Manchester uni accommodation/moving in dates

Hi all

Has anyone taken a dc to Manchester uni halls in the last couple of years and remember what date they could move in? I've got the term dates, which says term starts on Mon 16th Sept this year, and was hoping to confirm that they'll probably move in on 14/15th? I'd like to book some time off work either before or after the drop off and will need to get it booked fairly soon.

Ds’ firm & insurance are the following weekend. So you might want to see if you can confirm from the uni website. I think international students frequently arrive the week before everyone else for orientation

Yes, it'll be open the weekend before for moving in fun/chaos! Have they chosen which halls to go for yet?

I've looked around Decor but can't find anything. I thought for dd2 that I had found her hall rental dates, but that was 3 years ago so I'm a bit vague!

Petitprince he's submitted his five choices. But from what I can make out, he won't know until results day or thereabouts?

DD was given a choice of dates but you need to be on the ball as the weekend slots go quickly. We ended up moving her in on the Thursday before.

At Manchester? Oh, had not considered that option at all! So maybe if I book the Thursday and Friday off then we have all options covered. Thinking of hiring a van and doing Manchester and Newcastle in one go to save driving up and down the country on subsequent/two weeks apart weekends, so trying to get my head round the logistics.

Does term include freshers activities? Worth contacting uni to ask. The calendar should be on line. Can be a week before term, ie lectures start.

I'm at Manchester uni albeit started a few years ago now. We were able to arrive from the Thursday before term started but I arrived on the Sunday morning; as did all others down my corridor. We didn't need slots at all but this may have changed/ depends on the campus. Fallowfield campus it was all fine.

It was one of the best years of my life - he will love it!

He'll have a ball (although not the freshers' ball, which is usually rubbish!). These days lots of students want ensuite self-catered halls but I'd always consider the old catered shared corridor ones as you meet more people and going to breakfast and dinner is another opportunity to meet people - they tend to be a bit more sociable, even if the food is a bit basic.

DD at Manchester also didn’t need to book a slot. I don’t recall that anyway. Her whole flat moved in on the Saturday apart from one poor soul who had moved in on the Thursday morning and had been alone for two days!

tell him to take care of his phone during freshers. My son had his phone and flat keys pinched from his pocket at one of the do's. I think its fairly common

I would agree - DD found they invite each other to meet for breakfast and dinner so it’s really sociable and you also meet new people in the dinning halls. So if you don’t happen like people on your floor there other people you can easily chat to.

Would recommend the Saturday morning - very quiet - parked outside my DDs room. Gave her chance to settle in - very busy on the Sunday

Manchester is the one with all lectures online in the September term due to covid 19 as far as I am aware - so not sure anyone will be paying anything for rent for September nor will they necessarily leave thei rhome. mancunion.com/2020/05/11/university-of-manchester-confirms-september-start-date/
