Continuation of www.mumsnet.com/Talk/higher_education/3538808-heading-towards-year-2-exams-uni-2017 as we have reached page 40.

Hard to believe they are all in year 3 now and many will finish university in June 2020.

DS is finished too. We need to go back and pick up his stuff at some point once the Welsh govt lifts lockdown but there’s nothing of any real value there.

For those with DC needing a job I recommend keeping an eye on the NHS jobs site. All nhs jobs on one site, except NHS Scotland has its own. Jobs that might be suitable pop up, and they can go quite quickly so it's important to check regularly.
To give an idea of variety - whilst my DD has been spending her gap year working as an HCA in the theatre Dept, a classmate of hers is working as a ward clerk. We have a new porter in our dept, same age, A levels last summer. And I was having a chat with another gap year HCA yesterday who is working in the radiology dept. Another of her friends works as a kitchen porter, delivering meals up to the wards and things. She loves her job and I was impressed with her learning on food safety etc.
Those sorts of jobs are well removed from the grind of being an HCA on the ward, which I would only really recommend for someone with an interest in nursing or med. school.
Also various clerical jobs, HR apprenticeship, IT jobs that would suit pop up.
All these teens are loving having regular, relatively well paid work with paid annual leave etc. and being part of the NHS team.
There's lots of useful skills and training that all new NHS employees get like resuscitation training, manual handling, conflict resolution, information governance, dementia training. My DD really enjoyed most of her mandatory training, and she had been out of school just long enough to rather appreciate being back in a class room.
With all the regular hospitality and shop jobs gone I know lots are feeling at a loose end.
They might find something they enjoy and it'll be really useful life experience.

Several reception type jobs and a pharmacy assistant in my hospital at present.
Pharmacy assistant job would suit someone with science qualifications and interest. But no specific qualification called for, train for NVQ on the job.

That's it, mine is done! I spoke to him about an hour ago, he said he was off to the shops for some booze! 😲😆

RedHelenB · 23/05/2020 17:54

Congrats to Horsemad s son!

Horsemad · 23/05/2020 18:14

Thanks @RedHelenB 🙂 Good Luck to your DD for her exam next week and to everyone else still going through these last weeks.

bigTillyMint · 23/05/2020 19:55

Congratulations to your DS @Horsemad Wine

ErrolTheDragon · 23/05/2020 21:45

DD and her BF arrived safely on Thursday, promptly got their machines set up and were down to work - she had a deadline that evening for a report on her 'lab' project, they've both been beavering away. They and a few others are looking for a house to rent for next year as they don't know what the rules in their various colleges will be (I don't suppose the colleges do either as it will depend how national rules evolve). So they're finding out rather later than most students about the joys of house hunting - but from a distance.

Horsemad · 23/05/2020 21:53

Cheers bTM - I had a glass of fizz to celebrate him finishing, whilst we video called him earlier. 😃

Glad your DD & BF arrived safely Errol. Happy househunting to them!

Carriemac · 25/05/2020 10:04

Well done horsemads DS ! One week to the start of DDs exams here and the tension is mounting

goodbyestranger · 25/05/2020 10:20

DS4 doing his final final now, up in Durham then that's it.

Xenia · 25/05/2020 11:13

Well done to DS4 finishing..... one of mine is wishing he had not got extensions of time on his essay and then his dissertation as it is all being spun out so long - I think essay goes in today and dissertation in a week. Then that leaves both twins just with one timed exam essay. Then one might be driven back to Bristol by his twin as he wants the end of term with housemates once every bit of work and exams is over. I really want him to speak to them because we have some quite complicated future things to discuss which seem to be like a jigsaw puzzle.

Eg if he does law like his twin and doesn't do that gap year - as probably he cannot travel but again needs to discuss with his travel companions..... will they be doing masters inBristol so he would do law there and might his twin then also live in Bristol instead of London for the course for which he already has a place (it is easy to switch). However one (but not the other) is not sure he would want to be in London only with me (his twin is not bothered) and I think they have a very close school friend from home who might well be doing the same law course in London.

Everything seems to hinge on what friends are doing who don't seem to have made up their minds. If both do live in Bristol next year they also need to find housemates and a house. I suspect both may end up living at home and doing law in London. I am not against both in Bristol or one however although I would then have rent to pay..

Anyway the sequence of events is 1. get all course work/exams over. 2. discuss all this with relevant friends/housemates/gap year travellers 3. then the one not yet registered for it applies for the law course (he is certain he does not want to do a masters instead) at either London or Bristol and 4 if Bristol one or both of the twins find accommodation there. And I want all that done by or in June if they can as one will need his tutor's reference etc for law before people disappear for summer holidays and I want certainly - will I be having the nirvana of living alone again for a year or will I have the delights or one or two twins in the house..... Either is fine and we all get on fine but I like to know where I stand and what I will have to pay.

