University application for starting Sept 2019. About to accept the offers. Keep nagging DS and DH to get this done.

Now need a timeline for applying for loans including maintenance loan. I have left all this for DH to sort with DS for various reasons but DH seems to be unaware of deadlines.

When I mentioned about the need to apply for finance early to get it for September I was rewarded with a blank look.

Please help , need some simple guidelines and links as it would appear I now need to step in.

Tbh we stepped back. Make it clear to your DS that it is THEIR baby, you as parents will sign forms, provide info on request, will offer guidance and thoughts as and when requested. This is really hard I know. You'll frazzle yourself unnecessarily if you keep on trying to manage and drive the process yourself.

Just look on the student finance website it's very straightforward.
To be honest I just did it all for them. Saved nagging and fretting about whether it was done. They were far too stressed about A level revision and I had the time and patience to do it. I felt it was something useful I could do to help and they appreciated it.

I did / do SFE for all my DC too. It's the parent section which is the most time consuming anyhow - the student bit is tiny by comparison assuming no complicated trust fund income etc. I also very deliberately put my forms in three or fours days ahead of the final deadline because the turnover is significantly quicker than it is for the earlier birds.

beebreath · 27/04/2019 15:39

@goodbyestranger what is the final deadline ?

OP posts:
Stillabitemo · 27/04/2019 16:28

Final deadline is 24th May to have completed an application and receive finance for course start in September. That’s student application and parental bits need to be done by 24th. Applications later than this will still be processed but not guaranteed for September. We have been advised by our student finance England link person that due to finance opening late students applying after the deadline will almost certainly not get it for course start and could be looking at delays of up to 3 weeks.

Offers need to be accepted by Tuesday or they'll all be declined. Finance 24 may, uni accommodation check websites.

Thank you. @titchy @Stillabitemo

Just what I needed. 👍

Is there an easy way to find out the thresholds for maintenance loans? I only can find a calculator and I need to know the thresholds for each level of uspport given an iminent change in my household circumstances...

titchy · 28/04/2019 14:31

The above is for the current year but will give an indication of thresholds for next year.

Thanks titchy.

Piggywaspushed · 28/04/2019 14:56

Oh. Link doesn't work! Grin. I think I found one on another website. Trouble is, everywhere seems to say something different!

Weirdly if I clicked my link, then copied and paste and go it works, but not just clicking ....?!
