 22/05/2020 13:10

We had a day trip to Bristol yesterday to collect DDs things, following on an earlier trip to collect things from placement.

We now have a very full living room. Too many things. But at least we managed to fit everything into the car, with the bike on the roof rack. I hope this will be a lesson in the virtues of minimalism.

I am shattered from driving and cleaning, but DD was able to say hello to a few friends from a social distance. Most have spare rooms, so if things lift further there would be scope For DD to stay with them over the summer, before a year of living at home Several are working in hospitals there, and suggest that the Covid peak is only just starting to hit the area. In London the sound of constant ambulance sirens is a receding memory.

We have a buyer for a small flat close to my late mother. I will need to go down to sort things out. It’s near a beach so that will have to be my holiday.

I think DD has exams at the start of June. She then has a six week placement, which was supposed to have been in France, but is now online. 70% of the options are around Covid19, and the rest are not particularly inspiring. She feels quite sorry for the medical school having to hunt round for topics.

Stopyourhavering64 · 22/05/2020 13:38

@latedecember1963 just waiting for Welsh Assembly to ease the travel restrictions and maybe I'll be able to hop over to Angelsey...although I've been shielding for last 10 weeks so haven't even seen beyond the garden!...however there's far worse places than Snowdonia to be quarantined in! ....hopefully you'll be able to visit soon - our local economy depends on tourism

Haffdonga · 22/05/2020 13:53

Congratulations to almost graduate Horsemad DS and Stopyourhavering DS for a cracking mark. Smile Star Smile Star

I guess Needmoresleep dd is relieved to be reunited with her possessions. DS tells me that many of his friends are planning to head back to their uni lodgings/ houses in the last week of June to do their packing up and moving houses, but it also sounds a bit like it will be a socially distanced get together and unofficial loosening of lockdown . They will have to get their stuff so I think it's inevitable and similar will be happening across the UK, despite that government minister (I forget which) helpfully suggesting that finishing students ask their landlords to keep hold of their belongings after the end of their tenancies for them. Like that's going to happen.

DS has just had to turn down one of the new 20,000 track and tracing jobs. It sounded ideal as it's working from home, phoning a list of people using a script checking how they are. He thought it would fit perfectly round his occasional online lectures but unfortunately the shifts are 8 hours solid over 6 days a week with no flexibility at all. The uni wont allow students to take jobs that conflict with lectures so it's a no.

RedHelenB · 22/05/2020 16:02

Hello everyone! Well done to all your children who have finished dexams and handed in dissertations. Dd1 has passed one exam and has another next week I think then she's going back to her uni house to clean and pack her remaining stuff. We got dd2s back on Sunday.

bigTillyMint · 22/05/2020 16:44

@Haffdonga how did your DS get the job?!

@Needmoresleep, good that you found a buyer but Sad if that’s your summer hol. Not that it looks that hopeful for anyone!

DD and I just went round to her besties to take flowers and fizz and say an SD congratulations on finishing her degree. Not quite the celebration really Confused

Haffdonga · 22/05/2020 16:53

@bigTillyMint The jobs were advertised on Indeed about a month ago through various recruitment agencies. I think the job title was something like customer service representative but I can't see any there now, sorry. (He had to download some software to check his IT was of good enough spec to handle it and heard nothing until 2 days ago).

Worth keeping an eye open for more slots to be opened up.

bigTillyMint · 22/05/2020 17:47

Thanks - I’ll warn the DC!
