I've never done this before but hopefully I have managed to set up a new thread for UEA specific posts.
Perhaps someone can let me know if it's worked!

In the accommodation booklet email it suggests at least £10 week for bills. I don't think they pay council tax do they? I guess it depends how many there are sharing a house.

NotSorry · 11/09/2019 13:43

students don't pay council tax

I would like my ds to work while at university. But I know he won't want to. He has worked all summer but only because dh found him a summer job. He is working right up until next Friday. But I know he thinks he's "done" with work!

CharliesMouse · 11/09/2019 19:28

Does anyone know if there is a shaving point in the ensuite accommodation rooms? I can't see one mentioned anywhere. I'm thinking about DS's electric toothbrush. I might get him a plug in adapter just in case

NotSorry · 11/09/2019 20:32

oh yes I wondered that CharliesMouse for the same reason

sluj · 11/09/2019 21:07

DS1 said there was definitely a shaving point in the Village 3 years ago so I should imagine they all have one.

CharliesMouse · 12/09/2019 07:50

Oh that's great, thanks @sluj (and son)

Missyelliottsaysso · 12/09/2019 07:52

Sorry if this has been asked before but anyone know what time we can start moving into accommodation. My DD has been told Sun 22nd and was just thinking about logistics of all the parents in very limited parking.

icanbewhatiwant · 12/09/2019 08:10

@Missyelliottsaysso it just says from 10am. Not sure if it's better that we don't have a time slot like the other universities have or not. Everyone could turn up at the same time.

CointreauVersial · 12/09/2019 13:31

DD1 has at last gone into FB and made contact with her new flatmates. Not sure how much "chat" has gone on, but at least she has names and photographs.

icanbewhatiwant · 12/09/2019 14:05

I don't think there is a way of telling how many are in the flat. On ds's Facebook chat there are 7 girls and 3 boys. He would like there to be another boy really. He doesn't find it easy talking to girls, so hopefully he will get used to it. One lad is from Delhi he flew to the Uk last weekend, the other is called Prakash so we are assuming he or his family have Indian origins too. It will be great for him to meet people from other cultures. We have 101 children in our local primary school and only one doesn't have white skin (though the parents are British) So meeting lots of people from other cultures will definitely be a plus.

Missyelliottsaysso · 12/09/2019 14:11

@icanbewhatiwant thanks, I bet it’s going to be super busy.
My DD was a bit worried that she’s only met 2 other girls through Facebook, no one else, and they are both really nice but seem really quiet.
She is quite outgoing so was hoping for a similar flatmates...I said at least she can get her studying done in peace and quiet.

CointreauVersial · 12/09/2019 14:42

@icanbewhatiwant - DD1 is in Room F, so I calculate there will be at least six in her flat. Grin

icanbewhatiwant · 12/09/2019 15:07

Ours is (PH) 18H flats 11-20 so if H is the number inside the flat and it starts a A then there are at least 8 of them. But if 11-20 are the numbers inside the flats then that would make 10 I have no idea what the numbers mean. We will find out soon enough.

icanbewhatiwant · 12/09/2019 15:08

I would think if he's flat 18 then 11-20 is the block number.

NotSorry · 12/09/2019 16:08

PH18H is Paston House - block 18 - flat H - according to my DS

NotSorry · 12/09/2019 16:09

Sorry! Flat 18 - room H

He could be wrong though Grin

icanbewhatiwant · 12/09/2019 16:23

@NotSorry yes that would make sense. Thanks. So at least 8 in his flat. But we knew that already as more than 8 in the chat group.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 12/09/2019 20:54

the other is called Prakash so we are assuming he or his family have Indian origins too. DS went to a grammar school and many of his friends have SE Asian roots. I have advised him that he may find UEA more mono-cultural than he is used to.

icanbewhatiwant · 13/09/2019 07:24

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 yes as I've said before...we aren't that far from UEA and we don't see many people from Africa/Asia etc. We have a lot of Eastern European's in the bigger towns. But not many in the villages. I think you are right in that there possibly won't be that many at UEA compared to other universities.
My son would like to meet more from other countries and cultures.

sluj · 13/09/2019 07:46

I think you might be pleasantly surprised by the student diversity at UEA. DS1 has a large proportion of SE Asian students on his course and had made friends with people from all over the world, from Nepal to Canada. He has even met some Mancunians 😁 Like me, he loves hearing different accents ❤

icanbewhatiwant · 13/09/2019 08:24

@sluj that will be great. Not many accents round here apart from Norfolk/Suffolk. Being from Surrey myself the local accent always makes me smile. If I meet a farmer or someone with a very strong local accent I often find it hard to understand.

MrsBartlet · 13/09/2019 10:40

Ds has finally chosen his modules (deadline is today) and I have signed up to be the person paying the accommodation bills. I have been away at a conference this week so don't really feel on top of things in terms of preparation for him leaving so need to get organised this weekend.

He went out for a big night out on Wednesday as some of his friends go this weekend. It is all getting a bit real now!
