Cold weather stuff (hat, gloves and scarf)

Wet weather stuff (umbrella and wellies)

GinandManic · 11/09/2019 15:22

Pins for pin board
Foldable storage boxes.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/09/2019 15:34

Bike - does she have helmet, something hi viz to wear, lights, small toolkit/multitool, and locks - a good D lock plus smaller one for the front wheel.

A multitool is quite handy anyway, like a Swiss Army knife but with more screwdrivers/Allan keys, fewer knives.

Has anyone mentioned earplugs?

stayathomegardener · 11/09/2019 16:04

Kitchen towel
Dettol spray
Stamps
Recipes from home
Cook book.

A smallish clothes maiden was a godsend for me- washing is expensive so being able to hand wash and hang bits out or bring wet clothes back and hang in room saved me £2.50 in a tumble dryer and our halls were always boiling so clothes dried easily!

Argos list is useful

We are having an argument about a waterproof coat

She wants a madly fashionable one that costs 100

I say she needs an outdoorsy one (40) she refuses.

Ive said I'll give her 40 towards the coat but she doesnt think she should spend her own money on it Hmm

A small glass Pyrex jug with handle - can microwave noodles / beans in and eat it straight out!
Little first aid kit - freshers flu will hit hard, lemsips and painkillers, strepsils!
Focus on food that is so so easy to make. It almost felt a bit awkward to eat the first week - so stuff on toast / noodles / oven pizza will work. Longer term you find tome to cook but not in week one
Clothes drying rack
Large plastic beakers - glasses smash and you don't want them dropped in your room
Lanyard can be handy to ensure keys / swipe cards aren't lost
Ice breakers- box of homemade cookies / a lasagne to chuck in the oven for Flatmate's / funky spirit to share shots / pics to stick on door / glitter for first night face paint etc
Waterproof stuff - decent coat / brolly / shoes as lots of walking to save money

StoatofDisarray · 11/09/2019 16:36

First aid stuff.

Breathlessness · 11/09/2019 16:36

Grin Off to University and you’re still arguing over suitable coats. It’s not that different to Yr7 - all the shiny, new kit laid out.

Trewser · 11/09/2019 16:37

Fab chilisauce! Plastic beakers on the list plus pyrex jug!

Must get a first aid kit tigether i know she will forget

I know, its pathetic

Just tell her to sort her own coat from maintenance loan/your contribution. Her choice.

Trewser · 11/09/2019 16:44

Yeah i have. Still hoping she'll nip down to blacks and buy a nice practical waterproof for cycling in! Dream on!

Useful thread for those of us whose dc not even started to think about any of this yet! I know that neither of my dc allowed candles btw, as fire hazard, so a reed diffuser if you are looking for room smellies.

FunderAnna · 11/09/2019 16:46

No candles. Fire risk (Probably not allowed.)

Trewser · 11/09/2019 16:47

No candles allowed. Nothing on the walls either, sad times.

simbobs · 11/09/2019 16:53

Mine also not allowed to put tings on walls and I don't know whether pinboard big enough for posters, but doubt it. I'd rather he had his timetable on there. And a pic of the dog.

SpockPaperScissorsLizardRock · 11/09/2019 16:57

Box of biscuits/ sweets to share. Good ice-breaker.

daisypond · 11/09/2019 17:08

Clothes airer.
Mine wasn’t allowed to take toaster, kettle or anything like that.
Depending on how much cooking she’ll do - mine is keen - a stick blender.
Padlock for locker.

Pebbles574 · 11/09/2019 17:18

DS (going into Year 2 now) says:

  • washing powder/ capsules etc (as ones to buy in halls are vv expensive)
  • a small tray for carrying food/ drinks from kitchen to room and between rooms
  • dressing gown
  • big laundry bag for lugging dirty clothes to laundry
  • paracetamol/ Rennies/ antiseptic cream etc
(He says don't bother buying condoms as the unis are simply overflowing with them at Freshers Hmm )
ellzebellze · 11/09/2019 17:47

Scissors

FunderAnna · 11/09/2019 17:48

I think reed diffusers are for middle-aged people with posh toilets. Not students whose rooms smell of cosmetics and/or trainers and/or the plate of food that got pushed under the bed and forgotten about.

springtime12 · 11/09/2019 17:59

Small emergency sewing kit
Iron n ironing board if not provided
