Thought it may be nice to have a 2020 support thread, everyone welcome! (maybe Oxbridge posts could be kept to the Oxbridge thread).

No need to stress too much about which is "first choice" at this point, since they just end up in alphabetical order on the form and the unis themselves will be none the wiser.

I suspect things will seem a lot clearer when offers are actually in and they've been back for offer holder days etc. There's plenty of time yet.

PBLR · 05/10/2019 18:52

Still not submitted our form but Aston off our list after today - Not for DS ( or us for that matter) but he's asked to look at SHam tomorrow for second view with DH not with me so perhaps he's starting to get it now re what he wants/doesn't like, so that's progress for me anyway

MillicentMartha · 05/10/2019 22:15

What was wrong with Aston, PLBR?

PBLR · 06/10/2019 07:37

Well I know you shouldn't be too affected by the advertising (but that is an Open Day) but it wasn't great organisationally. The email with the itinery stuff arrived on Friday mid afternoon. 'Our friendly team will be at the station to give you advice in walking over to us' - really , well they weren't when we arrived but Google Maps did it for us. Sports facilities were rather dated ( pool was from 1925 and still awaiting an update). The talk was good but not given by someone from the department - an alumni who 'graduated in 1980 ( before me and DH even) with slides from 2015 - it's a brand new course for 2020 as our subject has been shrunk and only recently got going again. The dept representative was lovely but very new so it might get back up to speed soon. The SU was nice but tiny ( not expecting many people to use it then). The info said guided tour of the workshops etc but we weren't offered one. Very city centre based and gated accommodation which raised questions re security/ safety.
Guide girl was lovely but given what's out there in other uni's generally for our course and the cost generally I think we can get something with a more undergraduate feel that might suit DS better. We will.look at Bradford, Birmingham uni and Northumbria as a backup later this month.

Sorry, but this almost sounds as if you were looking at the place without him? Assuming that he was there as well, what did your DS think of it?

PBLR · 06/10/2019 09:01

Sorry, didn't mean it to sound like he isn't the person deciding. We left it to him to decide - those were just our comments later.
He wasn't keen as he really likes the practical elements and we didn't really see much of that. He would have liked to meet students studying in the subject area altho' not on his course at the moment.
I don't think he felt it was right for him but we will take him to look at some more b4 decision time

HuaShan · 06/10/2019 10:47

nodtik my ds has also recieved 'holding' emails basically saying they want to give equal preference to all applications so not to expect any offers before 15 January.

nodtik · 06/10/2019 20:12

@HuaShan thanks for the reply!

Son has now had holding emails from;

Birmingham
Exeter
Durham
Edinburgh

Nothing from Bangor yet?

Birmingham said that would endeavour to get back within 15 days, though what that means, we're not sure! Xx

goodbyestranger · 06/10/2019 20:18

The wording from Birmingham seems fairly loose - it doesn't really imply a decision.

aibutohavethisusername · 06/10/2019 21:49

DD’s UCAS form has now been received with all references etc.

Well done again though!

nodtik · 07/10/2019 13:45

Thanks

@HugoSpritz thanks that's really interesting!

You've noticed that my son is Sports & Exercise Science I see.

Has AStar in EPQ and predicted

A Star A A at A level xx

goodbyestranger · 07/10/2019 20:01

Interesting Hugo. For your DS's info one of my DS's got an early AAA offer from Bristol too and it was clearly implied that an early relatively low offer was negotiable in the event of a missed grade. So he put it as his insurance and hoped for the best, if the worst happened.

wineoclockthanks · 08/10/2019 20:17

DS has had an email from Leeds saying he will get an offer in the next couple of days. He only put in his application on Sunday so he's very happy.

aibutohavethisusername · 08/10/2019 21:09

DD has had holding emails from:

Bristol offer received this evening - A A A - and acknowledgement from Manchester (at last).

Pleased to have one offer under the belt. DS1 has been grumpy this week and it's good to know we can spend sometime apart next year. I'm only half joking....

snozzlemaid · 08/10/2019 23:02

Those of you whose dcs are getting offers, are they medicine applications?
My dd is nowhere near ready to send in her application.

MillicentMartha · 08/10/2019 23:08

Good news, sandy!