I'm the same @Xenia, I just want DS to decide if he's applying to do a Masters & staying put (will need new accommodation though) or coming home and job hunting.

I've told him to have a week lounging around and then start thinking.
We spoke to him yesterday and he felt 'strange' because he had no studying to do! 😆

Thank you @Carriemac, I hope your Dad's exams go well.

And @goodbyestranger, best of luck to your DS4 too.

Horsemad · 25/05/2020 11:20

*DD's exams !!

Haffdonga · 25/05/2020 11:56

Congratulations Horsemad DS Flowers

There seems to be quite a meme going round of people photographing themselves from bedrooms pressing send on a final exam or dissertation and saying Well that's university finished for me. So flat and disappointing for them after all the hard work not to be able to celebrate in the usual style Wink.

Like your dss Xenia and Horse, there also seems to be huge doubts among so many about what they'll actually do next year. The masters or further qualification route seems a good way of avoiding unemployment in the coming months. But do they actually want to do a masters and commit to renting student houses if it is all going to be online learning with no face to face contact anyway? DS is still hedging his bets on his intercalation next year. The masters he's got a place on is clinical, with lots of patient contact. If that doesn't seem to be what will happen then he may just go back and do his straight 4th year.

Fingers crossed for a vaccine that works. That could be a real game changer for us all.

ErrolTheDragon · 25/05/2020 12:08

The paper today was saying there's now a bit of a problem testing the Bristol vaccine because there aren't enough cases of CV in the U.K. at the moment. I'd thought they were thinking earlier on they might have to do that phase abroad.

So much anticlimax and uncertainty, it is tough for them. DD is fortunate that, even though it may not be exactly as anticipated she's got another year to go anyway.

Horsemad · 25/05/2020 12:14

I'd heard that too about the vaccine Errol.

Haffdonga · 25/05/2020 12:23

DS was invited to volunteer on a big roll out of vaccine testing happening in Sheffield next week and the week after. In the end he decided not to, because of logistics involving travel and relocating etc. All he would have been doing (as a lowly 3rd year) was meet people at the hospital entrance and escort them to the correct department. The higher years will be taking the bloods etc.

But it appears they are to be testing in several parts of the country.

Xenia · 25/05/2020 12:37

One of my twins is sure about law and applied for his place last October so that's pretty clear - he is registered for London but I did offer him the chance to go in Bristol instead if he prefers as I was offering his twin that option. he is not sure and it is also complicated by his girl friend too who may now do a masters instead of getting a job. This is why it is like some awful puzzle computer programs or deputy heads have to do in working out a time table - so many other people's children have an impact on where mine will be. The main thing the other twin needs to agree with his friends is travelling in Jan 2021 is a very bad idea and hanging around doing nothing all year just in the hope full flights may be on is off the table. I don't really see why he cannot agree that with them now but he is not keen to pull out and let them down but covid 19 is hardly his fault. His sister had a lovely gap year working abroad after law school and before her first trainee solicitor job.

I agree with the point a bove about on line courses in Sept. The law one is likely to start on line and has had an on line option for years anyway so is all set up for that. I hope they would then move to some seminars just as oxbridge is planning to hold the small groups in Ot not the big ones and in a way law is a means to an end - exams in Dec and exams in April 2020 and then you are free until the LPC course in the Autumn but it is hard continuous work and they might find that easier at home than with friends doing perhaps more relaxed or very different masters type courses.

Dd1 has done her final exam of the year and it was"fine" She seems to be good at knowing how these thingames e so can relax. She's going back to Newcastle to tidy the house and pack her remaining stuff at the end of the week , i ll pick her up in a week or so. Hopefully by September they'll be able to practice dentistry again.

Horsemad · 26/05/2020 23:42

Aww, I hope your DD can get back to dentistry again later this year, @RedHelenB. Wishing her a relaxing summer break. 🙂

RedHelenB · 27/05/2020 08:09

One good thing @Horsemad is she will get the long summer break. Originally it was only going to be 6 weeks. Apparently friends parents who are dentists are talking about opening up again end of July , but not clear whether any treatment requiring an electric handpiece will be allowed due to the need for aerosols.

hellsbells99 · 27/05/2020 08:33

Well done to all those who have finished. DD has her first online exam today - she is still in bed at the moment! 48hours to complete it so she is not rushing to start it 😳

latedecember1963 · 27/05/2020 09:40

Well done to all those who have now completed the year.
When my mum had her check up in March the dentist said she needed a small filling and made her an appointment to come back which is now on hold. Mum was convinced he would only be closed for a few weeks but I pointed out he would need arms as long as Mr Tickle to be able to treat her at 2 metres. A proper rest is a nice unexpected bonus for your daughter, RedHelenB.
Our niece who is a dentist in Queensland was able to go back to work a couple of weeks ago, but Australia seems to have contained things very well.
