I've never done this before but hopefully I have managed to set up a new thread for UEA specific posts.
Perhaps someone can let me know if it's worked!

Apologies for the misinformation @icanbewhatiwant Blush. Clearly I would go to the bottom of the class for not reading the info as thoroughly as I should have done. Mind you, I still think it's much more likely that they'd lose it when out and about. I would imagine that most will be taking theirs with them to lectures etc... DS used to take his to school with him much of the time.

Well done to your DD @ContreauVersial. Was she happy with her photo in the end?

Itscoldouthere · 09/09/2019 18:21

DS is still away in Berlin, I’ll have to give him a serious nudge when he comes back as I know he didn’t manage to upload his passport photo before he left !

icanbewhatiwant · 09/09/2019 19:37

I noticed on last nights email that a mattress protector is included. I'll still send another though.

GoldenRuby · 10/09/2019 08:21

Well our itinerary for the 21st is now sorted. Leaving home at 7/7.30 (car packed the night before), aiming to arrive as soon after 10 as possible. May take a breakfast stop enroute. Register then help DS unpack. Then off to watch DS play in a hockey match at the Sportspark at 2. He has a vague connection to one of the team, and at the start of the season before trials they are short of players, but as they knew he was coming they have reached out to him. Will be a great way to get started. He has messaged his flat mates to tell them he will be out for a few hours in the afternoon, but will be back for drinks/games late afternoon.

CointreauVersial · 10/09/2019 10:48

Blimey, GoldenRuby, in with both feet!

sluj · 10/09/2019 13:15

You are very organised Goldenruby. Sounds like a great start.
I am planning on spending some of the weekend, taking the packaging off all the new stuff so he doesn't have to fill the flat kitchen recycling bin.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 10/09/2019 16:13

That sounds like the perfect way to start for your DS @GoldenRuby. A baptism by fire but he will probably really feel part of the university within hours of arriving.

I am busy taking everything out of wrappers at this end @Sluj to save on weight for travelling by public transport.

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 wrt jobs DS2 worked in Wetherspoons when he was at UEA. There's 2 in the city, iirc, the jobs are usually on the website. They get reduced food on shift there, and slightly above NMW. DS2 was a student nurse and they were really flexible round his ward shifts.

His friend worked in Game, another friend worked in one of the coffee shops, another one in the LCR on Campus and his girlfriend worked in Next.

HTH.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 10/09/2019 17:38

Hi @TheFairyCaravan that's jolly useful to know. Many thanks!

Also some of the smaller independent shops tend to advertise on their Instagram page or still put signs up in the window it's worth following them online and having a CV to drop into shops when they see an advert.
Bicycle shop (who also run the cafe in the park next to the campus and run bars at the annual arts festival) is one and Elm is another I've seen. Also Jarrolds our local department store is well known for employing students and they're currently looking for casual Christmas staff.

Looking at the other ‘going to uni thread’ someone has just brought up securing a house for second year. Does anyone know how quickly it needs to be looked into in Norwich, I hear that in Bath and Bristol you need to get on to it straight away, almost before you have established proper friendship groups. I’m hoping it will be a bit more relaxed/easier in Norwich.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 10/09/2019 19:03

I've heard after Christmas is the time to start looking for second year accommodation. It's all so full-on isn't it?

icanbewhatiwant · 10/09/2019 19:17

Yes the email they received a few days ago tells about finding somewhere just after Christmas. There is a group at UEA that help the students find accommodation.

boys3 · 10/09/2019 20:03

there's also a section in the accommodation handbook on 2nd year living out

TheFairyCaravan · 10/09/2019 20:04

@Itscoldouthere DS2 sorted his house out for his second year just after Christmas. He ended up staying there for the third year, too in the end. Some of the girls were more organised and started looking October/November time.

boys3 · 10/09/2019 20:08

from page 26

Most rooms are in houses which share bathroom facilities, although you will find some en suite options. Rents vary, but the average is around £75 per person, per week exclusive of bills, depending on the size and condition of the rooms and the house. Be prepared to pay more for en suite accommodation

boys3 · 10/09/2019 20:13

www.homerunstudentpad.co.uk/Accommodation run by / in conjunction with the Student Union

TheFairyCaravan · 10/09/2019 20:16

DS2 paid about £77 a week for his double room in his house share. It was a mid terrace, 2 double bedrooms and a single upstairs and the front reception was used as a double bedroom. They had another reception, a modern kitchen and downstairs bathroom.

Last year he rented with 2 lads who were doing their Masters, he was working. They paid £333 a month for a 4 bed detached with 2 bathrooms, that had just been renovated.

boys3 · 10/09/2019 20:21

@thefairycaravan did they use the HomeRun service. The prices paid by your DS look pretty reasonable. Presumably the £333 was each?

TheFairyCaravan · 10/09/2019 20:35

When they got their first house they used the HomeRun service. Last year he used Rightmove. The house was £1000 a month, so £333 each, he had to pay council tax because he'd graduated but of course the others didn't.

Itscoldouthere · 11/09/2019 01:11

I didn’t know there was an accommodation booklet, but DS has been on holiday in Berlin, I picked him up from the airport tonight, feel very behind with everything 😳

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 11/09/2019 06:51

£333 per month each sounds cheaper than the university accommodation. How much deposit up front do they have to put down?

TheFairyCaravan · 11/09/2019 10:10

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 it was a £500 pp deposit. Then bills on top of course.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 11/09/2019 11:50

Hmm, I guess with bills it would probably equate to what the first years will be paying (roughly).

When we were students we were very mean with heating and of course it was way before the days of wi-fi, so can't remember our bills being very expensive at all. I recall that we could only get incoming calls on the phone; another way of keeping student expenditure down!
