Previous thread and hope you don't mind that I set up the next thread @juicy0. Just did it to ensure that we carry on chatting seamlessly Wink

I did speak to someone at the council some time ago @boys3 before DS was 18 as I wondered what would happen if he was living away, and they told me to inform them when he started uni as he would be counted as living away from home and I could claim the discount again. The bill was increased automatically when he turned 18 and clearly I didn't read the letter they sent me at the time because, looking at it now, I can see it says to contact them if he's still in full time education. What an idiot I am! I doubt they will make any back payment but, thanks to Mumsnet, at least I will be able to claim the discount going forwards. Hooray! Every little helps.

Itscoldouthere · 08/10/2019 23:09

@icanbewhatiwant well we can tell each other what they are up to, secret biology spying Grin
DS2 sent a photo on the family group of his supper, steak and fries, DS1 replied straight back ‘you’re a student you can’t afford steak’, but DS2 says he can because he doesn’t drink and it cost less than a pint of beer !
Glad to see he’s moved on from the pot noodle pizza.

icanbewhatiwant · 09/10/2019 09:53

@Itscoldouthere ds didn't ask how I knew he'd been on a field trip. He knows I'll say mumsnet (no doubt rolling his eyes at the thought)

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 09/10/2019 10:01

Not sure about your DC, but DS is annoyed that MN is a 'grapevine' for info on what's going down!

OP posts:
Itscoldouthere · 09/10/2019 14:54

My DS also rolls his eyes and knows it’s mumsnet Smile

CointreauVersial · 10/10/2019 13:18

DD1 thinks it's hilarious that we have this thread, particularly when I can find out the answers to problems before she can herself!

No more news from her, except a moan that she's run out of drawing pins. Hmm And she's still finding the course a bit dull, because she hasn't learned anything new yet - it's still all recapping the A Level.

icanbewhatiwant · 10/10/2019 15:36

I haven't heard anything much from ds. He is coming home though, tomorrow evening. He wants to join the last clay pigeon shoot of the season. Dh will drop him back Sunday after the shoot. So hopefully I'll hear more on what he's been up to the last few weeks.
(Incase anyone was wondering he only shoots clays...no live animals involved!)

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 10/10/2019 16:53

DD also does lots of eye rolling re "Mumsnet says" but we have both gotten lots of good tips from this thread so she's quietened down a bit...

We are going this weekend mostly to bring the dog as it's her birthday tomorrow and she's feeling a teensy bit homesick about it.

I think she's finding it's hard to have such an early birthday with new friends but I have managed to contact one of the flatmates who DD is very close with and have sent a cake, banner etc to the flatmate as a surprise for DD for the flat/friends to have cake and a bit of a celebration.

icanbewhatiwant · 10/10/2019 17:12

@mumsiedarlingrevolta that's a lovely idea about the cake. Ds's birthday isn't until May. So first year will be almost over by then. Yes we have learnt lots from this thread too and the other university one. I've kept clear of the backpack one though.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 10/10/2019 17:32

oooh @icanbewhatiwant what's the backpack one??

and always hard to be first birthday at a new school so had to get creative Grin

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 10/10/2019 17:46

Hoping the psychology will pick up soon for your DD @CointreauVersial.

Oh the backpack thread is a true classic @mumsiedarlingrevolta. You must have a read. Started by @Shimy (I think) in all innocence - got shot down for babying DC by deigning to want to choose a good quality, robust rucksack for them. There is a new 'to backpack' verb being used quite liberally on the general 'university' thread! Mind you it does give some very good suggestions for good backpacks.

On a more positive note, what a lovely idea for your DD's birthday @mumsiedarlingrevolta! Happy birthday to her!

CointreauVersial · 10/10/2019 19:59

Oh yes, the backpack thread was an absolute treat.....

Of course, we UEA parents are FAR too nice to have a go at someone for buying their teen a backpack. Wink

Shimy · 10/10/2019 20:36

Yes, it was the thread that just kept giving Wink.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 10/10/2019 20:55

How could I have missed the backpack thread as it seems I spend far too much of my day perusing mumsnet at the exclusion of everything else

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 10/10/2019 21:02

And @NewModelArmyMayhem18 thank you for the birthday wishes for DD.

Looking forward to our weekend in Norwich so much! Just need to find dog friendly pub for dinner saturday night. Grin

Itscoldouthere · 10/10/2019 21:36

Happy Birthday to your DD @mumsiedarlingrevolta so lovely to think of sending a cake.
We are off to visit DS1 in Bournemouth this weekend, but it’s actually DS2 at UEA I worry about more, I’d like to see him next weekend by I not sure if DH will be around, if he isn’t I might just go up for the day, I haven’t seen his halls so can’t fully picture his life and he doesn’t keep in touch that often, a couple of texts a week.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 10/10/2019 21:51

@Itscoldouthere thank you. DD is always the one who plans and organises everyone else's nice birthday and it's early days so wanted her to have a bit of a fuss.

Please let me know if I can look out for stalk any of your DC and report back Wink

Itscoldouthere · 10/10/2019 21:54

@mumsiedarlingrevolta l’d like to know if you find a good dog friendly pub, I’ll definately be taking the dog when I go up to visit, he’s very missed, by both D.C.
What type of dog do you have?

cocomelon23 · 10/10/2019 22:03

The Eagle is dog friendly Smile

GoldenRuby · 10/10/2019 22:21

@mumsiedarlingrevolta we are visiting on the 26th with our dog, and have booked at table at Mr Pickwick (previously Earlham Arms) - which in on/just off the main road from the uni into the city I believe. They are dog friendly.

boys3 · 10/10/2019 22:53

going across to see DS2 on Sunday. Looking for somewhere to head out to lunch - probably not the city centre and somewhere with a wider menu than the typical sunday roast offerings. Any ideas greatly appreciated - already about to look at Mr Pickwick and The Eagle as both mentioned above.

juicy0 · 11/10/2019 06:19

Norwich has lots of lovely pubs both within the city and surrounding villages if you're prepared to drive out. We took our dog to The Eagle last Sunday and enjoyed a nice lunch but there is a good list here:

www.doggiepubs.org.uk/the_pubs.php?searchtown=Nr4&lat=52.6054482&long=1.2412014999999883&view=list

The Kings Head at Bawburgh is also fabulous and dogs are allowed in the bar area so be sure to book there rather than the restaurant.

Enjoy your weekend visits everyone x

MrsBartlet · 11/10/2019 08:45

Very pleased to see suggestions for dog friendly pubs as we are going to visit ds next Sunday for his birthday and taking the dog. We don't want to have to drive too far from campus though as we have a 2 hour drive each way as it is and ddog doesn't love being in the car!

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 11/10/2019 12:26

Thanks for all the dog friendly suggestions-

will report back after the weekend. Wine

Thanks for all the birthday wishes for DD.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 11/10/2019 18:09

@cocomelon23 @MrsBartlet

We have booked The Eagle and will review after... Wine
