Good evening,

I am currently studying an access to higher education course and for it require to draft a personal statement for UCAS applications at the end of the year however I have never done this before.

What should I include and how should I start?

I am wanting to study an adult nursing course if that helps

TIA Grin

A personal statement is personal so there's no formula - whatever you do don't copy or adapt closely from any examples you might find online. One approach is to essentially tell the story of how you became interested in the subject you want to study, with examples of relevant experience along the way.

Lots of university websites have good advice about what kind of thing to include. If you are going to open days they often have talks or leaflets available with advice on this too.

What universities don't want is students who drop out or lose interest, so the personal statement is your chance to show that you are well suited to this course and likely to do well. So give examples of things you have done that demonstrate your interest in this degree, your ability to work hard, relevant work experience and volunteering, other experiences or achievements that demonstrate relevant qualities like teamwork, etc.

If you look on thestudentroom or google "adult nursing UCAS personal statement" you'll find lots of suggestions and example statements which might give you some idea of what is expected, but, as Errol says, there is no formula.

A lot of universities have guidance on their websites about what they are interested in finding out about you. We've also found that open days tend to have info sheets to help with writing one. Try this link:

www.york.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/applying/how-to-apply/personal-statement/ which has further helpful links.

I hope this will attach and that you can read it.
