Forced deferral

I am supposed to be starting a health degree in a couple of weeks, which needs occupational health clearance. I have a disability (mh) so was expecting the occupational health doctor to recommend reasonable adjustments so I can study. Instead it has been recommended that I defer for a year. The doctor unfortunately was only interested in my history and not how I am doing now. This is my second degree so I am a mature student, and don’t really have the time/money to defer. I have a meeting with the university to discuss what occupational health have recommended. Do you think there’s any chance the university will admit me this year once they see I am well enough? If the plan is to make me defer shouldn’t they just tell me over email?

I would have thought if occ health clearance is a requirement then the university will take their lead and say you should wait. The university really would not be in any position to deem you 'well' just by meeting you once. I assume that this degree has clinical placements from year 1? If so I can only assume that the doctor felt that your MH history was still too recent and deferring would be in your best interest. What adjustments were you hoping would be made/required?

Hi there.

Do you regularly see a specialist (or even GP) who would be able to provide a different opinion and suggest adjustments? If so then consider contacting the Uni and asking how you should submit evidence, and whether there are any forms (possibly appeal forms) you need to complete.

Best,
P
