Applying for Uni 2020

Thought it may be nice to have a 2020 support thread, everyone welcome! (maybe Oxbridge posts could be kept to the Oxbridge thread).

Very long running. It started at the end of year 10 start of year 11, saw everyone through GCSEs and welcomes all, regardless of whether they are on a vocational course, apprenticeship route or doing UCAS.

@Hoghgyni @KingscoteStaff - Thank you, was just looking to start a specific thread for Uni applications. The other thread seems to be a broad Yr12 thread. DC will actually be applying for University in the next few months and going into Yr13 so it would be nice having a specific thread.

Where is your DC thinking to apply, daydream, to study what, which A-levels?

Ahem, have you looked at funding, yet? It's expensive to send them to Uni nowadays.

@lljkk DD looking at Bath, Bristol and possibly UCL to do Physiology.

She is studying, Biology, Chemistry, and Maths at A level, how about your DC @lljkk?

Briefly looked at funding but that's about it.

DS2 will be - Quantity Surveying at Reading or Loughborough as top choices.

DD is doing same A-levels. Might do a gap year, not sure.
Could cost us up to £8k to support her if she goes to Uni in London. Egads.
She's chuffed tonight, though. DH has a tech job & his laptop is aging so he bought a new one so she can have his old one (small Macbook).

@eve Hi, I've heard good things about Loughborough. What A-levels is your DS2 doing?

Wow - @lljkk London Uni's are so expensive in terms of living costs. What degree is she looking to study?

It's good to see a thread for 2020 applications...

I have a DD looking to do Biochemistry... so far we have Warwick and York definitely on the list, I think Edinburgh will be added too, she may well leave 2 blank spaces and add these options later.

How's everyone getting on with personal statements?

@daydreamornot Loughborough is good - DS1 is also there doing engineering , hes just finished his 2nd year. As its not Russell Group it tends not to get mentioned by Mumsnet, but it has excellent facilities and teaching and provides great student support. DS1 is enjoying it there, only compliant is the town itself is not great.

Its also on the list for DS2 - hes doing A levels in Product Design, Environmental Science and Economics. His plan is a degree in Quantity surveying then a masters in Environmental surveying.

Glad to see a new thread. I feel the other one is not very busy and a little bit cliquey, even if it doesn't mean to be

My Dd is looking to study Psychology next year and likes the look of Warwick, Loughborough and Royal Holloway.

I think she's made a few notes for her personal statement but it's very tricky knowing what to put in it, isn't it?

Have your DC done any volunteering/work experience around their subjects?

@FurnitureAndBackgammon. My DD has done bits and bobs in terms of volunteering/work experience. She's about to do a couple of days of work experience in the labs of an innovation centre (more luck than planning she babysits for one of their scientists). She's done the lab days at Warwick Uni and I think that Warwick will certainly be her first choice. She'll probably get more W.E. at the same place (hopefully) over the next 9 months too, they run a proper W.E. program because of its part of P & G.

Good to hear that most DC seem to be at the same stage with PS's I think DD has a loose plan but nothing else.

@sincethereis @lljkk- which med schools are your DC looking at?

In terms of applications, DS has been to 2 open days at Birmingham and Warwick and liked both. Really interested in Southampton course but hasn't visited. School sent out email saying he should register for UCAS. Hasn't happened yet!
He has enough podcast/online lecture/reading material be be able to have a stab at notes for the PS, once he gets round to it.

Something must have triggered DC into action. My DC has asked if I've put their GCSE certificates somewhere as they don't know where they are. I think this is the lesser of two evils, as we've also been to IKEA today and they need to build the mirror they bought.

Thank you for starting the thread OP I missed the boat for the other thread with DC our ones age and didn't feel like I could step in. The thread I was on for DS1 going to uni was really helpful so I'm glad to be here. DS1 was a very low key, not expected to get amazing results only applied to three unis and was very chilled, so a nice first run but this time it's looking to be a bit more hard core and I'm not prepared!

DS2 is doing Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry and is looking to read Maths at university. I'm trying to persuade him to do Maths and something else like economics but he is quite set on what he wants to do. We've been to an open day in Bath where we got to stay in halls the night before which was brilliant as it opened his eyes to what uni is actually like. That's his first choice but it's vvv hard to get in. Looking at Exeter in a few weeks, then Swansea, then I have to put my big girl pants on and take him to look at a couple in London because he really fancies the big city. I don't!

We're in Wales so have A/S results next week which should be really helpful in pointing us toward the best place for him. At the moment he's looking to do the Cambridge Uni maths entrance exams because they really want them for Bath so if Chemistry comes back not brilliant then might drop that and really focus on the extra maths lessons. I don't know how you cope without getting a half way heads up!

Using that PS writing service would result in your application being thrown out before you even started. You do realise that admissions teams can spot that sort of tosh immediately? It would help if they used appropriate English grammar on their website. Plagiarism software is also used routinely on essays and coursework, so you should never use "services" such as these.
