Gap Year

My DS is about the start Year 13 and is pretty adamant he wants to take a gap year. I think my question might be overly simple but, given he's sure, what are the benefits of going through UCAS this year and trying to defer to entry 2021 versus just applying with his actual A levels next year.
Also - if her applies this year is it better to apply for a place in 2021 or get an offer for 2020 and then request a deferment?
Sorry if all this seems obvious.....

Most don't interview so applying after A levels shouldn't interfere with any gap year plans. I would look around possible unis this autumn though.

This was the situation my son was in as he went into year 13. He applied for deferred places and got 4 out of 5 offers. The thinking was that if it didn't work out he could apply again the following year.

On results day 2018 he got his place confirmed for 2019 and as we speak is coming to the end of an amazing year, most of which he has spent abroad. He got a priority booking period for halls which meant he got his first choice in a very stress-free process back in February.

For him it couldn't have worked out better.

We are in the same position and asked at Ooen days . In summary for English ; York and Durham both said apply for 2020 and ask for a deferral when you get results ( this surprised us and feels a bit dishonest but they both said this was ok ) . Bristol didn’t care apply deferred seemed to o be the general advice, Oxford and St. Andrews would consider deferred but strongly advised waiting and applying in the year of entry . So ds is still un decided , I think he may wait until after A levels as he is still unsure about subject.

DC decided late to take a gap year and Manchester was happy to defer their place. It takes the pressure off gap year plans knowing you have a place secured. Although meeting people and travelling, they might change their mind and choice of course/uni, which is absolutely fine.

That is what a gap year is for. To take stock and step of the educational conveyor belt, gain other skills and grow/mature.

DD always knew she wanted a gap year but did complete the ucas application in year 13 as that’s when the school offer lots of support and guidance.
She will be applying again this year but will tweak the PS she wrote to include activities from Dec18 to Autumn 19 that are relevant, plus she has checked with her school and they are happy to provide support and references even though she’s now left.
