Might have already been mentioned as haven't RTFT, but paracetamol or cold/flu capsules for the inevitable freshers flu and of course hangover cure... those powders you put in water.

It won't be obvious till they've moved in whether some of the items suggested are necessary or not (if they're even allowed), and how much space they've got.

They will very probably acquire more stuff while they're there...uni towns have shops.

SirTobyBelch · 12/09/2019 06:35

Toilet paper
Laundry detergent
Extension leads

GCAcademic · 12/09/2019 06:43

Reusable water bottle.

indianbackground · 12/09/2019 06:59

If see gets prescribed medication see if GP will prescribe some extra so going to new GP isn’t as urgent.

Paper towels
Tissues
Folder of any paper documents eg offers from uni, Accommodation offer, maybe birth certificate

Assuming she's going in halls on campus, most unis will provide a list of what's included. Due to fire regs/H&S, no candles, incense sticks etc, kettles & toasters usually provided.
Slow cooker & student cook book will help with cooking.
There's usually notice board for posters etc in room but she can use command stickers to put up more, without marking walls.
(I look after on/off campus rooms and have to charge ppl for damages, such as marking walls).
Also heat proof mat for hair straighteners /curlers, so carpet doesn't get burnt. Make sure she knows to use the ironing board, not just iron on the floor or bed, as she could get charged for burns.
Less practice but a few things to make her room feel more personal & homely- plants, photos in frames, favourite throw, rug.

Anything she may need for cooking, the appliances are provided but nothing else - so baking trays or such for cooking in oven, as well as pans.

Cheese grater, jugs, cutlery of all types, including knife, tin opener etc (a colleague whose eldest is heading off, actually asked me if she needed her own cutlery this week!)

My DS used his drying rack constantly, was easier than using uni dryers. He batched cooked, so found plastic containers useful for that and just generally storing fridge food in.

VanCleefArpels · 12/09/2019 08:06

Clothes hangers

Mattress protector

(I think you’ve got too many pans btw, what dish that a student is likely to cook requires 3 pans and a frying pan used all at once? Space is v limited, one pan and one skillet type with a lid is more than enough)

kellyw1989 · 12/09/2019 08:15

Condoms free as freshers as I found out after buying loads lol

ErrolTheDragon · 12/09/2019 08:20

Not sure if it's been mentioned but a lot of student laundries specify liquid detergent only (I think it's less likely to cause blockages) so liquitabs not solid ones or powder.

Trewser · 12/09/2019 10:47

This is all amazing.

She is a keen cook so the pans were her request but I agree four is too many. I might wrestle her down to three, one for pasta water, one for making sauce, one small omelette pan.

I think DD has a frying pan and a small and medium saucepan. The latter is big enough for pasta and has a steamer insert so she can do veg at the same time.
Fortunately the cookers in her accommodation aren't induction so she had her pick of my old pans I'd kept for this purpose when I had the kitchen redone a few years ago but apparently a few places do have induction hobs

Bear in mind that kitchen cupboard space may be tight, as may fridge space and they may not have a freezer

Trewser · 12/09/2019 11:05

She is taking her own one ring induction hob Grin not sure she'll have room but we'll see

I hadn't realised how well off we were when dd went to Newcastle as all pots & pans, plates, cutlery etc were provided. She just took a mug, a glass and her Nutribullet for kitchen equipment.

hellsbells99 · 12/09/2019 14:11

DD is now going into her 4th year. She has a 'saute' pan with a lid and 1 other pan for pasta etc. She cooks nearly everything in her saute pan - stir frys, chillis, currys etc. We bought her the pan at the beginning of her 2nd year and it has been very well used - including by all 8 members of the house in year 2. We bought it from Costco for less than £20 I think. But it was similar to this one from Tesco

What has dd forgotten to pack for uni?!
Trewser · 13/09/2019 12:23

Great, I bought her a saute pan and sneaked one of my pans back!

She has bought a few books from the reading list but is going to see what's in the library before she spends too much.

A few printed out photos of mates/family.
Those magnetic fridge words (preferably the rude version).
Card games (cards against Humanity).
File of important stuff like passwords to Student finance and Tel numbers.
Vodka.

Serin · 13/09/2019 16:36

Oooh! Forgot to say, non stick baking paper to line trays with because they are never going to scrub the burned on peri peri sauce off the tray are they?

simbobs · 13/09/2019 18:56

Good idea, serin.
